I prodotti classici

Identificazione automatica
Tools for the supply chain
The eleventh Movint, international industrial handling show and the second edition of ExpoLogistica, dedicated to machines, systems and integrated services for logistics and transportation, will be held together from 3 to the 6 October at the Milan Trade Fair. From the organisers, figures and suggestions on the sectors represented.

New needs emerge in the management of materials, aboveall as far as the storage, transport and delivery phase of goods are concerned, and logistics is coming to the fore not only as an operative but also as a strategic function. Among other things, logistics not only requires that “one identifies the material and positions it correctly, at the right time, in the right sequence” but “that it is also handled with the right information”. On their side of things, the companies, have to be able to turn the supply chain from a debit item to a lever for business, capable of creating value.
Thus in time new criteria of judgement and new expectations from the material transport and handling systems are emerging: to reduce storage time, downtime in production, and handling costs, but also identify new tools that enable the company to guarantee their customers an as rapid and “traceable” delivery of their products as possible. In this context, sectors such as handling and storage, that might have been considered mature, are enjoying a new lease of life and service outsourcing is becoming a strategic choice often seen as obligatory, facilitated by the development of dedicated data processing (in turn stimulated by the web economy).

An integrated offer at the fair
The products and services on show at the next Movint-Expologistica will be of sure interest, also thanks to the variety of products that will feature in the two events.
Organised by Promexpo under the sponsorship of the large trade associations - The Italian Fem (European Handling Association) committee, Aisem, Ailog and Assologistica - the shows are of an international standing offering a heterogeneous range of products: forklift trucks, lifting devices, storage systems, continuous conveyance of weights, industrial shelving, accessories, up to engineering and consultancy services.
In particular, Expologistica offers itself up as a showcase on data processing and telecommunication systems, logistical services (stockage of merchandise, delivery concerns and freight services of various types), transportation, infrastructure, formation and handling of load units (packaging and palletization, slip sheet, picking, sorting and like equipment).
This year, in cooperation with the ICE (Italian Institute for foreign trade) the show will host missions of operators from various middle eastern countries (Libya, Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia), the Far East (China, Indonesia, India and Hong Kong), South America (Chile, Brazil, Venezuela) and Eastern Europe (Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary). That is users, distributors, and largescale importers of equipment for internal handling, as well as logistic heads of large companies, aboveall from companies from the paper, plastic, textiles, food, electronics and pharmaceutical sectors, as well as the supply of logistical services and transports.
Finally, of note the calendar of talks and debates, that as ever stands as a key event, dedicated to giving updates on the most important subjects of the sector. This year a lot of encounters will be particularly dedicated to the heads of small-to-medium-sized firms, with the intent of supplying them with theoretical and technical tools to help them organize their businesses and operate economically at a global level.
Movint-ExpoLogistica will be held at the same time as Rich-Mach (International show for chemical products and show for chemical apparatus and apparatus for analysis, research, controls and biotechnology) to which visitors will have free access.

A composite sector: figures for the market
Means, equipment, plants and system for continuous transport and lifting, storage systems, industrial forklifts, wheels and accessories, electrical accumulators, shelving and warehouse systems: these are the most important product categories that go to make up the heterogeneous panorama of industrial handling.
It is a market that in Italy is worth around 7,000 billion lire and that presents different characteristics and problems that vary from segment to segment. We here present the latest data available, concerning the sectors closest to the packaging sector.

Classical products
The economic balance in the year 2000 of the “historic” segment of internal handling - self- propelled industrial vehicles, continuous lifting and transportation equipment and systems, wheels and accessories - was seen to be positive both on the domestic and on the foreign market, creating one of the best performances of varied engineering. Growth is set at 8.4% on the previous year.

Self-propelled industrial vehicles
In Italy the market of industrial forklifts last year registered a demand for over 31,000 machines, compared to the 27,000 in ‘99, to a value of around 3,000 billion lire. Growth in production was over 15%, drawn by domestic demand, while the foreign market and the Italian builders were able to rely on advantageous exchange rates against the dollar. Thus exports increased by 12% to a value of around 600 billion, and for the year underway a further increase of 5% is predicted. In general the sector follows a positive growthtrend (8-10% for the year 2001), that rewards investment (+12%) and actions on the international market.
The most lively demand concerns “counterbalanced” and “storage” trucks, used in all the merchandise sectors and particularly in distribution. Demand for frontal electrical trucks is also on the up.
At the same time the vast fleet of used trucks is now playing its part in the substitution phase, affecting demand for new products, that are safer and better respect the latest safety standards.
Abroad the main outlet areas for Italian production were seen to be North America (+200% in ‘99) and Africa (+132%), the balance of trade also in Italy’s favour with the other European countries. Here the best partners of Italian industry are France (that absorbed machines for 68 billions in the first half of the year 2000) and Germany (over 42 billion) and Spain with 37 billion; imports aboveall came from the UK, Germany and Korea, while purchases from the US are down drastically (-42%).

