Quanto all’alimentare...

Renewal with verve
Lameplast strengthens its production capacity and services for third parties - at the same time developing its associate company COC - and announces it has devised new monodose packs for the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industry. Projects and prospects of the Emilia-based company that is looking abroad with growing determination.

Emulating the same spirit that drives the men and women that go to make up the company and the ideas that guide it - Lameplast is earmarking sizeable fresh resources to increase production and R&D. The Modena-based company will directly benefit from the investments and work, that will translate into more space and more machines. The move will also affect Lameplast’s associated company COC, set up as a parallel concern specialised in filling for third parties and now active on the market with a broader, revamped range of services.
All this was officially announced by company president Giovanni Ferrari, who has won a solid reputation for himself at international level for innovatory production of plastic containers - aboveall monodose - for the pharmaceutical sector. Ferrari also hinted at other important new features, such as the design of new packaging for the pharmaceutical sector and the imminent starting up of projects for the neighbouring cosmetics sector, now showing ever-greater affinities with pharma. And as far as foodstuffs are concerned...

Structural investments
The Modena-based company has won a name for itself in time the world over as a commercially aggressive, innovatory concern with all the credibility of the better-structured companies. Management now rates that the time is ripe to exploit the knowhow Lameplast has built up over the years on various levels to help the company make further headway. And while the company confirms its original strategy - aiming at innovation and serving the customer - new means are now needed to attain these ends. «We are broadening our R&D structure - Ferrari states - where a team of four persons will work full-time in creating new packaging for pharmaceutical products, this in line with the specific demands of the market. Furthermore, after the recent increase in storage area - now covering 2.500 m2 and that also serves as a storage area for our customers - we wish to dedicate more space to production. To this end we have earmarked an area next to the workshop for creating moulds and for building up our machine yard. Alongside this we are also looking for a larger site for COC Farmaceutici, that is still our natural complement in the filling and testing area, but that has also acquired a progressive importance at European level and now needs new structures and an organization to match».

Many new projects...
If we look at the company’s recent output, the effort made appears fully in line with company objectives that aboveall confirm Lameplast’s original vocation.
«This year - Ferrari continues - we created four new types of monodose for liquid formulations for four different pharmaceutical concerns. We obviously have to keep quiet on these until the products have been launched. I can only anticipate that we have worked further on simplifying usage, also devising pre-dosing solutions and tamper-evident guarantees. As well as that we have designed containers and closures made in different colors for the new line of opthalmic products for an important customer, this in order to tell the single specialities apart. Finally, for the same segment we have completed a project on which we have been working for no less than four years now, this in view of a very ambitious objective that I will for now limit myself to defining as a “revolutionary”».
All this activity - Ferrari comments - is today also backed up by the changes underway in the pharmaceutical segment, that is going through a stage of general recovery and that is beginning to show a hitherto unseen interest for packaging, recognized as a vital way of livening up products that are by now consolidated. Furthermore, in Italy the overall market situation is even better due to the fact that «...Italian firms are on average run by highly capable people, used to solving problems and inventing solutions with speedy, streamlined structures that you don’t find elsewhere. Something that also favourably affects suppliers, aboveall if they show similar characteristics...».

... And a couple of new markets
But there is also another market outlet, close to, with similar features, that is growing in importance and that now accounts for some 20% of turnover: Lameplast is dedicating more and more resources to cosmetics, both in organizational and design terms. « The cosmetics market is all the more interesting because, despite the fact that attention to quality is comparable to that of the pharmaceutical industry, here decision-making and the product lifespan times are a lot shorter and the drive for new features is felt much more keenly. On the commercial side of things these features enable us to fully exploit our offer, adopted not only by the leading companies, that act as pathfinders, but also by a welter of small firms that follow in the wake of innovation. For these applications we a devising new dedicated projects that exploit our knowhow acquired in the specific field of monodose as well as the experience built up in multidose, and that enable subsequent dispensing of the product without compromising container sterility». And this is not all. As Ferrari tells us - hitherto undreamt-of prospects are gradually opening up in the more distant food sector «hence we have devised a new type of closure, obviously made of plastic, that has solved the specific problem of a large multinational». A new business? Here one best be prudent.

Make conquests abroad and double turnover
Hence Lameplast constitutes a marketing textbook case, to be included in the chapter dedicated to development based on innovation. All the more so if one considers the company’s progressive and gradual expansion abroad is based on the capacity to create new packaging solutions. As Ferrari states «This can take many ways... In the pharmaceutical sector for example, many products developed independently by Lameplast have been exclusively purchased by single large customers; something similar happened on the Indonesian market where our success was powered by the monodose containers created for the local leader in the opthalmic sector. Obversely we hit the mark with the Brazilian market by fielding our entire range of products, our success here being due to the lively demand for new features witnessed in that area. This has aboveall led us to consider a direct presence; thus we set up a commercial company with a local partner [Lamefarm E.n.], we are terminating the construction of a service structure similar to our COC while a production site will be up and running by the end of 2001. All this also because we should not forget, we a talking of an area where everything - even turnover - is of such proportions as to justify investments on a structural level».

Small steps with a will
Lameplast has ventured out into a policy of gradual expansion as befits a concern created for serving the pharmaceutical field, where product turnover and decision making times are without a doubt longer that in more market-oriented segments. As soon as it learnt to walk though the company soon quickened its pace, to the point of formulating audacious growth projects that aim at doubling turnover in five years.
In order to attain this objective, as well as devising approaches personalised to the various areas around the world, Lameplast counts on consolidating its own position on the Italian market «where we grew up and where even today we still have 50% of our turnover» by further increasing its dedicated commercial structures.
The features of a company that has grown to strength, and that impose their own form of dynamism, are difficult to describe in abstract terms: they follow the recognition of the value of the men and women that go to make up the company («great personal commitment being truly put in by all concerned») service attitude, surpassing the limits already reached for the sake of it, of creating something better, something new».
«Since its very creation - Ferrari sums up - Lameplast has tried to pace itself to the problems of the sector alongside its customers. This is how our most successful products came into being and this is how we came to set up COC. Furthermore, when we create a new project we never forget that it has to be made and filled on a certain line, at a given speed and following preset quality parameters. Indeed working with a machine producer like IMA has given us a considerable advantage on this side of things. But what counts most of all when it comes down to it is the verve with which we all work. It is born out of a love for challenges, something that generates both solidarity within and the force we direct outwards, that takes shape in the best ideas for the subject at hand».
