The possible metamorphosis
New forms of communication, new values, new visibility for packaging. Yet also the need to rethink information and tighter management of the same: some suggestions on the subject.

To mark the presentation of two the books “Product Presentation - Packaging: Identity and Consumption” (by visual designer Valeria Bucchetti) and “Packaging - Object and communication” (by the linguist and semiologist Mauro Ferraresi), the publisher Franco Angeli called together a group of designers and image theorists to discuss the possible metamorphosis of packaging. The over-size packs created by artist Antonio de Pascale gave for an intriguing and provocative setting, whereby the artist highlighted the transformation of packaging from simple protective wrapping to becoming a communicative goods item, an instrument that is able to narrate to and interact with the end user-consumer.
Giovanni Baule, Ugo Volli, Francesco Marsciani, Gianpaolo Fabris and of course the two authors provided some suggestions for a more comprehensive reflection on product visibility and the different ways of “staging” the product.

When communication is utmost
Over the years the form-function relationship of packaging design has been overtaken by development of its communicative part, that is the product’s symbolic and evocative values seen as a whole.
The entire design process, after the Bauhaus doctrine, considered the fusion of functional and aesthetic aspects as central; it was only in a later period that people developed the concept of the “representative function”, i.e. a functional nature of the product that also embodies a communicative capacity.
Hence, the whole idea of packaging that began as a means to protect and wrap a product (consider the first grease-proof paper used to wrap goods sold loosely), has developed along with the consumer society and the growth of distribution systems. It has now become an object in its own right that protects while also relating the story of another object (the product). In other words: the object is the condition that governs an ongoing discourse, as Mauro Ferraresi maintains.
According to Bucchetti, it is the object’s “communicative aura” that prevails, while form and performance are almost considered a question of due course, standardised and devoid of distinction. This means that goods rely on visibility in order to define their own intimate nature. To attain this, a selection of graphic signs, lettering, colours and surface treatment render the packaging recognisable as such, and this independent from its contents, while also representing possible stimuli for the consumer to choose and purchase.

Turning goods into theatrical stars
Thus visibility leads to unrestrained competition, turning goods into showbiz stars by using materials and “special effects”, wherein designers become display experts and true image directors.
It is nevertheless true that surface attributes also concur with the overall quality of the product, «representing - Bucchetti confirms - a further voice with which to expand the communicative potential, which is also used to tell of or allude to the contents and to build an identity». Furthermore, the designer also notes the need to consider the increasingly shorter duration of goods, or rather the lesser time the goods stay in the arena of consumption. Hence, the “power of seduction” in packaging and the strategies to attract consumers become fundamental if one is to maintain a high demand for the product.

Nostalgia for contents
This need for image, which must achieve success in a brief period and which must effectively demonstrate the extent of renewal, carries a risk: a loss of meaning that undermines the very basis of its design. Valeria Bucchetti reiterates the fact that packaging is a “device that has jammed”, a device that has built up its potential ever since packaging started appearing on the shelves of broadscale distribution; something that still works although it may have reached the height of its expressive capacity in its leaning towards an excessive craving for attention at the moment of display. There is a marked rift between design, graphics and structural components, which gives rise to the need to rethink the capacity to communicate the true essence of the product, finding the right balance between the purely aesthetic and surface aspects.
The issue becomes more complicated if we consider the “parallel life” of packaging under the new sales channels. Here we mean e-commerce, where the goods are “virtual” and communication is basically dependant upon visual messages.
Giovanni Baule gave an interesting talk on this subject: «Packaging is part of short communication, it therefore belongs to that category of devices that “tell the story”, as do posters, book covers and television jingles. Extremely interesting languages are being developed in these areas, thanks to the use of experimental typography, computer graphics or linguistic experiments. At this point the so-called “flow aesthetics” suggest that packaging is actually interpreted as a sequence on the shelf, and the consumer sees and feels this process. There is no shortage of outstanding examples: many years before the Campari advertisement, Bruno Munari proposed that “flow graphics” can and must account for objects that are perceived in a shifting range of vision».
Another response to the “nostalgia for contents” can be seen in the new way of approaching the communicative function from a service and information perspective.
If on one hand the instructions constitute a visible form of product performance, on the other the instructions stand as an interface relating the product to its user, putting the latter in a position to use the same.
The semiologist Francesco Marsciani also underlined the aspects of “pack as an interface”, first and foremost wondering as to why the wrapping is becoming evermore separate from the contents while also drawing attention to the fact that the packaging must embody a series of advanced technological functions (intelligent chips, high-service dispensers...) to foster interaction with the user. The analysis carried out by Ferraresi on the iMac product was apt and to-the-point, offering an explicative example of this trend. The iMac body - transparent packaging reduced to a minimum - integrates and acts with the technological heart of the computer, fearlessly revealing its mysteries.

A device for knowing and doing
If we consider objects as active agents with which we can interact and not as mere physical entities, the changing development of packaging in this direction opens up new possibilities. Ugo Volli maintains that in the near future we will be able to dialogue with the “physical and material hyper-pack” in a way that is not only functional but also affective. «And so, at this point the staging becomes self-staging, it is no longer an object but a subject that accompanies us. Even for packaging “virtual” is becoming more and more associated with the concept of “virtus”, intended as ability to act».

Outlook
Therefore packaging is no longer a given certainty, but it is slowly (and within the limits of possibility) taking on the features of an object prone to being questioned, to being constructed, reconstructed and modified according to flow aesthetics, but also to a service and information perspective.
New methods of translating a service content correlated to the product, new opportunities to interact with the purchaser, bestow the package with an added technical and communicative value, which is also open to possible changes.
Today more than ever it is necessary to work to restate these potentials of packaging that - going back to a concept expressed by Bucchetti - «must be an object closely integrated with the product and not just a simple sales accessory which to be jettisoned at the moment of purchase or discarded as waste»; this integrated object is thus capable of playing an active role in interacting with the consumer.
