Packaging - The prebalance for 2000 estimates an increase in production of 3% on 1999, to a total of 14.705.000 t. Growth in turnover is not supposed to be above +4% on 99, showing a development that is not in line with production trends (+2,8%) and the rate of inflation (2,5%). To reach the same if would have had to be above 5%. For 2001 a growth in the packaging industry of 2.7/2.9 % is predicted. Aluminium - The weak consumption at world level has depressed aluminium quotations. The drop in prices though is being slowed by the continuos and massive reduction of activity, aboveall by the plants situated on the northwestern coast of the US, where around 90% of the production capacity will be at a standstill for some two years or so. The foundries are in fact penalised by a serious lack of power. Chemicals - In Italy the growth of chemical production for the year 2001 should stand at around 2%, exactly half that of the year previous (4%) . This trend is also in line with other countries such as Germany (0.5 in 2001, 3.5 in 2000), the UK (1.5 in the year 2001 against 3.4 in the year 2000), France (2.2 in 2001, 3.5 in the year 2000). Hence a recession has been avoided thanks to the good run of foreign demand, favored by the super dollar. Situation this that makes one hope for a stronger growth (3%) in the year 2002. Plastics - The plastics converting industry closed the year 2000 with a turnover of 32,500 billions, marking a growth of around 18% compared to 1999. The considerable growth was in part due to an increase in actual amount of quantities sold and partially to be put down to the increase in the use of plastic raw materials by the companies in the sector featuring in the second half of 1999 and the first half of the year 2000. As far as the conversion of plastic is concerned the main outlet is packaging, that grew in real terms by 5/6%, a growth of 4% being foreseen for the year 2001. Raw papermill materials market - A notable decliner is chemical pulp or cellulose which trended downward in April, compared to the same period the previous year, and continues its prolonged decline (20% average). Prices have fluctuated in a range between 900 1,035 lire/kg. Solidifying its position, the price of chemicals for papermill products are stable and on a par with rates for recycled paper pulp. Market for cardboard - Following a stable period, the cardboard sector is seeing some particularly pronounced movement, most notably gray cardboard for tubes declining by 10%, enhanced gray cardboard for tubes by 5.2% and kraft for tubes by 2.6%. Hosted at Converflex-Grafitalia last June in Milan, with the President of Confindustria as a guest, the Assografici general assembly featured a review of the figures for the balance for the year 2000 and the plans (and hopes) for the future. Assografici: plans reviewed at assembly The paper, converting, print and publishing segment is made up of 31,151 enterprises, most of which small-to-medium-sized, that employ 255,343 persons and that in the last financial year made an overall turnover of 69,840 billion (+13.5%). The growth in the sector is all the more striking in that it follows on from other good years (+7.3% in 98 and +0.8% in 99), also if - as Emanuele Piovano, President of the Assografici trade association warns - the rise is as much due to the increase of the quantity produced as it is to the increase in raw material and power costs. The data summarised by Piovano in opening up the recent annual assembly (held during Converflex-Grafitalia) also highlighted other positive indicators, among which gross investments (3,877 billion lire) in support of the purchase of machinery and equipment. On top this figures indicate an interesting growth in the paper converting segment (+4.6%), with turnover up by 14.7% (12,500 billion) and prices up 10%. Still on converting, exports have now risen to 3,547 billion (+19.2%) seen against imports standing at 1,255 (+18.8%), leaving a positive balance of trade of 2,292 billion (19.4%). Competitiveness as objective Commenting the figures and the overall market situation, Piovano expressed the hope that the new executive will speedily tackle the problems to help bridge the competitive gap that features in Italian national system, taking heed of the indications of the course to be plotted expressed in the Confindustria document that Assografici supports to the full. On its side of things, the association has launched a program of undertakings to be implemented in the two-year period currently underway covering five main subject areas. First and foremost, the association is drawing up guidelines on the subject of safety at work and intends creating a CD to help companies tackle related problems. On the hot topic of training the association is working at increasing attendance in schools and universities where graphics courses are paramount (special attention currently being focused on the Naples area), while as far as internationalisation is concerned the association has started up market studies and a program of workshops in order to increase knowhow in the various outlet areas (the first study, on Russia, should now have been completed). Finally, on the subject of communication, Assografici is aboveall committed to developing its Internet site, with a fortnightly newsletter as a follow-up, while company promotion and updating is being enhanced by studies on the sector (the results of the studies commissioned by the Bocconi School of Management were divulged during the general assembly) and overviews of the technological and market trends underway. Apeal (Association of European Producers of steel for packaging) ordered an international consumer survey to investigate consumer attitudes and perceptions regarding different packaging concepts in the beverage segment. Trends and expectations in beverage consumption One of the challenges of the European steel for packaging industry is to keep abreast of the ever evolving demands in the market-place. Faced with such challenges, the industry is becoming increasingly aware of the importance of adapting its communication and market activities to address the needs and expectations of the end-consumer. A first step is made in this direction from Apeal by revealing a synthesis of the results of a consumer survey in the beverage market. 