No, no... Sonia Pedrazzini Packaging Designer | | Boxes (and more) with a surprise inside What they hide in the innumerable examples of packaging in so many advertising stories. Or, packaging talks about products. Carosello (those cute little advertising shorts of some years ago) are no longer things for kids, and it is not always easy to immediately understand what a certain advertisement is telling us; to better draw attention it frequently needs to use transversal and indirect language and apparently wayward forms and concepts; indeed, the subjects that photos and TV ads highlight are not always the true and actual product to sell, that is, the object of the communiqué, sometimes these are only just metaphors to speak about something and to say it in a certain way. Here is a brief (and therefore incomplete) review of advertisements in which the packaging is the preferred subject of metaphor, containing a vehicle for messages, but is not necessarily the object of the advertisement itself. Unleaded perfumes It is a refined, small perfume bottle of transparent crystal, adorned with an embroidered gold cord and stamped with a family trademark; it could be the bottle of a high-end perfume, as its name is Concentré and it contains a precious liquid. Is it eau de parfum? Nope! This bottle does not hold the concentrate of rare floral essences but the luxurious details of Polo Carat A.M. 96, the car produced by Volkswagen for the French market. In this surprise box, the glass packaging, the bottle with its perfume, is not the actual object of the advertisement but, in a more intriguing and surprising way, is the subject, that is, the individual, the actor, the entity that it lends its face to; in other words, it is the mask used to symbolize a specific luxury product, in this case the Polo Carat A.M. 96 car. Other boxes, other stories. A completely different perfume of a more modern and geometric form, with accurate and elegant detailing (it brings to mind the bottles of Bulgari and Fendi put together), is taken in hand by a somewhat retro, voluptuous Lolita; on the fresh and antique light green page of the advertisement, we read the word Egoista in liquid characters-a memory of a well-known Chanel product. The advertising message says: Rich inside. New fascination. More precious outside and on the glass of the bottle, these revealing words: Twingo Initiale. Rich inside. New fascination. More precious outside. New box. Monovolume, Multiattractive. Surprisingly, even here the real contents of the small perfume bottle are not only the fragrance but also the capable techniques of the Renault Twingo-how well our bottle has managed to impersonate this! The Nokia cellular phone is contained (in the photo it actually appears inside) in a huge glass bottle that is simple, square and transparent, and closed by a heavy golden tap that has the appearance of a lock (an element which in my opinion runs against the advertising concept of Nokia: Connecting People). There are no concessions made to frivolity, except for perhaps a touch of lustre given by the overly bright, chromatic steel-colored cover of the cellular phone; and then still more rigor, refinement, technology and dynamism. For both men and women. How many things can a bottle tell us about perfume? Total protection Specific products to protect against the harmful rays of the sun-lotions, oils, creams-packaged in bottles, little tubes, little jars, sticks and sprays, are normally sold in perfumeries, pharmacies or at the supermarket. But today you can also find them at the bank. In the era of the New Economy, even those who are always busy and dont have the time to go to the beach risk sunburn. In fact, online trading can burn you, says the message, at least buy the new Total Risk Control Protection 121 lotion, the electronic service from the Bank of Salento, in whose branches it is possible to buy this bottle of powerful fluid. With Visa I can even get a suntan. Recently, a bottle of SPF 8 sun cream has begun to appear in the advertisements for Visa. Has the noted credit card recently launched into the world of cosmetics? No, no
That bottle close-up is informing us that with the Visa card you can really buy everything, even just a small bottle of protective sun cream, and even just a cheap cream (starting from 18.500 Lire, to be exact, according to the receipt which accompanies your purchase). This time the packaging chosen beforehand by the advertisers as a subject is the mask - it is a standard-size bottle, anonymous yet universal, and it is exactly the right metaphor to represent all the low-cost objects you could possibly buy with the credit card in question. Posing bottles Bottles and packaging of various types are also the protagonists of the meaningful and well-done advertising campaign for Corepla (the national consortium for the recycling of plastic packaging). It does not show only pathetic garbage dumps on the edge of cities, nor technological environments of recycling materials. It does not even show the activity and service provided by Corepla, but instead the perfect bodies of men, women, and children drawn in plastic poses while they train themselves to squeeze some empty bottles which are destined to be thrown out in the proper receptacles for separating garbage. The meaning is clear-good inside, beautiful outside-and the empty bottle is the ideal tool for this mental and physical workout. She is not ugly, but the model that poses for the clothing brand Rose D appears tired and suffering. She is sitting on a metal chair and seems to be a cleaning woman- we find her in what could be a public bathroom. What is she doing? Who is she? The questions will never find a response because in this case the important thing is solely to create a moment of suspension between one page and the next of the newspaper; a pause which captures ones attention and makes us look for a second at that product. And surely what catches my eye and makes me linger on the image for a moment are the two plastic bottles (of mineral water?) that are posed on a white and pristine sink. The meaning? I still havent understood it and maybe this time I let myself get a little too carried away, thanks to my professional warping. Packaging for all tastes A just-unwrapped caramel in its big bed of wrinkled and lightweight aluminium smells of sugar and if you reach out your hand, you can grab and eat it
