| | Printing & converting at the fair Figures concerning exhibitors, space and visitors of the 2001 edition rate Grafitalia and Converflex among the leading European trade shows. A success buoyed by a favourable market situation and important international agreements like that newly-signed with the Birmingham Ipex. After a slow start, the public converged on Converflex-Grafitalia 2001 in great numbers, soon showing itself to be of quality, or that is specialised and motivated. Indeed show organizers also registered a record attendance, end-of-show figures standing at 55,000 (11% foreigners, mostly from the Mediterranean basin and eastern European countries) along with the already officially announced figures for exhibitors (1,190 from 25 countries) and surface covered (100,000 m2 gross and 53.000 m2 net). Beyond mere figures several features highlighted this last edition of the show. For example the use of the new Portello pavilions, as well as some older buildings in Milans vast exhibition complex, that created some backwaters away from the great throng of visitors. This however was offset by the huge efforts made by the show organisers, for example in simplifying and making the setting up of the stands more efficient, this by fixing appointments for the unloading and assembly of machinery, thus avoiding the classic logjams. The same commitment was seen to be applied to visitors, whose entry into the fair was facilitated through on-line pre-registration - even if the average Italian appears loath to take advantage of the same. Hospitality offered was made even warmer and more pleasant by providing spaces and facilities for the visiting public and for the press. Even more so than other fairs, Converflex-Grafitalia confirmed its importance as an event for significant official communication made by the companies and by the sector institutions. Among the most important meetings held we cite the Assografici and Assocarta forum on Vision 2000 and the Pro Carton round table (in addition to a host of other meetings where interesting topics concerning technology and business management were broached). Greater quality, also in communications A further new feature not to be taken for granted, introduced in this last Converflex-Grafitalia concerns the method used for registering visitors that, different from the past, only counted first entries.. «Even if this makes comparison with the preceding year less direct - explained Centrexpo administrator Guido Corbella - we have adopted the new US/UK standard to get a clearer reading of the data, facilitating the communication of the data and making it more transparent. The huge attendance was also noteworthy because of the big increase in the number of foreigners compared to previous records. On another level, the fielding of a particularly advanced offer and the company commitment in decking out their stands and in presentation - a further sign of faith in the show - are all features that the show organizers can go proud of». The new Portello pavilions, which hosted the majority of the stands, contributed to better communication amongst the exhibitors, while those writing this article wish to state that the Milan Fair services might be improved, with particular regard to registration and parking. However - Corbella adds - theres another factor that spurred interest in the two shows: the good overall market situation of the various industrial sectors involved, that has helped generate optimism and the will to invest. Sectors enjoying growth The authorities representing the different trade associations involved with the show were all there at the opening ceremony, hailed by the president of the Italian Confederation of Industries (Confindustria) Antonio DAmato. Everyone was able to celebrate an end-of-year balance showing significant growth, not showing too much concern as to the signs of a slowdown registered in the first months of the year. In fact an overall favourable market situation emerged from the figures cited in the opening speeches that is spurring on growth in the various segments of the sectors represented. According to data from Centrexpo press office, in the year 2000 paper closed its balance up by 5%, the graphics industry up 3.5% (marking its third consecutive year of growth), papermaking and more generally flexible converting put in a +4.6% and equipment +4.4%. And thats not all: exports posted excellent results, with 12% growth in machines, 18% in graphics and 20% in converting, cumulatively generating nearly 3,200 billion Italian lire. Paper, which has never showed a great vocation to foreign trade, for the first time actually registered an export share of approximately 30%. This growth in volume, especially in recent years, corresponds to the growth in technology, mostly spurred on by developments in pre-print and digital printing (represented at the fair by over 170 companies that attracted many operators), as well as supports and inks. Only apparently in contrast, the organisers say, the reconfirmation of the central nature of paper - incontrovertible even in the digital era - and the return to cardboard in its different forms and applications. | | And Converflex flies to Birmingham The athletic Ipexia, virtual lady of the show, will guide visitors around Ipex 2002, British print, converting and organised media show organised by IIR Exhibitions, with which Centroexpo has signed an important agreement for the licensing of the Converflex brand. The agreement, made official during Converflex 2001, constitutes a change for the Birmingham quadrennial show, scheduled from 9 to the 17 April 2002 at the National Exhibition Centre. In fact for the first time a well-defined space - in actual fact pavilion 19 - will be dedicated to converting and identified as Converflex @ Ipex. As Guido Corbella, who negotiated the deal for Centrexpo, comments with satisfaction - The first beneficiary is the sector industry, that now finally has its own fair in the UK. If up to now Ipex had consolidated an image of excellence in pre press, in commercial printing and in publishing, converting was not strongly represented, to the point where the relative companies did not consider Ipex one of their fairs. From the point of view of the organizers, taking on the Converflex brand means having an effective promotional tool at their disposal, capable of communicating the integration of the various merchandise sectors straight off. In actual fact, not only has Milan Converflex become a fair attended at international level, but it has also given birth to analogous shows in China and in Brazil, even further consolidating its good name around the world. The recent agreement with the British evidently stands as a further stage in this policy of reinforcing the Italian fair system and what is more gives Centrexpo the exclusive rights in selling space to Italian firms, that are thus able to benefit from a direct point of reference close to home. This is a policy that Centrexpo has been carrying on by way of partnerships and buy-ups on many fronts, and has led to its winning a position as the most important organizer, alongside Ipack-Ima, of shows specialising in machine tools and like systems, with a yearly sale of over 50,000 m2 of surface space to its credit. Some 1,500 companies have already signed up for the coming Ipex 2002, situated in 16 pavilions totalling 85,000 m2, 30% bigger than the preceding edition. All told the space dedicated to converting will be around 10,000 m2. | | | |
