| | Everything, more but well Everyone who enters the Krones world is overwhelmed by the innovations which are the result of fifty years of experience. Over the years, the company has constantly augmented its range, thanks to many acquisitions but, and this is most important, it shows no signs of stopping here. The area occupied by Krones at the last Drinktec-Interbrau exhibition could not go unnoticed: a 6,000 sq. ms stand, sub-divided into geographical areas to simplify its dealings with customers and visitors. The stand displayed machines for packaging and bottling (from beer to soft drinks, from fruit juices to mineral water), as well as equipment for labeling, inspection and control, automation, washing, palletisation and software. Moreover, to celebrate its 50th birthday and entertain its guests, a space was set out where people could take a break, possibly with a mug of beer, German of course! Technology to serve the market The results illustrated by 2001s turnover, which show growth in the two areas, confirm that Krones is on the right road. This is borne out by the large amount of equipment and systems exhibited at fairs, in some cases only improved products, in others brand new designs. All of them, however, bearing the stamp of flexibility and modularity. It should be noted that packaging, generally speaking, is becoming more and more elaborate and that equipment manufacturers are being called upon to meet special and continually changing needs: the space devoted to information on the batch is becoming ever smaller, while bottling lines have to cope with more and more frequent changes of shape, the visual impact of the packaging is a fundamental element in a products success (it is no coincidence that the self-adhesive label and the no-label look are enjoying such success)... Alongside machines for bottling, labeling and end-of-line, Krones new products are also aimed at inspection techniques (which nowadays use high resolution television cameras with a precision, both for the product and its container, never achieved before) and the procedure for washing crates and bottles (where the guidance of the washing-bath has been modified and the efficiency of label removal increased, anticipating automatic washing of the heads). But let us look in more detail at the main innovations offered by the German company in the various areas it is concerned with. Filling In response to the need for speed and accuracy of filling, as well as flexibility both in change of format and filling technique (hot or cold), Krones has produced the Mecafill VKP-V short-tube filling machine, which works on an electro-pneumatic principle to control the pressure in each individual chamber. This allows rapid modification of the various process stages and, for example in the case of glass bottles, it is possible to achieve a low level of oxygen in two distinct stages before the actual filling stage. Krones has also developed an innovative line concept for the filling of PET bottles. These are produced by the Contiform stretch blow-moulding machine, immediately filled with the new VG equipment for still mineral water and fruit juices, and then capped. The Canmatic labeling machine can also be added to this bloc. This results in an extremely compact configuration, which avoids the need for transportation by air and blowers, but above all it eliminates any possible contamination of the bottles between the blow-drying and filling stages, which is normally very protracted. In addition, this system avoids the need for a rinsing machine, with clear consequences in costs, both for the line itself and of staff required for supervision, since the set-up can be controlled by a single operator. Furthermore, to satisfy the special needs of the soft drinks industry, Contiform H has been designed, for the aseptic hot filling of sensitive drinks in PET containers. Because the bottles have to withstand a temperature of 85-95 °C it is necessary to introduce special thermal stabilisation: the mould is taken to a temperature of 160 °C, then the bottles are cooled thanks to a high pressure jet of air and then, only when they have reached the optimum temperature, they are removed from the mould. The new Sensometic VP-L filing machine has been designed for filling with non-carbonated fruit juices, with or without fruit pulp, using both hot and cold techniques. But through this pneumatically controlled filling system it is also possible to deal with carbonated drinks. The quantity of drink can by changed at will, even during the process, thanks to a sensor incorporated in the filling tube. Finally, the VO-DM-PET has been designed for bottling soft drinks, both still and carbonated, in no-return PET bottles, using an inductive flowmeter system. Speed can reach 60,000 bottles per hour. Labeling Solomodul is a revolutionary labeling concept which allows different techniques to be combined, for example cold gluing, hot melt, self-adhesive and wrap-around labeling from a reel. In the Solomodul modular system, the self-adhesive and gluing stations are easily interchangeable. But the operator can also choose to use them in parallel: the shoulders and body of a particular product, for example, can be decorated with a no label look label, while a classic glued label can be applied to the neck of the bottle. With this solution, it is possible to use a machine which can satisfy specific needs with maximum flexibility. The combination of glued and self-adhesive labeling in a single machine can be used in both the lower and medium levels of the wine and mineral water industries, and the high speed versions (up to 60,000 containers per hour) in the beer industry. Another new development concerns the Contiroll labeling machine, which in future will be able to do without the hotmelt station, thanks to the use of