“The Earth has a sound for those who know how to listen to it” (Shakespeare) and paper can reproduce it. This was passionately and imaginatively demonstrated by Cartiere di Cordenons in an original promotional undertaking that also proved a challenge to the limit as well as a fun event. L’udito [Hearing] is the first in a series of shows and publications dedicated to the “5 senses”.
Paper sounds

Instruments as old as the world emit forgotten sounds, and the ballerina’s body vibrates in unison while the actress calls out: Silence, listen! The walls of a classical building - a temple, or theatre - color prints on paper visually representing sound archetypes of great civilisations (German “Lied” is found next to Italian voices in a station). These are multiplied in specially printed copies, demonstrating how the art of printing can transform an original into numerous other originals.
This context, created by Cartiere di Cordenons working with a group of artists, “creatives” and craftspeople, has been designed to offer an appreciation of the power of paper that - when treated with the correct technique - can take form, give a voice and speak to all the senses. The idea became a project divided into various phases under the title “5 senses” (although there is space for an additional sixth sense). Painters and illustrators from countries all around the world were invited to create images along this theme, the results of which have gone to form a traveling exhibition. The images were offset printed, as is the book which serves as a catalogue, and then reproduced on precious supports of the paper company, so that they actually become reinterpretations of themselves.
The first stage of the project was dedicated to hearing and developed around a precise, yet open “brief”: «transform the sound that most represents your country into an illustration: a piece of music, the sound of the sea or the wind, the crackling of dry leaves in the forest or a collection of many noises and melodies that embody the essence of the country where you live». And so we have the bull with a drum from the Argentine Zeolite displayed next to the raging bull from the Spaniard, El Gato, diluting the irreverent effect and mingling it with more “delicate” representations, such another animal reference as in the image of Australian nature by Lancashire, or the Magrittian and airy image of the English horn provided by Cornner. The images have led to a traveling performance, where painting, music, dance and theatre reflect the works and their “multiples”. A thermographic relief printing method used for this initial experiment offers an imposing effect. The three-dimensional effect can be applied to the whole or to a section of the image, and is achieved by covering the areas still damp with ink with a special thermographic powder (glossy, matt, transparent or colored), which then swells with the heat. Cartiere di Cordenons and Grafiche Valdarno have created other interesting effects by combining other visible particles, e.g. sand or glass, with the dust producing very unusual visual and tactile effects. Seeing is believing: the catalogue “L’udito” [hearing], with texts in eight languages, offers a fascinating and unprecedented account of art and craft, while also providing a catalogue of Cordenon’s Dalì, Stardream, Modigliani, Coriandoli, Flora and Chagall paper range.

Nivea drops

Creator of the change, the packaging design and brand identity agency Dragon Rouge have to fulfil a demanding brief: win an important place Nivea’s Personal Care line on the given market; enhance the communication of the specific nature of each product without betraying identity and brand values; identify Nivea with personal care and modern living. The container, featuring a new “soft” shape - result of structural and graphic restyling - aspires to communicating greater vitality and sensuality alongside the reassuring “technical” and performance values. The sateened and pearlescent materials used in the creation of the top contrast with the deep blue of the oval dispenser, that ensures max precision and safety in distributing the product, aboveall the gel (the flacon can be stood upside-down without problems of stability, meaning all the contents can be used up). The products have a new formula (Aquasoft), highlighted in the label, that bears drops of water in various colors. The brand has also been updated, now set above a wave in various soft hues, set against a traditional blue background, giving an even greater impression of joi de vivre and naturalness.

Creatività a incastro

Marketing interconnecting creativity
The delightful “Le Bureau des esprits” art gallery in Milan hosted the “Plastiline Design Award” (international design competition for young planners, architects and designers) ceremony, on September 7 this year. The competition was set-up by the Bologna company Skat, which specialises in the conversion of polypropylene into applications for the industrial and company promotional market.
Entries were received from all over the world, and were subdivided into three main themes: objects for the office and for school, furnishing accessories, and objects for communal spaces. The principal objectives included experimentation and creation of new prototypes that are high in quality and aesthetic appeal, in an effort to provide examples of future trends in design and suggest new uses for the colored sheet plastic material, which is highly valued for its polyedric nature, transparency, strain resistance and ecocompatibility. Participants were posed with only one constraint - which was in fact the crux of the project - i.e., the study of interconnecting solutions that had to be devised without the use of glues.
The jury was made up of Aldo Colonetti (Scientific Director of the Istituto Europeo di Design and Editor of the journal Ottagono), Frida Doveil (Designer, Domus Academy), Paolo Favaretto (Designer), Giuseppe Tripodi (PlastiLine) and Giorgio Stoppino (Designer). These experts assessed the 71 prototypes entered and awarded those deemed most expressive in terms of innovation and design. The event in itself provided an interesting opportunity and occasion for reflection for both designers and architects, and also offered new possibilities for using sheet PP, ultimately proving the possibilities for further creative applications. The competition is to be a biannual event and promotion of the next edition will coincide with the Furniture Fair in Milan.

