Più veloce, più economica, più flessibile: la nuova avvolgitrice con film estensibile per prodotti ad asse orizzontali firmata Area supera una serie di limiti tradizionali e assicura nuove prestazioni. Ed è il punto di ripartenza di nuovi progetti ambiziosi, che mirano ad affermare i plus di questo sistema.

Oggi il mercato appare sufficientemente maturo per poter apprezzare i vantaggi, in primo luogo economici e ambientali, dei sistemi di avvolgimento con film estensibile, sia di carichi palettizzati sia di fardelli. Lo testimonia, per esempio, il fermento di studi e progetti riguardanti il multipack che - a vent'anni dagli esordi - sembra tornare di attualità. E, sicuramente, corrisponde all'esperienza diretta di Alessandro Cattaneo, fondatore e amministratore di Area Srl, società specializzata in soluzioni di avvolgimento e reggiatura, nata commerciale e ben presto sviluppatasi anche sul piano industriale: "A mio avviso, il momento è buono per presentare un nuovo e più sofisticato impianto automatico interamente sviluppato "in casa", per avvolgere con film estensibile prodotti ad asse orizzontale di grandi dimensioni". Anche perché, sottolinea l'imprenditore, questa macchina offre una serie di particolari innovativi che si traducono in altrettanti vantaggi funzionali, degni di una ribalta come quella offerta da Interpack, dove infatti verrà esposta in anteprima.
Economica e multifunzione
La nuova avvolgitrice Area costituisce una soluzione di contenimento-protezione che, utilizzando un solo materiale e un unico sistema di imballo, permette tanto il trasporto quanto la protezione del prodotto da polvere e umidità. La sua caratteristica più evidente consiste nel fatto che il bancale viene sostituito da un assai più economico e snello sistema di "stocchi" di legno, opportunamente posizionati in modo da consentire la movimentazione del carico tramite carrelli elevatori a forche. La coesione del carico e la realizzazione della relativa "paletta" resta dunque affidata al solo film estensibile, che in questo caso viene avvolto in senso orizzontale, adattandosi al tipo di prodotto per il quale è stata disegnata la macchina.
"Si tratta - precisa Cattaneo - di una bundling macchine a spirale (anche detta ad anello, Ndr.), progettata innanzitutto per la filiera del legno e per l'industria della lamiera, come alternativa ai sistemi di avvolgimento in termoretraibile che oggi vanno per la maggiore. Rispetto ad essi, presenta evidenti vantaggi di economia dovuti innanzitutto al drastico abbattimento dei consumi di energia e alla possibilità di usare film molto più sottili, che riducono la quantità di materiale e i relativi costi di smaltimento".
La macchina si compone idealmente di nastro d'ingresso, sistema per la copertura superiore e inferiore dei prodotti con film di PE, a bolle d'aria o altri materiali, inserimento automatico dello stocco di legno e avvolgimento con l'estensibile. Ma il progetto è spiccatamente modulare "in modo da ottenere di volta in volta la configurazione di carico desiderata: con o senza sostegni di legno, con o senza copertura superiore e inferiore, con gli opportuni sistemi di fissaggio dei prodotti durante l'avvolgimento (guide) ed eventuali altri componenti per la protezione del carico".
Oltre i limiti
Con queste caratteristiche, valutano in Area, e un anello da ben 2,5 m di diametro, l'avvolgitrice ben si presta a servire i settori di riferimento (innanzitutto quello mobiliero, ma anche l'industria siderurgica e altre affini per prodotto e problematiche logistiche). Anche perché i progettisti si sono impegnati a superare una serie di limiti "storici" di questo tipo di soluzione, a partire dalla ridotta velocità.
"Le macchine per termoretraibile sono lente ma lavorano senza interruzioni; il ciclo di avvolgimento con estensibile, invece, prevede soste al momento del taglio, della pinzatura e della ripartenza, che rallentano i tempi di output. Perciò abbiamo dedicato molta attenzione a questo fattore, e i risultati che abbiamo conseguito ci sembrano interessanti: se prima per avvolgere una porta ci volevano 90-100 secondi, ora riusciamo a trattarne due al minuto. Inoltre, inserendo alcune innovazioni che in parte abbiamo anche brevettato, siamo riusciti a "snellire" una serie di passaggi, semplificando le relative operazioni e velocizzando ulteriormente il ciclo. In più, abbiamo affrontato e risolto le problematiche relative alla gestione automatica di prodotti di forma e dimensione diversa, al rinforzo dei carichi delicati per evitare che si rovinino a contatto con le forche dei carrelli, e alla gestione dei film di protezione superiore e inferiore, e ora possiamo proporre una macchina degna di occupare un posto al "top" sul mercato".
