Come?

Stesso stampo, impatto diverso

Standard, but also luxury
In the world of cosmetics, the culture of Quality is catching on at all levels of the market and creates points of contact between the selective, luxury channel and the mass market. Thus the divisions between standard and special are also becoming weaker, as Laffon shows, which, with its brand-new stick, has reached several goals.

An innovative, simple and easy to use packaging, that retains its special properties over time. And then, it’s cheap, compatible with the different formulations, can be refilled by all technologies currently in use. What’s more - last, but not least - it’s really easy to personalise in a non structural way. Very briefly, these are the features of the new foundation stick developed by Laffon for the most beautiful of high cosmetics and mass market brands, and it’s already set to become a classic (in the same way as the lipstick did). A real goose that lays the golden eggs - in just two years it’s increased the company’s turnover by about 40% - which has been warmly received by consumers as the new pack for the new generation of foundations, that’s natural to handle.
Its features and story are symbolic of how the two extremes (“high” and “low”) in the range of containers for cosmetics are gradually moving closer together. How? Thanks to the evolution of the technology, the acceptance of a sense of the “right” price (i.e., to suit the object) even for luxury products, and the spread of a culture of Quality that cannot forgive an absence of functionality, effectiveness and endurance in a product, even in the most commonplace of “commodities”.

Simplicity and versatility
A packaging producer must be “cross-eyed”: with one eye looking at consumer desires and the other at the needs of his customer. Thus, Laffon hit the target full on in having been able to interpret correctly both the former («because no-one has the strength to impose a product on the market», stresses Sergio Crosta, managing director of Laffon) and the latter, by developing a truly versatile packaging solution.
The heart of the idea is the rationalised design stage, making it possible to make some substantial economies of scale, producing a container that’s “always the same”, and yet at the same time it’s always different by playing around with the surface treatment. The first version - from which the later variations in diameter and height are all derived - consists in an 18 mm cylindrical plastic stick with hermetic seal for foundation (though it’s now also being used for other beauty products), proposed as a hermetic alternative to the tube and the more classic “box”.
In fact, right from the start the design takes into account the latest developments in formulation, resulting in ever more sophisticated cosmetics, with volatile components that need protecting with a suitable seal. During the industrialising stage, this stick can be produced in either PP or ABS, to guarantee chemical/physical compatibility between the pack and the cosmetic on the one hand and the ability of the pack to conserve the contents on the other. More precisely, the choice of plastic is greatly influenced by the properties of the cosmetic product in question (in terms of compatibility, barrier effect and hermetic seal), but also by the actual filling method used. What’s more: the flexibility of the project makes this packaging potentially “open” to future variations in the formulas.

The same mould, a different impact
The Laffon stick is even more flexible in that it lets the cosmetics producer use all filling technologies (top, bottom or picking), depending on the speed of the lines, the size and complexity of the lot... But, above all else, it’s so versatile that it can also be personalised, even radically, and so even be accepted with satisfaction by the beauty houses that serve the mass class market (Revlon, Yves Rocher ...) as well as the best known top-notch brands (it is used by Christian Dior, Guerlain, Givenchy, Clinique, Estée Lauder ...). «This stick - explains Crosta briefly - radically changes its look and impact as the colors, decoration and surface finish change, demonstrating, among other things, just how important a contribution decoration makes in deciding the class of a product. Starting with our know-how in the processing of plastics, we’ve developed the techniques needed for hot moulding, silk-screen printing and painting or metalizing in a vacuum, and we’re now considering extending the range of processing services even further. Here we must stress that this personalising involves all stages in production and organisation, following strict “cahier de charge” from our customers and giving shape to those “details” that make all the difference, even in cost, naturally». The fact, however, that major changes to the moulds are not required, apart from some «easily» manageable personalising - such as engraving the trademark or altering a top - means that the concept of economy of scale is given due consideration. And, thanks to its proper line organisation, Laffon can today produce about 4 million pieces/year at competitive rates.

Winning liaison with formulators
Laffon has developed the stick in cooperation with one of the most important formulators in Italy («and thus in Europe, indeed in the world», comments Crosta), as is its custom. «Close contacts with firms such as Intercos, Gamma Croma and Tecnocosmesi - explains the manager - are favoured by contiguity and start from two basic presuppositions: that no formulation can exist without a container that guarantees its properties will be preserved over time and that the ability of the formulators in interpreting (and stimulating) the market helps the packaging producer to understand consumer needs». The new stick has not only been designed, but also tried out, revised and tested on the partner’s filling lines, in a process lasting a year and a half. This work, coordinated by Laffon’s Quality Department, has produced a further result, whose importance has been judged to be vital: a heap of tests, documented in a series of technical dossiers that accompany the container, covering every aspect worthy of note (tightness, life and functionality). «As a result - points out Crosta - we provide the customer with an important service, which not only saves him effort and money, but above all lets him minimise the time needed to launch the product in the new container. Also because, together with our partner, we can even supply him with the containers already filled, should he so wish». Thus, the 18 mm stick has been followed by the 22 and 8 mm (currently used for eye-shadows) and, last but not least, the 038, coming in a variety of heights and finishes. The company is now working on the identification of new successful applications for the stick, as well as developing ad hoc packs for those customers requiring special solutions (these represent about 20-25% of Laffon’s activity) and - of course - new projects for standard lines. «Because the shift in the function of make up, from mere decoration to a treatment for well-being, is opening up new horizons, and we want to keep our special standing as innovators, catering for the different market bands in time».

Laffon: l’altra faccia dell’utopia

Laffon: the other face of utopia
In ancient Greece, the term utopia meant “a place that doesn’t exist”. It’s up to each of us to decide whether it will never exist - the unattainable by definition, closer to a fairy-tale than to a practical desire - or that today it doesn’t, but tomorrow, who knows... For the founder of Laffon, Sergio Crosta, utopia is obviously an ideal to work towards, a challenge to be faced with sound projects and with the awareness that «only by aiming high and putting our all into it can we expect to get good results». A sort of “be realistic, you’re asking for the impossible” which led him in ‘82 to abandon his job as an inventive technician to set up in business himself producing plastic containers for the cosmetics sector. And so he founded Laffon, with a partner from a different country and culture (Germany) and with different professional training (designer), but with the awareness that «to progress, there’s need of a designer left free to create new forms without any prior restrictions, and a technician capable of interpreting the ideas and concepts to give substance to projects with the potential for industrial production». Together (even if a few years later the German partner left the business), the two of them built up a business that today employs 170, has an annual turnover of roughly 55 billion Lira (the estimates for 2000 are between 52 and 57 billion, some 35-40% up on the ‘99 figure) and which, since ‘89, has been part of the multinational universe of Techpack. Crosta continues to direct the company, managing a staff of professionals and managers who, like him, believe in the fertile mix of imagination and technical competence and who have come together through sharing the common principles of Quality. This way, this Lombard company has made a name for itself as one of the most creative companies in the Group (each year it comes up with a large number of new projects), and as “the” producer of standard products par excellence in the Group, even though some 20-25% of the projects are developed to customer order and put into production on an exclusive basis. And it’s this very greyness of the border between standard and special that provides the setting for the story of the “twenty billion Lira stick”.