La mostra ospiterà i lavori di Renata Boero, Joseph Beuys, Enzo Cucchi, Gino De Dominicis, Jeff Gauntt, Marco Cingolani, Francesco De Grandi, Daniele Galliano, Lorenzo Gatti, Fathi Hassan, Martin Larralde, Abraham La Calle, Franco Angeloni, Giovanni Manfredini, Andrea Marescalchi, Andrea Martinelli, Marina Nunez, Angelina Nasso, Alessandro Pessoli, Mimmo Paladino, Gianluca Sgherri, Luca Pancrazzi, Claudio Parmiggiani, Martha Sforni, Beatrice Pasquali, Michele Chiossi, Gilberto Zorio.

Machine and impulse
The event that is to open 4 November next in the 18th - century Collegio Cairoli Building in the University of Pavia has nothing to do with a revival of Isidore-Lucien Ducasse count of Lautréamont and his unlikely surreal devices. The event titled “Per Alleviare Insopportabili Impulsi” (To Alleviate Unbearable Impulses) - borrowed from the story by Nathan Englander – presents the work of about thirty international artists that practise or have practised drawing as an independent activity, within the framework of their entire artistic production. The artists are different, both in their quest and personal output, but all share drawing dexterity, intended as a “revealing, cognitive, liberating, continual, and autonomous” activity. The following artists will be displaying their work in the exhibition: Renata Boero, Joseph Beuys, Enzo Cucchi, Gino De Dominicis, Jeff Gauntt, Marco Cingolani, Francesco De Grandi, Daniele Galliano, Lorenzo Gatti, Fathi Hassan, Martin Larralde, Abraham La Calle, Franco Angeloni, Giovanni Manfredini, Andrea Marescalchi, Andrea Martinelli, Marina Nunez, Angelina Nasso, Alessandro Pessoli, Mimmo Paladino, Gianluca Sgherri, Luca Pancrazzi, Claudio Parmiggiani, Martha Sforni, Beatrice Pasquali, Michele Chiossi, Gilberto Zorio.
The exhibition will also display an Etipack labeling machine, the presence of which, removed from the productive and functional context for which it was created, will act as testimony to this faculty of man. Such “expressions”, the drawing and the machine, the frail nature of drawing and the earthly presence of the machine form an event based on a common “design activity”, of “creating”, which transcends the machine’s contingent utilitarian character or the non-utility of drawing, inasmuch as they draw on the most hidden of man’s subjective faculties. This project also marks a development and continuation of another Being Beauteous (at Spazio Strenesse, Milan and Trevi Flash Art Museum, 1996), on an enquiry into the sign. The exhibition is supported by a writing by Pietro Finelli as well as a short text by Fabrizio Desideri, renowned academic and expert as well as curator of Walter Benjamin’s works in Italy. (directed by Pietro Finelli).

Imballaggio in cifre

Packaging in figures
The Istituto Italiano Imballaggio has published “Imballaggio in cifre” (Packaging in figures) again this year, providing a collection of statistical-economic data from the packaging industry during 1999. The inclusion of a new, in-depth study chapter: “Historical and correlation series”, provides an analysis of production and consumption trends of packaging materials in the decade from 1988 to 1999, together with comparisons between trends in each production area and its most important related industrial sector or the main user division. The publication serves as a useful instrument for specific studies and information gathering from the Institute’s data bank, providing details such as key features, developing trends in the most dynamic areas, market share of the different types of packaging in use, and projections based on a three-year trend for packaging in each reference sector. The publication costs 300,000 Lire + VAT, and an electronic version is also available.
