i costi?
| | Creative structures Creativity and engineering, an inseparable pair, and often critical. A team of specialists has identified the strategic value of specific advice on structural design. The proposals from FutureBrand Gio Rossi Associati. The Gio Rossi agency has been active on the Italian commodities market for more than thirty years, concerned with the innovation and the image of brands and products. Today, as part of a strategic alliance that this well-established agency has recently entered into with FutureBrand (the worlds n° 1 structure in the branding/packaging sector), it now offers an extremely specialised service dedicated to structural design, thus ushering in a very important and especially unprecedented novelty in the world of Italian agencies. The aim is to be able to manage complex projects in the best possible manner. Gio Rossi is well known on the Italian market for its undoubted merits and more than thirty years experience. In fact, over the years the agency has faced many a structural project. «But the difference now, as opposed to the past, lies in their level of complexity» explains Carlo Aliverti, Director of the Consumption Division at FutureBrand Gio Rossi Associati. «Indeed, new developments of a certain size calling for a lot of engineering involve significant project considerations in the field, that need to be managed with dedicated, suitable tools. Now our agency can face far more complex and vast structural jobs. A plus that lets us unfurl our creativity to the full, as we can offer active back-up for the client, even during the pre-commissioning or upgrading of lines, given that we work hand-in-hand with the clients technical offices» concludes Aliverti. Italian creativity, international technology FutureBrand Gio Rossi Associati, therefore, linked by a double thread to its UK head offices, offers 100% Italian creativity, supported by British technical, design and structural competence: particularly specialised personnel, skills and instrument, all dedicated to this specific sector. In fact, FutureBrands London HQ has - in addition to its own creative office (the Orange office) - a workshop for the construction of prototypes (the ModelShop) working in close collaboration with the Italian designers and which makes the mock-ups needed to present the creative ideas and to run consumer tests during market research. It can also count on a technical office (the Blue office), responsible for studying the technological and production aspects of the product in depth, to make it as suitable as possible to the companys actual production capacity. A complex job, with the agency using a series of IT platforms of different levels to suit the required specifications: from Adobe Photoshop to Alias, Waverfront, Solid Works and even Vellum 3D that, used on the different hardware platforms, let the agency dialog perfectly and work in parallel with clients and the various technical departments. ModelShop The workshop deserves a special mention, offering modelling and prototype services the ModelShop, in other words - and performing a highly important job that requires a huge amount of expertise. In fact, this is where the models are produced, in very small numbers for sampling (from zero to a hundred examples), typically used for quantitative and qualitative tests. Or more simple mock-ups are created in foam for in-house presentations. Not to mention versions that are more or less faithful to what will be the final version of a form of packaging, using, for instance, material of similar density, and thus of the same weight. Special resins are also used, to give the impression of transparent materials, letting one see the liquid contents within, and then finally mock-ups that are so perfect that one could be forgiven for taking them for the real thing. But
the cost? «There are some particularly refined and perfect models, requiring a lot of work, and so they end up being rather expensive, just as the project fees can also be higher for structural design, compared to projects that require no such intervention. It should also be noted that the complexity of these operations normally leads to the design and creation of new production lines or the upgrading of existing lines, which also represents a financial burden. Of course - concludes Aliverti - the size of these figures varies depending on the difficulty of the project. Then again, in some cases, a good structural design can also help optimise production costs. Because its a flexible tool, that lets one get various types of result». And the examples given bear witness to the results of excellence. Putting the theory into practice a Award-winning chains - The design tool offered by FutureBrand Gio Rossi Associati has been adopted by an Italian producer of snow chains (based in the province of Como): the addition of structural design was fundamental in giving the client a turn-key study, and so ready to be put straight into production. The bazaar department of broadscale distribution would appear to be insensitive to the theme of pack design to date. This is a reflection made also by the management of König, who wishing to be in a higher and to stand out from the rest in this considered proposing its snow chains in a new form of packaging, of certain impact and functional all the same time. An object capable of offering a technical image, that would evoke a concept of qualitative, technologically advanced design. FutureBrand Gio Rossi Associati thus started with the idea of alloy hub cabs, a detail of great appeal for engine fans, something that makes all the difference in terms of style, practicality and technology. A theme that was developed into different solutions, until a project of unusual shape emerged: a triangular case with rounded corners, made from two silvered plastic shells, with three handles and three standing surfaces. A study that focussed on practicality, as well as the distinctive features. FutureBrand Gio Rossi Associati gave the client a project complete with technical specifications (developed to suit the clients existing production lines, and which the client will actually use) so that the client could start production autonomously, as wished. A turn-key design, that won the agency the Grand Prix 2001 award. Structural design to save
- A good structural design can also help keep production costs down. This was the case with the Smarties Family Pack (Nestlé Europe), a product that has no need of presentation: consumed mainly by kids aged up to 10 throughout the western world, Nestlé Europe wanted to extend the consumer target, to tempt even adults. Moreover, it wanted to cut packaging costs - the characteristic cardboard tube, costing about 850 Lira to produce. In order to meet the first objective, Nestlé decided to create a family pack. FutureBrands solution led to the creation of a thermoformed polypropylene box for easier stacking, as well as improved impact on the shelf and easier storage in the home. Thanks to this intervention, production costs were cut by almost half (about 500 Lira). Special note: the project was completed in just sixteen weeks. Coca-Cola more and more personalised - A complex project was developed for the Coca-Cola draught taps in the UK, and in various versions, implying great efforts in design and production. This classic firm has always adopted a brand strategy that allows for the chance to drink Coca-Cola always and everywhere. In this sense, FutureBrand was assigned the task to develop personalised draught taps, to create a strong brand presence. Different devices to be used in various types of British places, falling into different categories: restaurants and in places for the young, followed by city pubs, and then out-of-town venues, frequented mostly by families, together with fast food outlets. Thus the project involved the creation of three solutions to suit the targets: the Monolith, the Button and the Lenticular. The first solution the Monolith - is a refined object, created from a single block as its name implies, using the classic bottle as its symbol, playing with essential single colour for contrast, leaving very little room for the Coca-Cola red, just in the central section. A solution that plays on the origins of the brand, in this case destined for in places, with a young target, good spending power and always following the latest trends. The second version the Button is simpler, focussing on the impact of the shape that recalls a large button in the central part of the tap, and in a rather classic colour, in line with the companys usual style. The Lenticular the third design - is the basic design for a tap to be used in places frequented by families and kids. This is a project characterised by flexibility, where in fact one can replace the central part of the device to allow for sponsorship or personalising. |
