This autumn Comieco organised two seminars, dedicated to business to consumer (B2C) and the results of the paper and cardboard collection in the first six months of this year. Here follow the details. The latest from Comieco Online purchasing takes off Turnover of online sales in Italy has exceeded 3,100 billion lire and estimates for 2004 speak of a turnover of around 20,000 billion. Hence, despite the much talked about crisis of the New Economy, in Italy e-commerce, also business to consumer (B2C), is in full expansion. These are the figures that emerged during the seminar in Milan on the subject B2C, New Economy, old packaging? organised 20th September last by Comieco. The Italians are now buying all kinds of articles over the Internet: books, CDs, software and computer equipment, but also trips, financial products, tickets to shows and foodstuffs. The phenomenon of online purchasing - among other thing object of experiments made by the important distribution chains - is taking off, at least in some areas of the country. Decidedly towing this movement we find Lombardy: almost a third of all Italian e-commerce enterprises have their headquarters in this region, and in Milan in particular online purchasing is beginning to take on sizeable dimensions economically speaking. In 83% of the cases delivery of goods to the customer is within 24 hours from the order being placed. And the e-commerce and logistics enterprises almost always add transport packaging to the original packaging - that the consumer anyway demands as a guarantee of purchase. For the most part these are cardboard boxes and light cardboard packs (that account for 71% and 65% of the total). The growth of the purchases online, as has emerged from a study carried out by Agici, is based on a greater control of the purchasing process, as well as trust and convenience, but in the same context a demand for environmental compatibility both for transport and for the characteristics of the packaging is beginning to emerge. As Carlo Montalbetti, general head of Comieco observed both consumers using the network, and the sector companies are showing themselves more sensitive to the environmental impact of this new activity. Hence the idea of this seminar, that was attended by representatives of all the categories interested in finding ecosustainable solutions. This commitment will become constant, with the setting up of the permanent observatory, promoted by Comieco with the participation of all the main actors in B2C. New records in the South In the first 6 months of this year, in the regions of Southern Italy, around 42,000 t of paper and cardboard were collected (the amount collected for the entire year 2000). For the end of the year 2001 forecasts are for around 114,000 t: in only 12 months hence in Southern Italy the quantity of paper and cardboard collected and sent for recycling will have tripled. This was announced on the 19th October at Lucca by Carlo Montalbetti, director general of Comieco, during the seminar the market for waste paper between rulings and opportunities organised during Miac, the Paper Industry Show. All told our country will achieve the objectives set at European level in the 1997/2001 five-year program and incorporated into the Ronchi Decree in 97. Italy is to collect and recycle 45% of paper and cardboard placed on the market for consumption and is to recover another 5%. This is a result of great importance, aboveall if one considers that in the first nine months of this year the international waste paper quotations have dropped by an average of over 30%. This - Carlo Montalbetti told us - is the best demonstration of the effectiveness of the mechanism that Comieco administrates; it lays down that the collection made by the local authorities is financed with the environmental contribution that the cellulose base packaging producers apply directly in their invoices to their customers. It is a mechanism that protects the administration from the rapid price oscillations on the international markets, and enables a strong growth of segregated collection, with enormous benefits for the environment and the economy. After years of massive imports from abroad in order to supply the Italian paper industry, in the year 2000 Italy exported growing rates of waste paper: the reduction of quantities of paper and cardboard sent to the dumps was also accompanied by a significant improvement in the balance of trade.
