| | Brands change, the story goes on The Swiss group SIG has purchased the activities of Sasibs Wet area, including operations and branches throughout the world. The new concern aims at better exploiting the synergies of the group, without though giving up on the timehonoured skills and knowhow of the single actors involved in the integration process, that is proceeding at a brisk pace. All to the advantage of the market. The news arrived last summer and it was immediately clear it was of the type to make a rumble in the world of beverages, opening new prospects inside the segment. In brief the story runs as follows: SIG Holding AG operates in the packaging sector on a world level, producing a broad variety of solutions for packing solids and liquids, in the foodstuff and in other sectors. The Swiss group purchased the activities of Sasibs Wet area (that included the knowhow and skills built up in the bottling and end-of-line sector), the Sasib operations in the US, Mexico, Brazil, China as well as the Sasib branches located in Europe, the Middle East, the Far East, giving rise to the new SIG Simonazzi division. Numerous business units have been incorporated into this division, among which SIG Simonazzi Beverage SpA that, in its very denomination, underlines the strength of the tradition of a timehonoured brand for the world of bottling, a concern that the world of beverage will continue to turn to as a total supplier of systems. Other timehonoured brands have been used as names of business units: SIG Alfa, SIG Comaco, SIG Manzini, SIG Elettric 80. That is to say, hence that the markets are on the move, the brands are changing, but the value of the legacy of a company remains, underlined in this case by the Divisions maintaining a very Italian management: Carlo Venturi (engineer, with important management experience in the international field) has been made Division head, while Luigi Panzetti has been nominated managing director of SIG Simonazzi Beverage SpA. Past, present and future A consolidated reality in the packaging sector, the SIG group operates at world level by way of the divisions SIG Combibloc (cardboard packs for beverages and filling machines), SIG Pack (packaging machines and systems) and SIG Plastics (machines for the production of plastic containers, among which the Corpoplast blowing machines). In buying up Sasib, SIG has attained a business volume of around three billion Swiss Francs: strong skills and knowhow and a precise specialisation in the liquid food packaging sector have hence been incorporated in a single large group. Without though forgetting that, exploiting the knowhow of SIG Plastics, the group is today capable of offering its customer a complete range of services and systems for the PET bottling industry, with spin-offs in high added value along the entire circuit, from container production to high speed bottling, from labeling to end-of-line and logistics. As Roman Boutellier, CEO SIG, went on to mention: «A buy-up is never simply a matter of increasing turnover and profits, but rather an action with the intent of augmenting the intrinsic value of the company, that aims at becoming a solid point of reference for the market. As well as that, in this case, the shedding of areas considered to be of low strategic value and the focusing at the same time on packaging activities goes hand in hand with the fundamental objective: the creation of an effective network of synergies, from which all the sectors of the group, and in extreme synthesis also our customers are liable to benefit from, starting off from a base of operative excellence». Interesting on this count, Boutelliers declaration of intent for the immediate future: «After having already united the commercial organisations in some countries, so as to develop the activity of cross-selling, we now wish to practise a transfer of specific knowhow thanks to the interchangeability of the management cadres of the single divisions». The process of integration of the SIG group is what is more proceeding in great strides and one only need have visited the great exhibition space reserved for SIG at Drinktec (the world bottling event that took place in Bavaria 20 27 September) to gain further proof of the respect shown for the technology offered by Simonazzi. Global solutions The commitment, and the honour of illustrating the many and important technological new features fielded by SIG Simonazzi to the international press brought together for the occasion, fell to Luigi Panzetti in person. «Over the last few years Simonazzi has been able to focus its own skills and knowhow in the field of PET and aseptic filling - the managing director started out by saying - and some solutions capable of marking the evolution of the segment all told have emerged form the intense research activity. This thanks to the measures and the technologies adopted and interpreted in an innovatory manner, so as to satisfy the growing demand for hygiene and the preservation of organoleptic qualities of non fizzy beverages, such as fruit juices, sports drinks, milk and milk based beverages, for bottling in plastic containers at room temperature». As far as aseptic filling is concerned, there are two main new features (see box on this count): the dry sterilising process, that can be obtained in a vacuum with the line filler Aseptical L, and Ecoshield EPT(Enhanced Pressure Treatment) where sterilisation is carried out at high pressure. But also in the field of filling flat beverages in PET, SIG Simonazzi can suggest something new to the market, thanks to the superbloc for blowing/filling and labeling, proposed along with a robotised palletization/depalletision isle. «In this field we turned special attention to phasing systems that integrate the blower with the filler: in case of emergency stoppages - Panzetti explains - one can empty the blower without throwing away the blown bottles, improving efficiency and quality». Other points of interest derive from the adoption of the load measures and by the long tubes on the Eurotronica FM LT (devised for filling beer in PET) and in the case of the Blockrinser, from the processing of bottles by way of sterile air flows and suction at the same