| | Plastic: a year 2000 drawn by recycling Plastic Consult has compiled its latest Trend Synthesis, which offers a review of the most important aspects of the Italian Plastics Market for the year 2000. Figures reveal an increasing importance of regenerated material and an average growth of 4% for the packaging outlets. In the year 2000, in respect to the general potential of the good development of the GNP, the run of virgin polymers was rather disappointing, showing an increase of only 3.7%. The overall growth in the consumption of plastics is a lot higher and close to +6%, thanks to the use of regenerated material. In fact the scarcity and the high price levels of virgin polymers have given recycling an important boost. Here is the latest data available and the relative comments drawn from the latest Plastic Trend Synthesis 2000 report issued by the Milan Plastics Consult. The run of the market The Italian economy experienced a definite improvement in 2000. The growth in the GNP was close to 3%, twice the 1999 level, and industrial production has put in an even sprightlier performance after the stagnation that occurred in 1999. Inflation was largely above the targeted level and family expenditure put in a good recovery, being back at 1998 levels. The best news though came once again from the increase in investments, up by over 7%. Here investments in manufacturing plants and equipment made a decisive contribution. Plastics consumption however showed only a moderate growth (+3.7%), well below the levels achieved in the previous years. It should be noted that here reference is made only to virgin polymers. Large volumes of reclaimed materials were used in 2000 due to the prevailing high prices of the price of virgin materials. Plastics production put in only a marginal increase over the 1999 level, with all plants running close to capacity. Exports remained steady, additional demand being met by a further increase in imports. Commodity plastics The five main thermoplastics (namely LDPE/LLDPE, HDPE, polypropylene, PVC, and polystyrene) account for about 77% of total plastics consumption and almost 85% of demand in thermoplastics. Polyethylenes LDPE/LLDPE demand grew by 2.6%, with LLDPE once again putting in the best performance. The fastest growing applications for low density polyethylene were stretch film, thanks to continuing investment in large extrusion lines, and film for automatic packaging, due to the increasing use of laminates in food packaging and booming exports by Italian converters. A fairly good development was also achieved by shrink film, while industrial sacks and agricultural film continued the downward trend shown in past years. HDPE demand grew at a rate of 5.5% in 2000, a rather satisfactory rate although below the performance achieved in previous years. The growth was led by film (mainly carrier bags) and piping (mostly corrugated tubes for electrical uses). Polypropylene Growth in demand for PP in the year 2000 was rather deceptive and below expectations. Suffice to say that for the first time in many years demand for fibres experienced a higher growth than plastics. BOPP film among extruded materials and electrical appliances among injection moulding applications showed the best performance. PVC Once again demand for PVC showed an erratic trend over the year. Overall, a small increase (+1.1%) on the 1999 level of consumption was achieved, with elasticised applications (cable insulation, gardening hoses and pastes) doing better than stiff ones for once. Polystyrene Demand slowed down considerably in 2000. Disposables and extruded sheet for food packaging (mostly BOPS) put in a sizeable growth, while most other applications stagnated or even showed a downward trend. The year closed with a small aggregate growth (+2.4%) for polystyrenes. EPS outperformed solid PS, putting in a satisfactory +3.3%, mostly due to the sprightly development of packaging of white electrical appliances. Major outlets Packaging is by far the most important outlet for plastic materials. Even if market development in 2000 was definitely lower than in previous years, packaging did well, growing at an average of +4%, with flexibles at +4.7% and rigid containers at +3.5%. Demand for cushioning materials remained practically stagnant. Market development of flexible materials is mostly attributable to automatic packaging (+7.5%). Stretch and shrink film development is basically in line with overall growth. Shopping bags continued their positive trend while other flexible applications stagnated. In rigid packaging, a deceptive development was recorded in bottle production, due to the continuous lightening in weight and to a shortage of PET. Stiff thermoformable sheets showed a just above average growth. All other applications put in a rather limited growth. The demand for plastic has also grown in building and construction (+2.6%, over 4% when accounting for the use of reclaimed materials), in furniture, which is the third outlet in order of importance that put in an increase of slightly over 4%, in the automobile sector, in production of electrical household appliances (+5%). On the contrary the negative year for agriculture has generated a marked decrease in demand for plastics, and footwear, after the bad start in 2000, put in a good recovery in the second half of the year. Most of the other outlets (namely clothing, leatherware, stationery goods) appear pretty well levelled off, closely following the end user trend which in turn moves with the general economy. The plastics processing industry Total production of plastics goods recorded a healthy growth in 2000, following the recovery of the overall economy and the favourable evolution of industrial production, developing at almost +3% over the previous year. Once again a significant contribution also came from the export activity of the Italian converters, resulting in a sizeable increase of the net trade balance (close to +8% in volume). Concerning production in terms of technology, extrusion, accounting for almost one half of total output of plastic manufactured goods, is still the area showing most growth. The film sector recorded a growth of over +6% on the 1999 level, with bioriented PP film and LLDPE stretch film slightly below the average for once. Fairly satisfactory growth rates (close to the average) occurred in the thermoformable sheet sector, where the building and construction industry recorded a favourable trend and figures for corrugated pipes for cable ducts were also up. Injection moulding showed a growth well above the average, while blow moulding underwent a definite slowdown due to the poor performance of the major end market (mineral water and CSD (carbonated soft drinks) bottling.