Only take the tastiest part of the secretary, says Telecoms invitation to try its voicemail service, Memotel. The image of reference for the message is certainly the caramel, and above all the presence of the packaging, that is, the paper that it is wrapped in and that still, if you stop a moment, reinforces the taste and the freshness. In this case not showing the fragile wrapper would have compromised the effectiveness of the whole communication. Even Infostradas advertising uses a piece of paper: a paper ball that contains a ripped-off price
that of Infostrada Tempozero. It is interesting to note that in this case the paper seems, more than a covering, a true and proper antipackaging, the part of the packaging to be thrown out; but they know that whatever Luddite action, even if it physically destroys something, in reality will cooperate to reinforce the ideal image
So thought the company whose ball of torn-off paper most likely scored a goal. The promotional advertisement for Clinique, in which many beautiful colored lipsticks are displayed in a green carton basket, packs a singular impact. The surprising effect is given by the contrast between the aluminium lipstick tubes, which are lucid, elegant, and much sought-after, and the carton box that contains them. It has a coarse, opaque, simple, natural appearance, which in recent popular imagination might be easily associated with the ecological. Moreover, a big, beautiful ripe red strawberry, which looks as if it had just rolled out of the basket, makes ones mouth water and clarifies the message of this advertisement: to stimulate the taste, that is, to try those lipsticks just as if we were dealing with eating a fresh, sweet and gluttonous fruit. Even a beer can in the center of the advertisement for Think Pink, a company that produces sports clothing, has something to do with taste, more generally a taste for life. The headline goes Happy to be me and you see a young girl, happy to be herself, who bites into the crushed can of Bud. The message is immediate. Bite into life, taste the taste of adventure, of enjoyment and
of the beer. But perhaps there is something more. And if a young person were to throw even a subliminal message not to litter? The supposition comes to me from that vaguely canine gesture of hers of the beer can between her teeth, and from a certain I-dont-know-what that reminds me of the natural inclination of dogs to fetch things that their owners throw. Everything included Some kinds of packaging want to talk to us about price. Cheap, accessible, convenient prices; all-inclusive prices. For example, see Euronics, which, together with its electronic appliances for the home, also sells technical assistance (indeed, the assistant) and many other services and extras. In order to communicate this, the company packages a man - the technical assistant, the seller, and the Euronics guarantee in the flesh-together with the object purchased, and creates a custom-made package recut to measure. The packaging - the white packing materials that contain product and services, in this case, is the metaphoric necklace that holds together and offers to the client the whole company philosophy. Lets continue to talk about price
How can we make people understand that a high-end product can also be a serious product and that quality can have a very contained cost? With packaging, naturally! This is what Audi is doing in its promotional campaign. In order to present the new features of its A6 motor, Audi uses a packaged egg, in a typical recycled-paper carton. The perfection of the new 6-cylinder motor. It is no longer a luxury, underlines the closing message, and it is true because the egg, which is commonly accepted as a symbol of perfection, becomes a widely-distributed product and therefore no longer one of luxury for the few when it is put in a group of 6 eggs in a carton, even if it stays perfect all the same. Therapeutic packaging Sometimes the presence of packaging in advertising has therapeutic, or medical value and can be, at a metaphorical level, a socially useful element. I am not exaggerating. For example, lets analyze (as a psychologist would), the advertisement that Telecom created in order to present its Survival Kit (for the Italian travelling abroad). We see a can of peeled tomatoes, 500 grams of spaghetti, basil, and telephone cards. Most of all, the headline makes us understand that it has to do with a situation of extreme disadvantage-and it talks about survival-for which there is a need for some solution with impact; it reveals, in fact, a condition of great existential solitude: you are abroad, far away from home, from your friends, from Mom; you find the necessity to have something to eat, maybe a plate of amatriciana (maybe the food of the host country is not to your liking), but youre not sure what to do and which ingredients to use
You risk dying of hunger. Fortunately, the international telephone card will help you at just the right time to get in touch with your mother and save your skin, but it will not be a call to help you to find yourself again, but on the contrary to find that very can of peeled tomatoes, the symbol of Italianism in the world, which will give you security and which will help you to recapture, if you are lost abroad, your three-colored identity. The TDI compresses (energy-saving motors) of Volkswagen dont act on the psyche but directly on the body. They are packaged in a pharmaceutical blister of 10 capsules and give the most effective solutions to problems regarding the energy saving of the motor. Take one and youll travel much farther. The car has become human, in his or her image and likeness and, like him or her, every once in a while needs the help of a pill. There is no need for prevention with the miraculous toothpaste of the SMA Supermarkets. Indeed, the ideal formula (at least for SMA customers) for an always bright smile is to be satisfied or your money back. In this way, the noted chain of supermarkets finds a really fun ambiguity in order to sell itself using the conveniently re-examined and corrected packaging of their own products. The tube of toothpaste therefore does not contain toothpaste per se but sensations of freshness and flavour and the glass jar with the peeled tomatoes - Try it and like it - is a test to assure the maximum quality. Therapeutic packaging has struck again. In an even more subtle way. After the cure for your psyche, and for your body, the packaging here proposes as a cure for the soul: The service of the Sma supermarkets are really incredible. They know how to make you smile, even if you are not happy with what you bought, etc., etc
. And happiness is not a small thing. This episode of Carosello is finished for today (Everybody go to bed now). But, as demands the tradition, it will return tomorrow. Sonia Pedrazzini Packaging Designer |
