| | Imaje: supply evolves In a press conference organised during the recent Impatec in Vicenza, Imaje illustrated the advantages of its new S8 ink jet markers, on sale since March on the Italian market, and formalised the agreement for distribution of Rofin-Sinar lasers on a global scale. Thus inaugurating a new season of growth. Already launched on the French and Spanish markets during Emballage and Hispack, the new S8 ink jet markers from Imaje for small-character marking were officially presented in Italy in a press conference organised during the recent Impatec in Vicenza. The managing director of Imaje Italia, Boris Lombard, pointed out the characteristics and benefits of this new marker and also took the opportunity to make public the contents of the agreement entered into with Rofin-Sinar for the sale and marketing of its matrix lasers worldwide. With a mention also of the companys intention to take a further step or two down a road leading this French company to establishing itself as an all-round supplier of marking solutions. Four basic models The markers in the S8 series, replacing the previous S4 series, have been designed to operate in difficult industrial environments, characterised by dust and humidity. For this reason given the nickname marking workhorse, these markers work at speeds of 5.4 m/s with one or two heads, which can be single-jet, two-jet or four-jet (with 2, 4, 8 or 16 lines). There are four standard variations to meet specific needs: Classic is the basic model, prints on two lines and offers reliability and quality with the best price/performance ratio, for all simple marking needs (e.g., on tubes, where Imaje is particularly strong in Italy). Master is versatile, reliable and simple to use. More complete than the Classic, both in terms of configuration and software performance, it prints up to 16 lines and is the most adapt at resolving variable marking problems, in all industrial environments. IP65 is waterproof and dust-tight, can mark in extreme conditions and offers guarantees of reliability, quality and safety in any working environment. Equipped with a carriage that makes it easier to move around, it is fitted with a pressurised head and is further protected by a metal cover for extra insulation, thus complying with IP65 standards (certification issued by Laboratorio Kema). Contrast is designed to work with pigmented inks, in all colors, and sets new standards when it comes to marking of dark surfaces. The main innovations The main changes characterising the new series, made to ensure greater ease of use and lower running costs, are found mostly in the interface, which now has a more user-friendly keyboard, adopting immediately recognisable pictograms to access the most frequently used functions and that, now, lets one draw logos without having to use special software. Efforts have also been made to cut consumption levels: the S8 markers have a condensation system that reduces the amount of additives needed by a quarter and to recycle the solvent vapours (with obvious advantages for the environment). The other great objective to increase the functionality of the machines has been achieved by working on several aspects. For instance, by developing an automatic head-cleaning system, which first vaporises the solvent on the nozzle to dissolve any build-up of ink and then washes and dries this with a jet of air, guaranteeing trouble-free start-up of the marker at the beginning of each day (and so cutting the need for maintenance into the bargain). The new machines also have more dependable electronics (e.g., by adopting a single central card instead of the three cards used previously) and an optimised ink circuit that allows for constant reading of the temperature in order to calibrate the viscosity more precisely, thus improving the quality and constancy of the print. Finally, serial communication is made easier thanks to dialog with the PLC or host, as well as making interface with production control systems that much more effective. The laser joins the range Imajes opening up to laser technology is, without a doubt, an important milestone, letting it complete the service it offers its customers by extending its range of marking solutions, as well as giving it the chance to enter new markets (the mineral water sector is a prime example). During the press conference, attention was drawn to the quality of the technology and construction: Rofin-Sinar produces CO2 matrix lasers in the UK that can be programmed and feature great flexibility. «These are extremely reliable machines, that require very little maintenance, - stresses Lombard - thus meeting the basic need of laser users: to avoid operating problems». «The agreement entered into with Rofin-Sinar Technologies pointed out the manager is an agreement between joint, independent companies and concerns both the distribution of the machines (now also available in Italy with the Imaje trademark) and the joint development of research projects for technology and products. Indeed, this agreement formalises the meeting of two perfectly complementary concerns, each with its own advanced technology and capillary presence in more than 100 countries around the globe (Ed.: the Imaje network amounts to no fewer than 30 branches and 56 distributors)». However, this would appear to be just the first step in a far wider-reaching strategy of growth, one that aims at redrawing the field of action of the multinational (founded in France in 1982 and today part of the Dover Technologies Group, USA), turning it from a producer of ink jet and contact markers into a provider of solutions for marking. «And this, obviously, means that it also integrates other technologies», points out Lombard. Just how will soon be seen.
