| | Redesigning the pallet in 2000 Depending on the outlet market and the needs of individual customers, even a simple product such as the pallet can -and must - change its characteristics and performance. Innovation according to Nordcontenitori, based on modularity and the use of recycled materials. What form can a pallet take? Firstly, made not just of wood, but also of plastic (and recycled at that). Then modular, hygienic, standard and even round. So says Nordcontenitori, whos an expert in pallets: this Bergamo-based company - that also produces a broad range of industrial plastic containers and pallet-boxes, coverings and grill bases, baskets of various types and functions, bottle-carriers, platforms and many more besides - has built a good part of its fortune on pallets. So much so that in 99 it even won a Packaging Oscar thanks to an original reusable pallet called the Boomerang, which as a bonus return has given it even more renown. Standard but special Nordcontenitoris development policy is based on an original and dynamic vision of the product and market, which in turn - explains Edoardo Bertoli of the firms top management - is based on a simple fundamental assumption: no matter what the sector, rational logistics need integrated elements that allow one to exploit surfaces and volumes to the full, while at the same time making handling operations easier. Modularity is, therefore, an essential characteristic everywhere to avoid slowdowns and to make the quality and quantity of the products to be handled (whether loose or packed) that much easier. Having said this, each sector obviously has its own special requirements, even if only in terms of hygiene and safety - particularly so in the food and pharmaceutical industries - requiring subsequent translation of the main principles above. «Thus was born the Boomerang, - continues Edoardo Bertoli - with the intention of satisfying the legal requirements concerning HACCP, occupational health and safety standards and, last but not least, the disposal of waste. For this reason, the Boomerang is strong and can be reused several times, is lightweight (its also suitable for shipping by air) and has rounded corners. But most of all, its easy to clean thanks to its smooth surface, without any grooves or steps, and special non-absorbent, mould-proof finish. Moreover, it can also be made from recycled material». The Boomerang is an excellent example of cooperation between firms; in fact its made using a technology developed by Devi that combines thermoforming in the mould of a film of varying thickness to suit specific needs, followed by the injection of foamed material of the required density. «Finally - adds Bertoli - it can also be personalized, colored and silk-printed». Modular and recycled The Boomerang isnt the only case of product innovation in response to market demand. Another symbolic case is the modular pallet, developed adopting the principle its not the product that has to adapt to the pallet but the other way around. «There are cases where a product has measurements that arent compatible with standard pallets, thus requiring ad hoc solutions », comments Bertoli. «In order to produce these simply and without having to bear excessive costs, weve created a pallet that can be built to measure by combining extruded plastic bars of various lengths to suit the product. This means that we avoid having to create a special mould each time, which costs and slows down production, while at the same time obtaining a product with adequate strength and hygiene. In fact, its made from recycled PET coming from the collection of waste mineral water bottles». Further, and quite substantial, ideas for research and business opportunities come from the gradual expansion of the hire of pallets, which in other nations is rapidly catching on as a cost-effective alternative to purchasing, not to mention from nations - and here Australias in the lead - where the circulation of wooden pallets is being regulated, limiting these to suitably treated products in compliance with precise standards. «Both these cases let us fully enhance the value of plastic pallets, which, despite costing twice as much as wooden pallets initially, make for considerable savings in management in certain contexts», stresses Bertoli. «Furthermore, they provide new problems and stimuli for development, which were not slow to take up. On average, we come up with three new products every year, developed in cooperation with our customers to meet specific needs. And when these products arent to be supplied on an exclusive basis, but can open up new market outlets for us, were willing to share with the customer the initial investment costs». Go forth and multiply Nordcontenitori owes its development - marked by constant growth over twenty years of business - mainly to its inventive spirit, i.e., the ability to grasp market needs in time and to turn these into products and services. «Thus - sums up Bertoli - in addition to identifying and supplying the right product for each customer (standard or special, whatever it might be), were always committed to guaranteeing both the agreed quality levels and delivery times. Whats more, weve never faced the competition by selling the price, because its our conviction and experience that the market rewards those who progress with seriousness and coherence along their chosen path, in full respect of the laws and standards. Within this framework theres still plenty of scope to play the many ace cards of the trade». The consolidated success (and future) of this Bergamo-based company is also due to its willingness to seize the opportunities offered by the new extended dimensions of the market, starting with the Single Market in Europe. «Were capable of serving all goods sectors, with the sole exception of the heavy metal-working sector, in all areas. For this reason, and to avoid long shipments of bulky products with a relatively low unit price, weve started to decentralize our production, starting with Greece where weve begun a three-year plan working with a local operator. This is a route we intend to continue with, helped by the fact that when we have the Euro, itll be far simpler to calculate and compare the different opportunities that the market may offer». | | Please dont call them packaging «Were converters of plastics [Ed.: HDPE, PP, linear PE, recycled PET] specialized in the production of crates and pallets that - I must stress - arent mere packaging, but long-lasting work tools». Edoardo Bertoli takes great pain in finding a better definition for the products of his company («we dont make vegetable crates: those are what you can call packaging!»). With two factories, in Chignolo and Medolago, another unit is production unit in Greece and a network of trusted contractors, producing the moulds and part of the products of this Bergamo-based firm, Nordcontenitori has consolidated its position on the international market over the years and, with a staff of 50 or so, can boast an overall annual turnover 18 billion Lire, with 30% coming from overseas. Renowned for the original development of its product range, showing how its possible to create value - in use and aesthetics - even in the field of commodities, Nordcontenitori has a commercial organisation that doesnt include the figure of agent («we do everything directly from our HQ») and exploits the possibilities offered by todays new telematic instruments to the full. | | | |