L'elettronica gioca un ruolo importante, pur non prevedendo l'impiego di componenti dedicati: la gestione dei cicli è regolata da un PLC standard, l'interfaccia operatore adotta un display "normale" ma, quando la varietà dei prodotti da trattare è particolarmente ampia, il processore può essere interfacciato con un PC che aumenta flessibilità e velocità dei cambi lavoro
senza incidere troppo sui costi. Di semplice concezione e gestione anche il prestiro, di tipo meccanico con una percentuale del 100%.
Risposte e promesse
Questo modello costituisce l'alto di gamma delle avvolgitrici orizzontali Area, che comprende macchine automatiche e non. Le automatiche sono equipaggiate con anelli di diametro fra 35 cm - per prodotti come cornici, battiscopa, telai per porte, profili d'alluminio, perlinato, ecc. - e 250 cm per pannelli, truciolare ecc. che superano i 200 cm di larghezza e i 50 cm di altezza. Si tratta, in media, di impianti di notevole ingombro, integrati con adeguati sistemi di movimentazione del carico. La linea di macchine semiautomatiche a marchio Area, denominata R9, è invece ancora in fase di sviluppo e il primo modello sarà in mostra a Interpack 2002.
"Anche per rispondere alle esigenze dei distributori all'estero - spiega infatti Cattaneo - che devono poter contare su una gamma completa di soluzioni, abbiamo completato l'offerta con i modelli semiautomatici, con avvolgimento controllato manualmente e di dimensioni più contenute (il diametro dell'anello arriva al massimo a 150 cm)". Dal punto di vista strettamente progettuale, però, gli stimoli più vivaci e le sfide più appassionanti arrivano dalle automatiche, dove i tecnici Area sono impegnati a superare nuovi limiti.
"I principali obiettivi di miglioramento - afferma Cattaneo - riguardano la protezione degli spigoli, dove la difficoltà maggiore interessa l'inserimento automatico dei possibili rinforzi, l'avvolgimento "dolce" dei materiali più fragili (per il quale stiamo testando dei sistemi alternativi di prestiro motorizzato) e la protezione superiore del carico, per cui stiamo selezionando diverse tipologie di materiale anticondensa, anticorrosione, ecc.".
Insomma, se da un lato la nuova macchina della Area costituisce un bel punto d'arrivo a gratificare gli sforzi del team di Ricerca & Sviluppo, dall'altro costituisce un bel punto di partenza.
Anche perché Cattaneo, di sovente, torna a fare uno strano sogno in cui l'industria del mobile, in tutto il mondo, è passata a utilizzare come materiale da imballo solo il film estensibile. E i sogni, si sa, son desideri; a volte si avverano.

Stretch film: starting from 3
Faster, more economical, more flexible: the new wrapping machine with stretch film for horizontal axis products by Area overcomes a series of traditional limits and guarantees improved performance. And this makes up another fresh point of departure for new ambitious projects which aim to assert the advantages of this system.

Today the market appears sufficiently mature to be able to appreciate the aboveall economic and environmental advantages of stretch wrapping systems of both palletised loads and bundles. The proof is, for example, the ferment of studies and projects regarding the multipack which - twenty years after its debut - seems to be back in the news. And it certainly corresponds to the direct experience of Alessandro Cattaneo, founder and owner of Area Ltd., a company specialised in packaging and strapping, which started off as a purely commercial venture but soon developed into an industry: "In my opinion, it is a good moment to present a new and more sophisticated automatic plant developed entirely “in house” for wrapping largescale horizontal axis products with stretchfilm". Another reason being, the entrepreneur emphasises, that this machine offers a series of particular innovations which translate into just as many functional advantages, worthy of the limelight it enjoyed at the Interpack sneak preview.