time. Finally, for the world of soft drinks, SIG Simonazzi offers a winning duo: assembled on a signal base and with premix integration, the Starcanplus filler and the 12 headed Comaco AG seamer. A technological range of sure success, that actually bears witness to an ideal continuity in the policy of improving and excellence, a value common to the group. And even if changes always imply a good dose of uncertainty, as Panzetti pointed out «once again it is the customers who have the last word as to the suitability and effectiveness of the choices made. Right from the outset of this new run of things, we had the impression that the approach to the market started up with the market in former years has not been interrupted. Rather in a certain sense it has been revitalised, given that SIG Simonazzi, thanks to the solidity of the operations, is to all effect a partner for starting up a longterm cooperation. On the other hand, our sector is evermore crossed by great company mergers and strategic changes: the suppliers of machines are called upon to create systems and those that, as a tradition, have supplied systems now have to be able to aboveall offer global solutions». | | Aims and developments Two key new features offered by SIG Simonazzi research in the field of aseptic filling: a dry and high pressure sterilisation process. Dry sterilization with Aseptica L SIG Simonazzi has developed a new system of sterilization in a high-vacuum environment. It provides perfectly dry bottles and eliminates the need for further treatment, such as rinsing and draining. This new system has been applied to the Simonazzi Aseptica L linear filler in the following way. The bottles are fed into a sterilization chamber by a pushing device with pneumatic grips. While the bottles are being positioned for sterilization, a similar system of pneumatic grips removes the previously sterilized bottles from the chamber. The process of sterilization takes place in a vacuum by introducing a fine mist of hot hydrogen peroxide and the bottles are then dried by vaporizing the water residual. A module containing the vacuum pumps, instruments and electric panel, set alongside the linear filler, controls all stages of sterilization. In the volumetric-type filling process the quantity of product to be introduced into the bottle is controlled by flowmeters, and there is no contact between the bottle and the filling valve. The product is fed directly from a small-sized aseptic tank in overpressure with inert gases. After production, dummy bottles are inserted for automatic washing (CIP) and sterilization (SIP) operations. Sterilization can be carried out either with superheated water (130 °C) or steam. All the production-washing-sterilization stages are controlled by a PC, which also displays and memorizes all the working parameters. Sealing with aluminum caps - Starting from an alluminium reel, the caps are cut out and shaped with or without tabs. Thanks to a specially shaped channel with sterile air sprays, the caps reach the feeder/distributor, situated directly above the row of bottles. As the bottles pass by, they pick up the cap directly. The capped bottles then pass under the sealing head, which closes the cap on the bottle mouth. The sterilization-filling-sealing areas are enclosed in a tunnel in overpressure of filtered air in a class 100 enclosure. Most of the moving parts and instruments are situated outside the tunnel and thus the sterility of the environment is not broken for any intervention might be needed. The moving parts and instruments are, however, enclosed in external paneling for operator safety. Ecoshield EPT, the new frontier The EPT (an acronym for Enhanced Pressure Treatment) is the cutting-edge technology powering the high-pressure treatment developed by SIG Simonazzi. The EPT technology is currently under industrial application development. It consists of a modular structure with a minimum of 16 reactors, lined up in two parallel rows. Each individual reactor, the basic cell in the machine, is able to process completely independently one bottle at a time. The technical decision to work with small-size processors is due to the fact that the process developed involves using high pressure for short times, but exploiting extremely fast variations in pressure. According to SIG Simonazzi research, this is the way to achieve the industrial application of the high-pressure process. The modular structure provides extremely high flexibility from the point of view of line layout and, of crucial importance, can be installed as a simple upgrade on existing lines. In light of the results obtained in experiments, high pressure treatment clearly emerges as the most interesting and effective microbic stabilization system for food products. In the tests, pressurized pineapple juice was completely stabilized for commercial purposes at pressures no lower than 4,500 bars with the elimination of bacterial species responsible for fermentation. At this pressure, a holding time of around 30 seconds guarantees perfect stability. Moreover, it was very interesting to check how a relative increase in pressure to 5,200 bars, achieving the same stabilizing effect, allowed considerable reductions in holding times (up to 10 seconds). The most resistant species - but not involved in the decay process of the product - were completely eliminated at 6,000 bars. At this pressure, a shorter treatment time (around 20 seconds) was required to inactivate the micro-organisms. The quality level of the product treated is completely respected as regards nutritional and nutritive aspects, as confirmed by the analysis of the main chemical components: vitamins, organic acids, and sugars. The demonstration of the synergetic effect of pressure and temperature is extremely important for the purposes of reducing holding times and the process temperature to obtain the same sterilizing effect, especially for the more resistant species (sporigens and pathogens). All of this must also be considered in light of the obvious capacity of high pressure, which exploits rapid changes in temperature generated by adiabatic phenomena, to inhibit some chemical reactions responsible for thermal damage in the product. | | | |
