C

Sticking to reality

Adhesives for flexible packaging: S.A.P.I.C.I. increases production and becomes more specialised, proposing itself as a partner in the field of research and innovation. Skills, discretion and substantiality when coming up with the best solutions make it one of the most dynamic leading players in this difficult market.

Cernusco sul Naviglio (MI). A 22 meter high tower, with four production floors, a maze of tubes and pipes which neatly branch out to reach a battery of steel tanks and some secondary buildings which include the storage warehouses: everywhere is scrupulously and unusually tidy and clean. Above all, hanging in the most out of the way places there are numerous warning signs inviting the visitor to think twice before doing the most normal things, such as turning on a mobile phone.
Prevention is better than admonition and how could it be otherwise in the S.A.P.I.C.I. chemical plant where round the clock, in three working shifts, over 18,000 tonnes of isocyanate polymers, leads, polyurethane resins for paints and polyurethane adhesives are produced.
Massimo Rossi, the site manager, is frank and cordial and using the easy tones of the boss speaks to me – picking some scrap paper off the floor - of technology, research, flexibility and service.
Ah yes, because in packaging even a “stupid” thing like a very thin layer of adhesive of a few microns may make an optimum coupling of three films or a useless mass of plastic (or of paper or aluminium) to be thrown away.
Packaging is an art with its fantastic plots hatched to depict our comforting reality, and those who work in packaging have every right to be proud. Many are called in to compete with their knowledge and skills to design this product non product, which no housewife would admit to being interested in buying. But this is no obstacle and many continue to spare no efforts to do it even better (many, but not all!).

Questions of choice
An adhesive is an adhesive and when it doesn’t work, when it doesn’t stick, there are serious problems, because in this field there are few people who really have a deep understanding of it. The various mediums each have their own special behaviour and performance which always present margins sometimes leading to unpredictable results. This is why adhesives in the field of flexible packaging are, at least according to Rossi, a technology made of research and productive capacity which depends for everything on efficient customer service, be they converter or end-user.
S.A.P.I.C.I. appears to interpret this spirit faithfully. Perhaps because of its history which, until 1994 saw it produce semi-finished products which were then transformed by other companies into ready-to-use products. Perhaps due to the fact that S.A.P.I.C.I., after entering the adhesive market themselves, before becoming one of the top players in this niche dominated by multinationals, deliberately concentrated on helping the customer to find solutions to their problems (a company “problem-solver” we would say nowadays).
So we have the workshop – and what a workshop!- equipped with the most up-to-date tools of analysis in which a rare quantity of trials are carried out (see box) for the most well-known Italian converters, customers otherwise. And here, tidily arranged on the shelves, are the many reports of tests carried out -all rigorously authenticated with stamp and signature, by way of an honest undertaking of responsibility- and the many questions to which answers have been found.
«We believe in our ability to differentiate ourselves in the market, putting our skills and tools at the disposal of the market – Rossi says. And thanks to the tools we are equipped with and the two coupling machines in the workshop, a solventless Nordmeccanica and a solvent Moser, we can create and test the most efficient combinations, check package conformity, offer solutions, finding the best adhesive each time, be it ours or the competitor’s».

Growing in flexibility
History is written in hindsight and sometimes it is rather difficult to locate the details, know the dynamics, understand the reasons. But leaving aside these peculiarities, we can only confirm that S.A.P.I.C.I is growing and, from having a budding role in the world of adhesives, increasing in size, big enough now to start construction work on a new production site which will be located in San Cipriano Po (Pavia). A plant which will occupy an area of 60,000 square meters, or possibly even double that, 12,000 of which will be covered. A remarkable shift of perspective which is, Cristian Furiosi, head of environment and safety management, tells us, in view of the future growth of production demand.
«Initially we plan to install only a limited number of lines, but nonetheless we have decided to start immediately with service in view of developments in the near future. This way we will be ready to sustain market evolution, providing rapid answers. This means, just to give an example, that, when the plant is up and running, less than six months will be needed to plan and set up a new production line.
We have tried to design a good plant and, simultaneously, plan our future».
It is quite true that you must be able to look far ahead into the future. On the other hand, it must be admitted that in this idea which is destined to become reality soon, we can see the vocation of S.A.P.I.C.I (for your information recent company lexicon requires the stress on the “A”) to make flexibility an element of market differentiation.
«If this converter - Rossi tells us - suffers a stock collapse and is left with no adhesive, we are able to supply the desired product in 48 hours if it is available in the warehouse, or in a week if we have to start producing it. In short, we try to do everything we can in order to meet our interlocutors’ needs.
The best customers are satisfied customers».
Well, we can only wait and see if promises will effectively be kept from now on and if, notwithstanding the increase in production volumes, the human element will be remembered: or at least the person who, sitting on the other side of the table, asks for help with his problems.

Ricerca applicata e sperimentazione

La S.A.P.I.C.I. S.p.A.
- contenuto, quantità e qualità, di solventi residui nello stampato/accoppiato prodotto, tramite la tecnica dello spazio di testa (Gas-cromatografo Autosystem XL completo di autocampionatore e campionatore automatico per spazio di testa, Perkin Elmer);
- determinazione del quantitativo di ammine aromatiche, secondo la normativa BGA tedesca (spettrofotometro UV-VIS a doppio raggio, modello V-530 Jasco Corporation);
- analisi GPC – cromatografia di esclusione dimensionale – per la determinazione dei pesi molecolari dei campioni e quindi per il controllo qualità, sia in fase di lavorazione sia sul prodotto finito, delle proprietà fisiche del polimero scelto;

Applied research and experimentation

S.A.P.I.C.I. S.p.A - Società Azionaria Per l’Industria Chimica Italiana - has been operating since 1936 in the field of secondary applied chemistry (isocyanates, TDI-TMP adducts, PU lacquers) but only in 1995 did it start up the production of mono and bicomponent polyurethane lacquers with or without solvents (Polurene FP) for the flexible packaging sector. This is an all-Italian concern, made up of 70 persons, of which 35 involved in production, that in the year 2000 registered a turnover of over 110 billion lire. The S.A.P.I.C.I. formula for success has been that of considering research, quality, flexibility and service as starting points and not goals. For this reason the company is capable of responding to requests from the market rapidly. Proof of this philosophy lies in the company’s laboratory of instrumental analysis capable of carrying out the following analyses:
- content, quantity and quality of residual solvent in the print/laminating of the product, by way of the head space technique (Gas chromatography Autosystem XL complete with automatic autosampling and sampling for head space, Perkin Elmer);
- determination of quantities of aromatic amine, according to German BGA standards (double range UV-VIS spectrophotometer, model V-530 Jasco Corporation);
- GPC analyses - dimensional exclusion chromatography - for rating the molecular weight of samples and hence for quality control, both in the process and in the finished product state, of the physical properties of the polymer chosen;
- DSC analyses - scanner differential calorimetry - capable of giving basic measures for characterising a polymeric material (DSC 7 with Tac 7/DX interface and Pyris software - Perkin Elmer)
- electronic microscope for the acquisition of spectres both in transmittance and in reflection on portions of extremely small surfaces (FT-IR Mircoscope fitted with Autoimage software and ATR and microtome accessories).
