E.P. Samples in digital The digital printing of packaging and labels, from a technical point of view and the market, has come of age. Here, with improved performance, is the new Indigo Omnius WebStream for small print-runs, market trials and promotional campaigns. Some years ago, based on an awareness of the development of the trade and the fragmentation of batches of work in the field of packaging production, the founder and Chairman of Indigo, Benny Landa, foresaw the arrival of digital printing. His success [in this forecast] has been rapid and assured, due to the enormous advantages of just in time printing: with the latest graphics (possibly approved only an hour earlier) and with nothing held in stock in the warehouse. In fact, digital printing has still not overtaken roto- or flexogravure. However, with the latest developments in performance and mechanical components, digital printing has been able to demonstrate its efficiency, especially in the setting up of new packaging. This is where the users marketing department works closely with the designer and converter, and wants to be able to make an immediate assessment of any changes in color, image, etc. It is also of great value in producing short sample print-runs, market trials or with products intended for distribution as part of a promotional campaign, where graphics or texts are often needed on the spur of the moment. The latest offering from Indigo for these applications, called the Omnius WebStream, was presented at Converflex and is already in operation with an important printing firm in Lombardy. Progress begins with color Sometimes, says Omnius area sales manager Enrico Rabitti, it is the printer who decides to purchase a digital printer, especially when he is firmly oriented towards service and when he works closely with his customers marketing department. In other cases, however, it is the end customer himself who urges his supplier to update, because when the end user appreciates the many and varied advantages afforded by this technology, he has no alternative. A concrete example of this type of orientation is provided Di.Pi of Treviglio, which creates the trial runs and promotional print-runs for companies such as Parmalat and Ferrero, to name only two. Conversion to digital on the part of this Bergamo company was encouraged by the fact that today Omnius is able to reproduce not only in four-color print but also the colors on the Pantone scale, and is thus able to print special tints. As Mr. Rabitti explains, With the aid of an appropriate department to mix the inks, we have created the bases for orange, violet, green and many other tints, with which we can meet the most complicated requirements. Today, moreover, the WebStream can print on different materials, from 10 micron PP plastic to 400 micron card, including all types of bonded materials, whether in sheet form or in rolls, overcoming the early limitations of feeding materials in. At the same time, we have been researching into the problems of printing in relation to various supports and we are now working to develop a model with an overhead light, for printing large formats or varied combinations. Omnius state of the art The Indigo range of digital offset printers centres around three large groups of machines for commercial and industrial printing and for OEM products. The machines intended for industrial use can be divided, according to their applications, speed and number of colors, into models for printing labels, mainly for packaging or special products such as mouse mats, promotional articles, keyboard membranes, and the like. The Omnius WebStream has been designed specifically for printing flexible packaging from roll to roll, cutting out the classic stages of color separation, preparation of the film, creation of masks and matrices and machine set-up. Printing is directly from the digital files (input data is provided in Adobe PostScript level 3 or PDF) onto various types of substratum of thicknesses from 10 to nearly 400 microns, using paper, plastic film and aluminium foil, either individually or in combination. Using rolls with maximum sizes of 320 mm wide and 400 mm diameter, images up to 308x437 mm can be obtained, in lengths from 280 to 437 mm and with a resolution of 812 dpi. This machine achieves a speed of 437 linear metres, or 1000 four-color frames, per hour, printing up to 6 IndiChrome colors (the extended range of colors established by the Dutch multinational). Finally, a mention of the peripherals 15 inch LCD monitor, CD-Rom, floppy disk unit and Jaz unit the processor (Pentium) and the image disk of 36 GB, with a 100 Base-T net. |
