L’ondulato a convegno

Cooperation and creative management: the winning strategies for the corrugated board industry, as emerged during the latest FEFCO convention.
Corrugated convention

«The development of new common strategies is an essential tool for beating outside competition and avoiding the pointless price war». This is the salient statement that emerged from the opening speech at the 26th FEFCO Congress (European Federation of Corrugated Board Producers), given by Lothar Jacobmeyer. During his speech he also highlighted how competition, albeit a necessary element, can actually cancel all profits if it is focused exclusively on prices.

Marketing: the road to success
Approximately 500 people from over 40 different countries participated in the convention, which was held June 5–8 in Hamburg. The first of the three sessions revealed that the winning strategy for the corrugated industry should be based on cooperation, and should provide for a common marketing programme for the entire sector; one that exploits all the instruments and techniques made available by modern marketing.
The importance of marketing should not, however, overshadow the fact that competition remains the main problem in the corrugated board industry, and that there are four levels of this: within the sector itself, against other forms of packaging, against the other players in the distribution chain, and directed at the end consumer. Keeping this in mind, it is fundamental to allow for the importance of service quality to the end consumer and the influence that new marketing trends, especially e-commerce, will have on the distribution chain.
The second session focused on the elements and guidelines necessary for continual growth for the corrugated packaging industry. This sector has consolidated its position within the distribution chain, and has also managed to obtain the revision of the EEC Directives on packaging, owing to FEFCO activities, as well as enhancing the sector image in a proactive move. Special attention was then given to the sheet production, the growth of which is conditioned by some key factors, such as reduction in quantity produced, the growth in the non-consumer market, local growth in carton box business and the emergence of “specialist” operations. Next came the results of a study, which demonstrated how corrugates are also suitable for wrapping fresh products. The final speech of the second day proved to be especially interesting, offering a focus on the performance features of corrugate examining both performance and the use of raw materials.
The final session of the convention highlighted the importance of a modern and creative management of the cardboard industry, which is indispensable for dealing with the challenges of the new millennium and strengthening the position of the entire sector in a highly globalized context, dominated by competition supported by completely new instruments, such as e-commerce.
Within this new environment the corrugate industry can avail of different strategic possibilities: from setting up partnerships at various levels, to supply differentiation, to creative development in graphic design.

Pack Expo Brasil: soluzioni integrate

Pack Expo Brasil: integrated solutions
More than 18,000 visitors attended the 2000 edition of Pack Expo Brasil, that was held in San Paolo, September 12-15. The fair provided some interesting suggestions for packaging, materials and production processes. «The success of this exhibition demonstrated the efficiency of our strategy, which aims to offer integrated solutions for converging markets» stated Ricardo Santos Neto, president of the Brasil Rio Group. «This is evidenced not only by the number of fair visitors, 18,000 people for 250 exhibitors, but especially by the quality of the contacts generated with decision makers of first-level user companies». The fair was attended by the presidents of such prestigious companies as Pepsi, Nestlé and Unilever. These really are positive results for a “horizontal” fair that involves all the segments for the wrapping industry, from producers of weighing machines to those of coding, labeling and filling machines, to companies producing glues, paints and dyes. The number of foreign participators was high, and demonstrates the interest in the dynamics of a market with enormous growth possibilities such as Brasil, which is still paying the penalty of “important” customs duties and which is difficult to reach, for practical reasons. The fair also provided a showcase for the new trends in materials and production processes; in particular the ever-growing use of packaging as a publicity tool. Packaging as an added value was also the theme of the convention held at the same time of the exhibition, stressing the increasingly close relationship between pack and communication: the actual labels and packages of products have become potential publicity objects, acquiring a key role in the sales of the same consumer goods and highlighting the need for a production logistic that is integrated from production to sale. In reference to this point, the Label Mídia created a lot of interest. This is a multi-page selfadhesive label produced by Novelprint, which serves as a medium for a broad range of advertising material and promotional coupons, while also facilitating interaction between consumer and producer.

USA: packaging also growing
The delivery of packaging machines produced in the US registered an overall growth of 7.3% in 1999. In September the results of the seventh annual study on the run of the consignments of packaging machines produced in the US carried out by the PMMI (Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute) were made public. The study only regards new machines, delivered and invoiced by US and Canadian producers or by foreign producer companies that have an independent branch operating in America, and the results obtained derive from the average of the data gathered in 17 different categories of machine producers. The global increase was 7.3%, 82.2% accountable to the domestic market, that registered a growth of 8.4% and 17.8% by exports that, despite the braking action of the strong dollar, were 4.1% up on the previous year. Among the overall factors that fuelled the positive trend of the domestic market, one surely has the strong growth of the US economy and a generalised increase in demand. And again the need to increase productivity and lower costs by way of the technological update of machines, the need to conform to the new directives governing materials and dimensions, and the clientele ‘s interest in increasing the level of automation and computerisation. Having got over the worries connected with the millennium bug, other elements still subsist that have in some ways put a brake on the growth of demand. The study refers to the great company transformations underway at all levels that, following on from the forming of corporations and the mergers, have led to delays in ordering new machinery, as well as to the closure of many works (aboveall in the beverage in the food and in the paper production segments). In particular this latter factor has led to used machines being placed on the market.
