All’s well that goes well
Coffrets in Pusterla: or rather when Italian style makes the difference.

Don’t be amazed if, too often compelled to note the vices and habits of the Italians, this time I sing the praises for the great work done in France by my countrymen. Laying aside the timeworn list of pleasantries, that all the same are often the salvation of our national dignity, I am proud to be able to say that the Italians can operate as well as anybody, with that added courtesy and decency typical of those who have to toil to have their merits recognised.
I do not bring earthshattering news capable of carrying the scene, nor can I boast revolutionary managerial theories or infallible commercial strategies; nor am I in a position to field histories of industrial dynasties, of multinational groups or intergalactic companies.
More simply, while going easy on the superlatives, I would like to mention an Italian concern - Cartografica Pusterla, “small” successful paper converter specialised in creating cases for high range products (cosmetics and perfumery) - that has bought up an even “smaller” titled French concern - Coffrets Création, entirely dedicated to the production of boxes and cases for luxury products, from porcelain to spirits to haute couture.
But I aboveall wish to highlight the unusual epilogue, two years on from the signing of the contract, that turns this event of normal administration from being a capital operation, into a merger of individual characters and features, sentiments, wills and skills. And perhaps also worries too.
I got this impression on the occasion of the first visit of a group of Italian workers - I also went with them - to the French production site, meantime considerably restructured and extended by its new owners.
The atmosphere was that of special, festive occasions, like the visit of a far-off relative of one has only heard speak of up to then.
The curiosity and the group spirit were palpable and the initial suspicion with which the French workers viewed their “colonizers” soon evaporated with the awareness of everyone belonging to the same project, capable of giving a purpose to the daily run of things.
Wine and food also helped people to familiarize, making up for the linguistic difficulties. And howevermuch French and Italians inevitably ended up in their distinct groups, I sensed a common sentiment of reciprocal respect, founded on the recognition of the value of work, whether this be ones own or that of others.
I think that the merit goes mostly to the owners of the Cartografica Pusterla, of whom I cite Giuseppe Meana, and the creator of Coffrets Création, Madame Thomas, still at the helm of the company in the role of general manager. It is in fact my personal conviction that the style of these people is the example of how one can offer reason and reality to relations constituted bydignity and respect.
In particular, one has to give Meana the merit of his shrewd action, getting the best out of the legacy of human resources and abstaining from simplistically imposing his own organizational models and his own work methods. At the same level Thomas showed intelligence in accepting the change, bolstered by the awareness and pride (could it have been otherwise?) of having always acted well and continuing to act with determination and enthusiasm.

My most heartfelt greetings
Stefano Lavorini

The reasons behind the change
Cartographica Pusterla, at the end of 1999, bought up 80% of Coffrets Création, the French producer of covered boxes. The two companies, even though different in size, have the same approach to the market in common: capacity to interact with the interlocutor, of whom one has to «aboveall understand the needs and to whom on has to propose solutions tailored to the same - Giuseppe Meana, general manager of the Venegono-based paperworks explains. We decided to integrate our traditional output (80% dedicated to monomaterial folding cases and 20% to covered boxes) with the expertise of Coffrets, that has an excellent reputation on the French market. Main purpose of the buy-up - Meana goes on to say - is to improve our presence at European level, as well as enhance our offer and aim at more important volumes. While continuing to consider cosmetics packaging, perfumery and toiletry as our select outlets, we are convinced we also have something to say in tableware, jewellery, cognac as well as clothing. The customers of the French company are in fact of the calibre of Christoffles, Hermes, Cartier, to cite but some, that have kept up the taste and care for the product, typical of the spirit of evolved craftwork, capable of combining technological features linked to production with the pleasure of working by hand and with love of detail». Cartografica Pusterla (47 employees) closed the year 2001 with a turnover of 9.2 million Euro, while Coffrets Création (50 employees) made over 3.4 million Euro in the last financial year.
