Nasce Bosch Rexroth
Bosch Rexroth came into being

Superare i confini

With our feet on the ground...
... and our head as high as the inventor. This could be the motto of Toscana Automazioni, a small company with craftsmanship at its heart which specialises in the manufacture of filling machines. A company which knows how to listen and to respond promptly, and which is building steadily towards the future with industrious modesty and an awareness of the state of the art.

“Small”, at least at the moment, but happy. That is how they appear, father, mother and son - Pier Luigi and Rudj Bianchini (we are in an area of fierce individuality, even in terms of names) and Roberta Goti – proprietors of Toscana Automazioni Industriali.
There are several good reasons for this: the father, who started as a talented craftsman, also had the ability to become an entrepreneur and – a rarity – he later had the good fortune to find the same inclinations and ability in his son. As he simply states, “It’s a good thing, because to make progress experience isn’t enough. You have to know how to innovate and this is why the world belongs to the younger generation”. But even this is not enough: the mother, in her turn, has shown an outstanding aptitude for administration and outside contacts, successfully completing the circle of talents.
In this way, through the contributions of two generations, the company was founded ten years ago and has bean steadily growing at an annual rate of 20-25%, specialising in the design and construction of filling machines, mainly for the cosmetics, industrial detergent and chemical industries. The nature of the company is typical of the classic Italian family business, but because of this it is, by definition, outside the normal scheme of things, due to the individuality of its proprietors.
This is what makes the company unique and leads it to take on projects which are often daring but always approached calmly and with a great sense of realism.

Breaking the bounds
To break through barriers, it is first necessary to establish what they are. This is the way that Toscana Automazioni Industriali proceeds: always strictly focused on filling and stoppering machines, the company has a basic range of machines, in most cases intended for the average production system, but complemented by simpler models (“designed for smaller companies and developing markets”) and faster ones (up to 20,000 bottles per hour).
The filling machines – either monobloc or in two parts, linear or rotary – are at the heart of the system, and can be supplemented, at the client’s request, with machines for labeling, ink-jet coding, placing in cartons and other functions, produced by manufacturing partners.
The standard range is enhanced significantly by machines made to order: Toscana Automazioni is an entrepreneurial company with a long history of design, and can thus allow for significant modifications, for example in the field for a long time occupied by assembly line machines, for the most part specialised, which account for 10% of the total turnover.
As Pier Luigi Bianchini explains, “Even though today it isn’t like thirty or forty years ago, when a company could make dozens of products, machines made to order are still a big commitment and not infrequently throw up important modifications which we can later integrate into our standard models. In fact, although on the one hand it is necessary to concentrate on a few products of exemplary quality, on the other we can’t stop innovating. We have to keep up with technological developments and respond to changing demand. But that isn’t all. We cater to companies of several types and sizes, with whom we have continuing good relations. However, the production world, particularly in Italy, is made up for the most part of small companies, each of which has its own special needs, and at the same time they all need to keep costs and time under control. It is especially to cater for them that we must always be in a position to go beyond normal limits, if only by a centimetre, in terms of availability and efficiency”.

The designer and the doctor
This is how the latest monobloc machine for pharmaceuticals was created (which replaces three individual machines). It was designed through pressure from a company which had big problems of space.
Bianchini explains, “The real designer is the customer: it is he who identifies the problems and provides the information to help solve the problems. The designer can be compared to a doctor, who is able to cure the patient effectively only if he is prepared to listen, without insisting on imposing preconceived remedies. And also,” adds Bianchini, almost affectionately, “the machine is like a living thing, which moves and interacts with man, always presenting the designer with new satisfactions”.
Naturally, to this ability to listen must be added prompt response, and the good reputation of Toscana Automazioni also stems from the fact that, for that customer with the problems of space, the correct solution and the finished project were reached in little more than a month. This is why the Bianchinis, father and son, can with conviction confirm the value of craftsmanship: “These days things are well thought out, with full attention paid to avoiding wasted time. This leads to a re-evaluation of the art of doing things well and using ingenuity to come up with better and better solutions, making the most of the promptness of response and clarity of relationships which only small, flexible companies can provide. We have chosen this path, and it is also why we have rejected looking for hasty growth, so that we can control the main variables of the company system, above all the quality of a product designed and built in-house and assembled outside by a qualified network of partners. Our company’s competitiveness does not only depend on price – which, however, we manage to contain, and relate to the type of product – but also on the reliability and performance of our machines which are guaranteed by careful selection of materials, constructors and the various components”.

Different tools for different applications
The flexibility of thinking and organisation at Toscana Automazioni results in its presence in various outlet sectors – at present cosmetics is the most important, followed by detergents and chemicals – which include several little-known niche markets.
For example, the Tuscan company’s filling machines are the most widely used by Italian producers of ‘limonina’, due to its their ability to deal with the special characteristics of this product.
The same can be said of filling machines for solvents and catalysts (the latter are substances which solidify quickly and require speedy removal at the end of the cycle), designed with particular attention to the washing and sanifying stages. This is also true of anti-explosive versions “which no company builds willingly, and we proceed with a caution gained from several decades of experience”.
If Toscana Automazioni’s technicians are supported at the planning stage by the versatility of their software (using CAD), two further features have become even more important to the operations of the company: the progressive integration of electronic components, essential to increase the accuracy, flexibility and speed of many operations, and service which guarantees contact with the customer after the sale. In both cases, the contribution of the younger generation has been fundamental. As Rudj Bianchini explains, “Naturally from time to time we make an evaluation of what is the best solution but generally replacing volumetric filling with the new electronic system has brought enormous advantages, of which the greatest are the change of format and control. It is this, as well as the guarantee of prompt technical assistance, which has continually increased the company’s competitiveness. So we are set up to be able to deal with matters from close at hand, both directly and through our consultants, regarding developments in technology and products”.
But that is not all. Among the projects of a company which is intent on not trying to run before it can walk, there are some unexpected turns and daring ideas. Thus, just a few kilometres away, Toscana Automazioni has started construction work on new premises, in an area occupied by a group of technologically advanced industries, “with a dozen other companies bigger than us, which have accepted our presence”. Delusions of grandeur? Not at all, yet another example of an awareness of their limits: small is beautiful, but unity is strength.