Industrial shelving
In the storage segment positive results were seen in the industrial shelving market. Production in seven years went from 84,500 tonnes in 1993 to the over 158,000 with an increase of around 90%, drawn by the demand on the Italian market, aboveall in the centre-north, in the distribution sector, in food, engineering and services.

Automatic identification
Products for automatic identification can be divided up into different “families”, on the basis of technologies used: barcode scanners, barcode printers, batch-, radiofrequency-, shopfloor terminals, ribbons.
The overall turnover of this segment in Italy stands at around 306 billion lire, where the largest share (29%) is accounted for by barcode printers (87.5 billion lire) followed by scanners (73 billion), batch (54.5 billions) and radio frequency terminals (49 billions).
And important share of the market is what is more made up of consumables, that constitute around 12% of the market to a value of 37 billion. Finally, 1% of the market (5 billion) is accounted for by shopfloor terminals, relatively obsolete from a technological point of view. 30% of ID turnover is made on the manufacture/warehousing and delivery/logistics market; 25% in office/retail/sales-force automation, while healthcare accounts for 8% and ticketing 5% (the latter listings having great potential).

Logistica e comunicazione

Logistics and communication
As the past president of Assologistica* Giovanni Leonida states in an interview from which we freely quote - In Italy logistics has been overlooked by all for years. To think that only the last General Plan for Transport has a chapter on the subject, that the Confindustria only started talking about logistics this year and that the Civil Code does not include typical contract applicable to the sector; and there again, department stores regulations go back to before the war, and so on. As the top functionary declares the reasons that have most contributed to generating this delay are aboveall the almost total absence of investments from the world of finance, and the derived lack of a general approach to logistics (producing an underdeveloped demand). In this context, Italy is also seen to be lagging behind the other European countries and worse still, it is not always capable of communicating its own plus points. The example given is that, often the producer from the Far East who wishes to distribute in Europe opens an office in Holland, ignoring the fact that his merchandise has to pass through the Mediterranean, where Gioa Tauro is by far the largest port, thus overlooking the fact that distribution from Italy can allow him to gain at least 5-6 days in terms of time. On this count Leonida cites that, following on from a proposal by Assologistica and thanks to the commitment of Federtrasporto, an Italian Distribution Council is being created as a consortium between companies, with the objective of promoting the sector abroad.

* Assologistica è l’associazione italiana delle Imprese di Logistica, Magazzini Generali, Terminal Operator Portuali, Interportuali e Aeroportuali/Assologistica is the Italian Association of Logistics Firms, Department Stores, Port, Interport and Airport Terminal Operators.

Concentrations and e-commerce
in the future of forklift trucks
The material handling operators are called to satisfy the renewed demands for organisational and economical rationalisation of the various segments, first and foremost modern distribution, featuring an ever stronger integration between producer and distributor. This is the general rating of the trends in the forklift truck segment according to the outgoing Cesab head councillor Raimondo Cinti. Who, what is more, aims his attention at another “capital” phenomenon, or that is the strong process of concentration, that has seen the more important Italian firms flow into the main sector groups: just a few global operators, capable of supplying a complete range, that go from counterbalanced trucks to warehouse vehicles. The consequent concentration of brands and distribution policies - Cinti goes on to consider - is forcing the companies to broaden their own market horizons and find new economies of scale, to broaden their offer with new products and logistical services. But another phenomenon is taking on growing importance: the impact of the net-economy, that is transforming the companies and, aboveall, requires a further adaptation of the distribution network, also affecting the entire transport and service system.

Means for lifting: the strength of the small
As in many segments, also in the lifting machines in Italy one registers a growth of the foreign multinationals: by way of purchase and partnership agreements. All the same, in the considerations of an observer of excellence - Paolo Cavandoli, president of the Italian Association of Systems for Raising, Elevating and Handling, and also the outgoing president of the European Handling Federation - Italy one still has the desire to set up and run a company, and the aggressiveness of the German colossuses continues to be contrasted by Italian firms of a medium to small size. The speculation in production helps, supported also by the onsurge of data processing and electronics in the building of handling and lifting machinery. In particular, in the remote diagnostics and control functions one finds a great use of modern electronic devices that guarantee precision and safety in the various work phases. The design of products and accessories has also improved, with a particular eye to ergonomics.
