| | Packaging trials Scenari has devised a new type of consumer test to check the satisfaction generated by a packaging item and its shelf impact. The test is based on focus groups animated by interactive software, that involves the persons in the individual elements of the projects and enables the gleaning of quality information. Scenari is a service company specialised in market studies. Hence usually it only deals with packaging indirectly, as one of the elements of a project which it called to work on as befits the occasion (upstream from the creation of the packaging or downstream, in check-tests on the consumer). All the same, at the last Medpack the Neapolitan concern - that has a branch in Milan and an important part of its customer base in Rome - presented an analysis tool that focus on packaging and that centre on telematics, consisting of a patented 3D software package. We are dealing with Packaging and Shelves, versions of a single service package called I.T.A.C.A. (Interactive Computer Aided Analysis), used to rate the graphic-visual aspects of a pack in order to study its shelf impact, this without having to physically move to the salespoint. Managing director Roberto Porciello described them to us. The consumer-designer Itaca is a test-package - Porciello explains - or that is an innovatory study tool that we have devised in order to define the ideal layout and content of a new product or an already existing one, this according to the point of view of its current and/or potential target. Starting off from a single concept that is based on 3D interactive software, we have developed two versions that alternatively focus attention on the pack or on the organisation of the shelves and on the brand and product impact on the salesline. Putting it in a nutshell, the product caters for the organisation of a series of motivational focus groups and/or individual interviews, during which the interviewees, with the help of the computer, can interactively construct the ideal product, extracting, combining, manipulating a given number of ideals displayed on the screen. And, thanks to this type of involvement, supplying precious information on the products and the brand as well as on the consumer. New hence the field of application for this type of software, new the results of the research carried out with the consumer, with the further advantage - he adds - of some interesting results on the economical side of things. As Porciello states Itacas also offers advantages in terms of costs, allowing you to avoid the creation of mock-ups of the projects, which the satisfaction ratings are normally carried out on, with evident savings in time and money. This is shown particularly clearly in the application of our system in the publishing trade, for example in occasion of the restyling of Panorama and the launch of Panorama Travel, where it avoided the financially burdensome creation of a Zero Issue of the new magazine, at the same time speeding up presentations. Summing things up, with this tool the operator imports the graphic elements of his project (or that is color, figurative elements, lettering, brand, logo, etc.) identified as the best by the user company, into the computer. Once the consumer group has been set up - current or potential, heavy or light - according to how the research is set out - one works to find out the best configurations, in a sort of reconstruction not only facilitated by the friendlinessof the system, but also by the possibility of going back over what has been done, modifying a background or a character in light of the changes made afterwards. The shelf test Equally effective the tests on the impact of the packaging on the shelf, that Itaca enables you to carry out by computer, in the times and in the ways that best suit each given situation.Normally this type of study - Porciello goes on to rate - is weighed down by the fact that, inside the sales area you have to cordon off an area from the habitual flow of people and goods, to which you bring the subjects that take part in the group and actually carry out the test. It is hence clear that, enabling you to work on the virtual shelf of the computer, in a dedicated environment, Itaca not only offers benefits in terms of logistics but also in terms of the level of the results of the study, favouring concentration and reflection. Here too the software used enables one to represent the alternative layouts on the line (or on the cutting counter), checking the impact and the influence on consumer behaviour. As well as that it also enables one to study the positions of the various brands and subject those taking part to the blind test, that enables one to analyse if and how the changes being examined modify memories and perception. But Itacas applications can also be potentially extend to other situations, as the contacts made by Scenario during the Neapolitan show revealed; During Medpack, we not only registered the enthusiasm of the university students of the design faculty, but also the interest of the operators from the most varied industrial and service concerns, that in turn actively contributed to formulating the tool in their imagining possible uses. Emblematic the case of a consultancy company that assists foreign companies in their operating on the Italian market, that suggested the use of Itaca for checking the impact of foreign products on our market. |