pre-glued labels created by Irplast. This invention translates into a series of advantages for the user both in terms of costs and simplification of the process, since due to the elimination of glue it is no longer necessary to carry out the traditional cleaning operations. Of course, the German company can supply systems for applying sleeve labels onto plastic or glass containers. The completely automatic Sleevematic AF and DS rotary models use extendible tubular film which is perfectly adapted to any shape of container. Both machines can be used either at the upstream or downstream stage of the filling machine and achieve hourly rates of between 3,000 and 42,000 containers. End of line In response to higher and higher packaging speeds Kettner, one of Krones AGs companies, has for the first time designed a bloc for palletisation. The Pressant PalBloc is made up of an in-line grouping station, a palletisation module and an integrated system for the transportation of pallets. The output is 500 layers per hour, with the possibility of working many configurations, including the packaging of bottles wrapped in heatshrink film, pads or trays with heatshrink film, trays without film and cardboard boxes. Also aimed at high efficiency, Kettner produces the Linapac II packer/unpacker, based on the principle of a single column and already successfully applied to robot systems. This is a machine which offers a significant reduction in size and can reach 500 cycles per hour. It can also carry out combined packing and unpacking operations, as well as sorting operations. The Linapac II PA version is equipped with a crate inverter and ejector bolts and the two-way version allows the completely automatic unpacking of PET bottles. Finally, mention should be made of the Variopac 70 packaging machine which, thanks to its modular construction, can integrate components for packaging with trays, pads and/or film, thus responding rapidly to the differing requirements of the market. Production reaches 70 cycles/min. Looking ahead Much has been written and said about the last 50 years. But what does the future hold? With the increase in population, there will be a parallel growth in the worldwide consumption of drinks, which at present is about 1.22 trillion litres (a per capita consumption of 208 litres per annum). In fact, at a global level annual growth of 3% is forecast, taking into account the fact that unlike the European and American markets which are for the most part mature, in Asia drinks consumption is rising at a rate of about 10%. And because, as well known, it is through packaging that it will be possible to enjoy mineral water, drinks and other products, as a consequence the importance of packaging will also increase, as it takes on a role which is more than that of merely protecting the product. It will be interesting to see how the drinks industry evolves in the future. For its own part, Krones will do its best to keep a step ahead with regard to future innovations. | | In the beginning there was a workshop Kroness first fifty years is marked by continuity: their name has in fact stayed the same for all these years, the same going for the ownership, something that has hence managed to transmit the image of a company that is solid and reliable. There could be no better occasion than Drinktec-Interbrau for bringing out a special edition of the Krones Magazine, full of wonderful illustrations, in which to speak of future projects and tomorrows markets. But alongside the new product features it would be worthwhile saying a few words to describe how Krones began. As Volker Kronseder, Chairman of the Executive Board explains, My father founded the company on 1 October 1951. At that time the premises covered an area of 100 sq. ms., and the planning office, in which the first semi-automatic labeling machine was designed, was the kitchen table of his two-roomed apartment. Since then the company had made giant strides. Suffice to say that today one bottle in five at an international level and one in two in Germany is filled, labeled and packed by a Krones machine. From these modest beginnings there has developed a group which operates on an international level in the manufacture of machines for bottling and packing, employing 8,000 people and having a turnover of 1.1 billion Euro. If I look around, says Hermann Kronseder, the founder of the company, and see the outcome of a lifes work, that is the Krones company, I can only feel pride. My motto has always been: Impossible? The word does not exist. Thanks to great determination and deep commitment from me and my staff, as well as an instinct for making the right decision, a company was created which was to become Krones AG. In 1995, having reached 70 years of age, I decided to hand the legacy on to my son: by then the company had achieved a turnover of 1.6 billion DM and employed 7,800. It was the most difficult decision I had ever taken: I was placing the fruits of my lifes work into the hands of someone else. My initial scepticism over, I now know that it was the right decision. In fact, in 2001 Krones recorded the best results in its history, in terms of both turnover and profits: a great present to celebrate its 50th anniversary! In the first six months of 2001, turnover rose by 15.4% compared with 2000, reaching 578.4 million Euro (74% of which came from abroad) and the trading profit, after taxes, grew by 33%, reaching 25.1 million Euro. To continue to ride the crest of the wave and maintain its leading position, it is important to concentrate on innovation. It is no accident that every year Krones invests 6% of its turnover in R&D. For example, in the first six months of the current year it invested 32 million Euro on increasing capacity and, especially, in a centre to service assistance and spare parts. | | | |
