Secondo il CEPI - Confederazione Europea delle Industrie Cartarie - il riciclo della carta è cresciuto, negli anni ‘90, del 65%. Nel ‘99 sono state utilizzate oltre 38 milioni di t di carta riciclata, con un incremento del 4,2% rispetto all’anno precedente. Ma non solo: la media del tasso di raccolta in Europa occidentale ha superato il tetto del 50% nel 1999, e ha raggiunto il 51,6% del consumo di carte e cartoni. È importante inoltre notare come il tasso di riciclo, ovvero il rapporto tra utilizzo di carta riciclata e consumo totale di carte e cartoni, abbia raggiunto nel corso del 1999 il 48,7%. Un risultato reso possibile grazie anche alla cooperazione fra i patner della filiera cartaria, dai raccoglitori, ai produttori, ai distributori. Nonostante tutti gli sforzi compiuti e da compiere, però - sottolinea il CEPI - una raccolta globale e un tasso di recupero del 100% non è ipotizzabile: un quinto del totale di carte e cartoni utilizzati (carta per sigarette, carta igienica, carta da parati, ecc.) non è infatti recuperabile.

According to the CEPI - European Confederation of Paper Industries - paper recycling has increased in the nineties by 65%. In ‘99 over 38 million tons of recycled paper was used, with an increase of 4.2% compared to the previous year. But not only that: the average collection rate in western Europe has gone through the ceiling of 50% achieved in 1999, and has reached 51.6% of consumption of paper and cardboard.
It is also important to note that the recycling rate, or that is that ratio between use of recycled paper and total consumption of paper and cardboard hit 48.7% during 1999. A result made possible also thanks to the cooperaton between the partners of the paper segment, from the collectors to producers to e distributors. Despite all the efforts made and that have still to be made, as the European Confederation of Paper Industries underlines, an overall collection and a recovery rate of 100% is not feasible: a fifth of the total of paper and cardboard used (cigarette paper, toilet paper, wallpaper, etc.) is unrecoverable.
