| | Efficiency, flexibility, co-operation FlexLink has co-operated with Eli Lilly Italia in tailoring three powdered antibiotic bottle production lines to the Italian plant structure, as well as in finding a solution for handling problems, generated by the availability of space. During 1999 the multinational Eli Lilly & Co. Group concentrated world-wide production of powdered antibiotics for children (cephalosporin) in the Italian plant of its associated company Eli Lilly Italia in Sesto Fiorentino (Florence), transferring some existing lines from its Puerto Rico plant to Italy. The main problem here was how to adapt the existing structures in the factory in Tuscany to meet the new production needs. Thanks to great team effort, involving the managers from the pharmaceutical group and FlexLink, the optimal handling solution was found, capable of protecting the integrity of the products and the occupational health and safety parameters. As Dr. Diana Varela, consultant of Eli Lilly Puerto Rico on transfer in Italy to oversee the project, explains: «After selecting the Italian plant as the main platform for the production of powdered antibiotics for children, we had to install three complete lines for filling and packaging antibiotics bottles in Italy. This process involves positioning and cleaning the bottles, followed by the bottling and sealing stages in sterile rooms. On leaving the sterile room, the bottles have to pass through a shaking machine and are then transferred to the shrink/stretch wrapper and finally the palletizer». The wedge system and closed chain conveyors «To take into account the new plant lay-out - explains Cristina Garzelli, application manager pharmaceutical segment in FlexLink Systems - we had to re-configure the first two lines, in order to create a series of passages for the operators inside the sterile filling rooms. So we decided to install an XL wedge elevator without adjustment, with flexible rubber cleats, by elevating the bottles after filling. We moreover decided to utilise the climb-down phase of the bottles to create the required feeding buffers. XL alpine systems have thus been used, the first two lines have been fitted with those from Puerto Rico tailored to the existing lines». «The third line did not have the same problem of operator passages, but, like the others, had to be supplied with a feeding buffer before the shaking machine - adds Mrs. Varela -and in this case we could not utilise the material coming from Puerto Rico. FlexLink has therefore proposed and delivered a spiral XL alpine buffer, which elevates the bottles coming from the sterile room and, always in buffer, drops them towards the shaking machine». Again, a possible problem had to be foreseen and avoided in the third line, given that the bottles are not packaged in boxes but shrink wrapped and so, during the transfer from the shrink-wrapping machine to the palletizer, theres a risk that the wrapping film could be pinched off by the chain links. This is why FlexLink proposed to Eli Lilly its new XB conveyor with 175 mm wide chain, which features overlapping links that stay closed even in bends (this minimises the risk of jamming or tearing the shrink-wrapping film). «The transportation test results, carried out in the FlexLink workshop in Turin on the XB conveyor, where the sample bottles coming directly from Puerto Rico - concludes Garzelli - have fully satisfied Eli Lillys expectations and so the delivery was given the go-ahead». Adaptable and easy to assemble The flexibility of the design and technology offered by FlexLink has been especially appreciated, particularly with the arrival of the three lines from Puerto Rico. Mr. Nucciotti, maintenance manager of the Eli Lilly plant in Sesto Fiorentino comments: «We had to re-configure the lines with the integration of components coming from America. FlexLinks versatility allowed us to redesign the conveyor lay-outs without big problems and at the same time solve new problems as these arose. We always mount FlexLink components ourselves, and without any hassle thanks to their extremely easy assembling. FlexLink also offer us all the technical support needed and always manage to meet our requirements when weve also had to ask for very short delivery terms». |
