• Marjan Smit (I.S.A.

Following the market
As tradition has it, the autumn assembly organized by Giflex (the Italian Flexible Packaging Group) was marked by two distinct moments: the first, reserved to members, dedicated to “private” reflections on the evolution of the market and the run of the segment. The second, open to a broader public, was held in the name of technological enhancement, on subjects with a strong impact for the world of converting. S.L.

That the “future and current” fortunes of the economy (but one would be more right in saying society as a whole and of mankind) are being subjected to tremendous backlashes is a wellknown fact.
It is in times like these, confused and full of uncertainty, that the capacity to trace out an alternative path enabling one to pick ones way amidst the unforeseen and what is certain becomes indispensable, on the one hand bearing witness to the capacity to “venture beyond” and on the other paying considerable attention to the market.
This can be recognised as one of the merits of the Italian Flexible Packaging group (Giflex - Assografici).
Without hushing up the worries of the overall market situation, the association has in fact managed to concentrate the attention of the numerous guests (converters and producers that at various levels are part of the flexible converting sector) on some subjects of a technological and management nature that “weigh” heavily on the segment.
The Italian converters seem to have gone through 2001 at “two speeds”. If in the first half of the year they were able to benefit from a good run of demand and a balancing up of raw material costs, with consequent improvement to profitability, starting off from September (but the first signs were already seen in May) however this positive trend suffered a slowdown. The overall performance of the segment at any rate is very similar to the previous year. What is more by definition the flexible packaging sector is doubly bound to the food industry, hence being affected in a limited fashion by the strong oscillations that feature in the world economy.
Here the Italian converters - not being able to intervene on the costs of the raw materials - have tried to increase their own competitivity, playing on skills acquired in structuring materials and improving production processes, without obviously waiving the severe standards that govern the sector.
These are the topics that Ruggero Gerosa (president) referred to in his introduction, remembering among other things that «the work carried out in the segment should not so much be considered as a finishing point, but as a basis from which to start to improve and renew oneself, this in harmony with a reality that is continuously changing.
New world equilibriums, globalization, strong industrial concentrations, development of data processing systems: all these things oblige us to review our business models and modes of response, so as not to lose ground in a context where catching up again will become evermore difficult».

A study day
- Held at the Naples Industrial Union, last 23 November during the encounter, in which the speakers followed on from each other, suggesting some reflections in terms of product safety, the development of material and technology and environmental rulings and standards in general. Or there again, the opportunities of the web, with the idea of a virtual market of flexible packaging, where producers all told could take on a greater critical weight, share services and, what counts most, present information useful to the business. We here publish the detailed program of the talks (available from Giflex for those who want to go further into the matter):
• Valter Rocchelli (P.D.C.) offered a resumé of the results of a study on rating the perception threshold of solvents, used in the rotogravure printing of flexible materials liable to come into contact with foodstuffs.
• Marjan Smit (I.S.A. BV) listed the standards and the certification required at European level, governing hygiene and safety for food packaging.
• G. Bolke (Henkel Adesivi) developed the subject of European standards covering polyeurethane adhesives used in flexible packaging.
• M.A. Nobile (Institute for the technology of compound materials of the University of Naples) gave outlines as to the properties of the polyolefinic based metalised films, with reference to gaseous exchanges.
• G. Bolcheni (Nuroll) described the developments of polyester barrier film.
• B. Matson (Applied Optical Ltd) focussed attention on the use of holography in packaging.
• A. Molari (Coates Lorilleux) and Luigi Floridia (Sun Chemical) have defined, from the point of view of technology and standards, the quality of inks destined for food packaging.
• G. Ghisolfi (Surplus) suggested opportunities and benefits of an e-marketplace dedicated to packaging.
• G. Butti (Barco) informed on the advances in preprint technology.

Prizewinning flexible - Set up by Giflex to award the evolution of packaging in terms of communication, this year the Graphic Star competition saw some significant entries, the jury being hard put in choosing the winners. Reserved to Giflex associated companies producing flexible packaging, Graphic Star is in its fourth edition and, as the rules have it, the print types (flexography and rotogravure) are considered separately. The representational nature of the contents and memorable image are fundamental results obtainable through design, the right balance between color and graphics, the depth and illumination of the subject, as well as visibility at a distance, parameters used to judge competition entries and citation of the converters.
• Caffè Corsini (rotogravure gold award) - Pack made by Goglio Luigi Milano, where image and technology merge in a harmonious manner thanks to the use of an unusual shape and its strong visual impact (design and color also highlighting the product contained).
• Fette Biscottate Buitoni (rotogravure silver award) - Cellografica Gerosa was awarded for the strong product enhancement, the representative nature of the contents and memorable image. The color balance gives the packaging depth and impact.
• Single dose for oil and vinegar (rotogravure bronze award) - Sacchital won the award thanks to the optimization of surface and design, visibility at a distance, subject depth (photography) and its illumination. Innovatory in terms of shape and technical solution.
• Divella egg pasta (flexography gold award) - Polipack achieved an attractive packaging, with strong color effects, where the rationality of spaces stand out. The contents are highlighted by the graphic setting.
