| | The South is even closer 276 exhibitors and 4,000 visitors confirm the success of the new formula Medpack, and the south of Italys interest in packaging. This shows support for fairs in the projects of the double made up of the pool of exhibitors and the organisers of the Naples show in the consolidation plan for the South. Which also happens in Bari, where Ipack-Ima... Last September, a few days before the opening of Medpack (Mediterranean exhibition of technologies and products for packaging, the foodstuffs industry, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, and internal industrial transportation systems), Naples seemed to be at the centre of a chain of unfortunate events, so much so that the organisers considered a speedy investigation into the possibility of a postponement. Then the approaches to the exhibition area, blocked by recent flooding, were mostly made accessible again and, most importantly, the NATO summit on security, which was due to take place on the very eve of the exhibition, was cancelled. Thus in the end the decision to stick to the chosen date proved to be the right one and everything went well, or even better than expected. The visitors came and, in the almost unanimous opinion of the exhibitors, they demonstrated a professional and motivated attitude. This is certainly the impression we gained on our stand, because of the many requests for information not only about the publications on display but also about the industries in the sector, in particular who does what?. In our opinion, it was in the area of quality that one had the best sense of an exhibition with an attraction that went beyond the borders of the region, attended by a public in reflective mood, keen to gain deeper awareness, direct contact with suppliers and the opportunity to examine products. On reflection, it seems that a lesson can be learned, which for many is only a confirmation: the user in the South, more than elsewhere, is serviced on the spot. They must have had this in mind at Ipack-Ima Srl, when they remodelled the formula for the Mediter-Pack, assigning to this exhibition in the Naples area a knowledge of the market more applicable to the users area, and better pinpointed than the more international Milan exhibition. And the same considerations must have prevailed when they launched the plan for a second biennial, devoted entirely to the agro-food sector, to take place next year in Bari, the other great Southern exhibition centre. It is to called TIAM and will alternate with Medpack which has already been fixed for October 2003. A targeted proposal It is, therefore, the special economic and cultural features of the region which must receive the attention of operators in the field. These have already been partly identified by the survey commissioned by Ipack-Ima and carried out with a sample of more than 200 companies, from which emerged the widespread awareness of the importance of packaging as a factor of competition and a strong incentive for investment. These indications have now been confirmed by the desire for an exhibition which, as the Managing Director of Centrexpo and Ipack-Ima Srl, Guido Corbella, points out, has been designed to encourage visits of only one day, and extended over the weekend to make things easier for small companies. Of the 4000 visitors, many came from other regions of the South (especially Puglia and Sicily), and one delegation actually came from China! To complete the picture, we must add the 276 exhibitors, 10% of whom were from abroad (Germany and Britain), and 63% from Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia Romagna. These figures, says Mr. Corbella, justify Ipack-Imas major commitment to the South, also rewarded this year by the success of Medprint, the sister fair devoted to the graphic and publishing sectors (which intends to double its size for 2002, Ed.). The figures also highlight the limitations of the present exhibition area and its associated infrastructure, to such an extent that Mr. Corbella has appealed to the local authorities, and in particular the President of the Region, Antonio Bassolino, in order to launch various concrete projects to equip the city with exhibition and accommodation facilities in line with the attractions of the location and the market. At the press conference at the opening of the event, this was echoed by Raffaele Cercola, Chairman of the Oltremare Exhibition, who confirmed the need for a prompt start on a second area devoted to business-to-business exhibitions (already at an advanced planning stage), to serve an economy which in the agro-food sector alone accounts for 400,000 companies involved in production and 20,000 in processing. Devoted to these companies were two conferences, organised respectively by the Istituto Italiano Imballaggio (Italian Packaging Institute), which set out to present to producers and users the latest developments in university research on the subject of packaging (see ItaliaImballaggio, October 2001), and the Istituto Italiano dei Plastici, which focused attention on the quality of products and systems. | | Everyone in Bari in 2002 Known as Tiam (Exhibition of Technologies for the Mediterranean Agro-food Industry), the next exhibition organised by Ipack-Ima, takes place on 13-16 June next year in Bari where according to market surveys carried out for the occasion 40% of the southern Italian agro-food industry is located. A necessary and logical choice, then, supported by the fact that Bari is the location of the other important exhibition centre in the South, famous for the great Fiera del Levante. In the last five years, this mother of all the fairs in the area, at the behest of the responsible of the organisation, Gianni Tursi, has given rise to 18 specialised exhibitions which focused on those industries with their roots in the South. Therefore the project for the relaunch of the local exhibition complex has been aimed at business-to-business. It is also promoted outside the borders, to the markets of Eastern Europe, but also to Greece, Turkey and North Africa. As the Managing Director of Ipack-Ima Srl, Guido Corbella, says, «Tiam has developed from a policy rooted in the area, based on collaboration with local economic and exhibition companies and supported by suitable market studies. The survey carried out for the event has shown that Puglia is a leader in the sectors of vines and wine production, preserves, fruit and vegetables, milk and dairy products and, of course, pasta. There is a good network of particularly dynamic small businesses (the rate of growth here is often higher than the national average) which, however, often have difficulty in reaching exhibitions outside the area». Thus Tiam was created to bring together supply and demand, and can already count on a solid base of support: those producers of technologies for food processing who usually exhibit at the Fiera del Levante, channelled towards the new exhibition. So, even though every new event places an extra burden on an already overcrowded calendar, the logic guiding Tiam is clear, and leads Mr. Corbella to confirm «this new event is the correct response to the emerging needs of Southern Italy». But is there not a risk of encroaching, at least partly, on Naples Medpack, which is close in terms of geography, of market outlets and, to some extent, of market products? «I dont see any duplication between Medpack and Tiam, both because of the difference in time between the two events and the sectors of the market involved. Medpack is an exhibition predominantly devoted to packaging, whereas Tiam centres on the technologies of processing for the wine, preserves, oil, milk, dairy products and pasta industries». | | | |