2,400 interviews, approximately 400 per country, were carried out in six European countries (UK, France, The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Spain). A total of 10 packaging concepts were tested, including 5 steel containers and 5 alternative containers in plastic, glass and carton composite. The steel container concepts that were tested included: ergonomically shaped can; self chilling can; reclosable can; widget can for improved foam quality; pouring device. Emergence of new age drinks One of the critical issues that was apparent during the survey were two very important market characteristics which are rapidly evolving today. The first is new age drinks which in the majority of cases are non alcoholic health drinks such as fruit juices, nectars, milk products, low calorie substitute meals and food supplements. The second is different volumes adapted to these evolving markets and to consumer needs according to circumstances. There is currently a major difference in the requirements of these consumers where beverages are appreciated more for their food value than simply a liquid refreshment, and their nutrient value is the prime interest when selecting a product. The fact that they are consumed on the spot by active consumers who are in the majority women and children requires smaller volumes, smaller diameter containers and pouring devices for more convenient handling. Product perceptions and trends The perception of the new can concepts highlighted critical issues such as: more convenience, more appealing designs to attract the consumers attention, improved flavours, better price quality ratio. Environmental issues were not as relevant in the consumers preference. The issues of highest importance perceived by the consumer were its lightness, its appearance, which should reflect product quality and safety, as well as being appealing to a wide range of consumers. It was evident that innovation in the conception of new containers was of major importance for the image of the steel can. Convenience, with a preference for pouring devices and the self chilling capability were high on the consumer preference List. The introduction of these concepts would generate market share but to achieve this, effort needs to be directed towards the market requirements of women and children: smaller volumes; improved convenience in handling and pouring; new sectors such as top quality juices, nectars, and dairy products such as milk shakes and yoghurts. To differentiate these products in the market place, new designs, shapes and pouring devices are imperative together with a new image of quality, healthier and safer beverages to meet the requirements of the young consumer. Tra i relatori: Marco Sachet (Istituto Italiano Imballaggio), Walter Facciotto (Vice Direttore Conai), Stefano Lavorini (rivista ItaliaImballaggio), Roberto Valdinoci (direttore Rilegno), Saverio Mayer (Presidente Commissione Marketing Gifco), Paolo Volta (rivista Uomini e trasporti), Marco Dariol (General Manager PACCES Europe), Giampaolo Mezzanotte (Responsabile Supply chain Operations Chep Italia), Ulisse Pedretti (Coop Italia), Sebastiano Cerullo (Segretario generale Qualipal It), Luigi Terzi (Logistic Manager S. Pellegrino), Barchi Remo (Barchi Trasporti). Packaging, protagonist of the logistics process Ailog, the Italian Logistics Association, is summoning experts and operators to the Palazzo delle Stelline in Milan on 11 October 2001, where they will be able to air their opinions on the sector. The watchword at the third convention organized by the association will be reuse, this also due to the profound changes the world of production and industry are undergoing. By now the concept of different and more intelligent usage has also been transferred onto pallets and fruit crates, onto bins for loose products, recycled plastic flacons, with companies (in particular packaging concerns) thrust towards innovation. But not only that: some materials are replacing others and consumer needs are evermore conditioning the choices regarding products, this also due to a shift of consumption towards B2C (Business to Consumer). And thanks to the first University course set up at Parma the packaging technologist finally emerges from anonymity to duly assume his/her rightful role. These are all questions that also affect the logistics system, where packaging plays a leading role. The encounter wishes to review the situation so as to reflect on the past, but aboveall to note trends in developments for the future. A full program of events has been scheduled that include delving into the use of various types of packaging, throwing light on the constantly changing Italian and European directives as well as to the practical consequences the ongoing changes and trends are having on the logistical system seen as a whole. The salutations (from Giorgio Maggiali, Ailog President and Mariano Bolognesi of the Ailog board of directors packaging workgroup), will be followed by direct talks highlighting trends in packaging demand and their effects on the logistics chains, focussing on the space for intervention still possible in order to innovate materials, products and services. In the afternoon the works will proceed with the study of some company case histories. The speakers will include: Marco Sachet (Istituto Italiano Imballaggio), Walter Facciotto (Vice Director of Conai), Stefano Lavorini (ItaliaImballaggio magazine), Roberto Valdinoci (Head of Rilegno), Saverio Mayer (President of Gifco Marketing Commission), Paolo Volta (Uomini e trasporti magazine), Marco Dariol (General Manager PACCES Europe), Giampaolo Mezzanotte (supply chain head of Operations Chep Italia), Ulisse Pedretti (Coop Italia), Sebastiano Cerullo (General Secretary of Qualipal It), Luigi Terzi (Logistics Manager S. Pellegrino), Barchi Remo (Barchi Trasporti). New multilayer bottle technology Over a year and a half ago Kortec revealed plans to develop a revolutionary co-injection technology to incorporate both barrier and PCR materials into the same preform (3 materials, 4 layers) at monolayer cycle times. At the upcoming Nova-Pack Europe 2001 Congress - (18-19 September) at the Forum Hotel in Munich, Germany - Kortec will show the successful results. In their presentation, Kortec will share information on market applications (beer, juice etc.) and the system equipment platforms this new technology will be based upon. Kortec is now rolling out super-high production systems based on Huskys Index machine platform. The result is the highest production co-injection system in the world. Cycle time and productivity models will be indicated to show how companies can produce the least expensive, highest-barrier containers. This includes multilayer containers for beer and juice with oxygen barrier properties of more than 60X - the highest ever seen!