Economical and multifunctional
The new Area wrapping machine both secures and protects. Using just one type of material and wrapping system, it allows the product to be both transported and safeguarded from dust and damp. Its most evident characteristic consists in the fact that the pallet is replaced by a rather more economical and streamlined system of wooden “stacks” opportunely placed in such a way as to allow the handling of the load by means of fork lift trucks. The cohesion of the load and the production of the relative “sheet” is therefore entrusted to the stretch film, which in this case is wrapped horizontally, adapting to the type of elongated product for which the machine has been designed.
"What we are talking about - Cattaneo specifies - Is a spiral bundling machine (also called ring, Ed.) designed aboveall for wood dies and for the sheet metal industry, as an alternative to the heatshrink wrapping systems which are principally used today. Compared to these it presents obvious economic advantages due above all to the drastic reduction of energy consumption and the possibility to use much thinner film which reduces the quantity of the material and the relative costs of disposal".
The machine is ideally composed of the infeed belt, a system for the top and bottom covering of products with PE film or other materials, automatic insertion of the wooden stack and wrapping with the stretchfilm. But the project is markedly modular "in such a way as to obtain each time the configuration of the desired load: with or without the wooden support, with or without the top and bottom covering, with appropriate systems for fixing the products while they are being wrapped (guide) and other eventual components for the protection of the load".
Over the limits
Area calculates that with these characteristics and a ring of 2.5 m in diameter, the wrapping machine is well suited to serving the sectors of reference (above all the furniture sector, but also the iron and steel industry and other similar products and questions of logistics). This is also because the designers have concentrated on overcoming a series of time-old limits to this type of solution, beginning with its reduced speed.
"Heatshrink wrapping machines are slow but work uninterruptedly. The cycle of wrapping with stretch film on the other hand, entails pauses at the cutting, stapling and restarting stage which slow down the output times. For this reason we have dedicated a great deal of attention to this factor and we feel the results we have obtained are interesting: if once it took 90-100 seconds to wrap a door we can now do two a minute. Moreover, adding some innovations which we have also in part patented, we have managed to “streamline” a series of steps, simplifying the relative operations and speeding up the cycle even further. Furthermore, we have tackled and solved problems linked to the automatic management of products of different shapes and sizes, reinforcing delicate loads to avoid their being ruined on contact with the forks of the trucks, and the handling of the top and bottom film of protection, and we can now propose a machine which is worthy of occupying a top market position".
Electronics plays an important part, though it does not require the use of specific components: the handling of the cycles is regulated by a standard PLC, the operating interface adopts a “normal” display but, when the variety of products to be treated is particularly broad, the processor can be interfaced with a PC that increases flexibility and the speed of program switches without bearing down too much upon costs.
The pre-stretch is also simply conceived and handled; it is mechanical with a rate of 100%.
Answers and Promises
This model makes up the top end of the range of Area horizontal wrapping machines which includes both automatic and non-automatic machines. The automatic machines are equipped with rings of a diameter between 35 cm - for products such as picture frames, skirting boards, door frames, aluminium profiles, matchboarding etc. - and 250 cm for panels, chipboard etc. which exceed 200 cm in width and 50 cm in height. These are remarkably cumbersome plants, integrated with adequate systems for moving loads. The line of semi-automatic machines trademarked Area and denominated R9, is instead still in a development phase and the first model will be exhibited at Interpack 2002.
"To respond to the needs of foreign distributors - Cattaneo in fact explains - which must be able to count on a complete range of solutions, we have completed the offer with semi-automatic models, with manually controlled wrapping systems which are smaller (the diameter of the ring is at most 150 cm)".
From a strictly design point of view however the most lively stimuli and the most exciting challenges come from the automatic machines where the Area technicians are busy setting new limits.
"The main goals for improvement" says Cattaneo, "concern the protection of corners, where the major difficulty concerns the automatic addition of possible reinforcements, the “soft” wrapping of more fragile materials (for which we are testing alternative systems to motorised pre-stretch) and the protection of the top of loads, for which we are selecting different kinds of sweat-proof, anticorrosion materials etc.".
All in all, if on one hand Area’s new machine is a good point of arrival, which gratifies the efforts of the Research & Development team, on the other hand it is also a good point of departure.
Cattaneo often has a strange dream in which the furniture industry all over the world has switched to using only stretch film for packaging. And dreams, we all know, are wishes; sometimes they come true.
