Color, casting out nines
Often united in a profitable cooperation, at times in disagreement as to the definition of reciprocal responsibilities, converters and producers of consumer goods are called upon to find a shared solution for solving problems covering approval tests. On this count we publish a contribution by EAFA (European Aluminium Foil Association).
By Eafa

It is easy to produce a bright and colourful motif on a computer screen but it is a lot more difficult to actually print it: printing processes can only achieve the same result by using as many printing rolls as possible. However, this means high costs, which clients are not always willing to bear.
In addition, when one prints materials such as paper, foil or laminates, which play an important role in printed packaging, one can only ever get close to the colours of the graphic design but not reproduce them completely: compromises are unavoidable and these have to be made at the factory acceptance-test stage, where the client and the printing plants have to reach an agreement.
In doing so, one has to bear in mind that the colour proof has not been produced using the same colours and printing system that is subsequently being used to expedite the order; moreover, one will not be able to reproduce the glossy appearance of an individual colour proof using the industrial-scale printing machine. If, on top of all of this, one is dealing with a complex product, such as a four-pack of yoghurt pots comprising different packaging materials, especially as the paper of the secondary packaging is usually offset printed, the aluminium foil lid is rotogravure printed and flexographic printing is used for the pot itself, or the plastic foil from which it is deep drawn.

Cutting back on times
Conflicts of interest cannot be avoided. Clients from the food or pharma sectors, in particular, are keen to obtain a print image that is consistent and in accordance with the pre-requirements. Converters are keen to achieve this, too, but at the same time they must also ensure that time spent on modifications during the acceptance test is kept within acceptable limits. The high costs associated with a lengthy acceptance test in the factory, not only for raw materials and personnel but also because a capital-intensive printing machine is not generating any turnover.
The need to tackle the problem of optimising is becoming increasingly more urgent because contracts are for ever-smaller production batches, especially in the food sector: manufacturers are offering an ever-broader range of products with correspondingly smaller quantities of the individual products.

The converters’ opinion
A survey of 18 European converters carried out for Eafa revealed that the acceptance test for the printing of flexible packaging materials could take up to 3.5 hours. Most of the companies surveyed said this time could be reduced significantly. Only four of the companies said they were really satisfied with over half of the acceptance tests they had carried out so far.
If one ignores technical problems (such as the fact that the machine is standing idle while the proof is being examined and that the register can then slip slightly when the machine is started up again) the printing plants blame on the clients’ “indecisiveness” during the acceptance test. In the survey, they often voiced criticism that marketing specialists who were still inexperienced in the technicalities of printing were sent to carry out the acceptance test. It is particularly troublesome when the client suddenly conjures up a new design using a different printing process. Clients often decline to accept the resultant costs.

Problems and solutions
From the printing plants’ point of view, the optimum duration of the acceptance test would be 55 minutes (average value); they regard an acceptance test that lasts more than 2.5 hours as being completely unacceptable. According to them, an hour is plenty of time for their client’s representative to make the one or other change. This raises the question as to how the acceptance test can be optimised with respect to the time taken, costs and quality. However, many printing plants are sceptical about an eventual standardisation of the acceptance test: companies’ requirements are too specific and that even clients within the same company would be unwilling to accept the same common standard. If it is not possible to have a general standardisation of the acceptance process, a checklist (to be agreed with the client) would certainly be a suitable way to introduce routine, based on certain rules, into the acceptance test. Only 15% of the printing plants surveyed currently use checklists.

The converters’ proposal
Of course, a crucial factor is that clients accept such an approach. In principle, they ought to be interested because they too will benefit from having a more efficient process.
It is of primary importance that clearly defined specifications regarding colour or colour proofs form the basis of the acceptance test. The colour gamut of specifications should only include the production printing machine that is to be used. Moreover, from the client’s side, only personnel with printing technology skills or which has been given special training, and which is authorised to make decisions, should carry out acceptance tests. Of course, the client wants the best possible results and is not willing to let himself be pressured by a time limit for the acceptance test or by the number of prints he asks for. However, he then has to be willing to accept the charges this incurs. Given that 60 minutes is sufficient time for an optimum acceptance test, the respective agreement with the client could envisage the first hour of the acceptance test being free of charge or as being included in the normal cost calculation.
All effort over and above that would then be charged extra.
The discussion is open.

A good story of innovation
Markem Italia celebrates 30 years in the business and presents new coding solutions, in keeping with its tradition, thanks to which it is today leader in the field of automatic identification.

Markem's market results clearly show just how strategic (and in many senses essential) the value of good customer contacts are over time, letting it set up (and consolidate) a "channel of special communication", the only true way to sustain harmonious and substantial growth for any industrial concern.
On the 30th of September, Markem Italia therefore wanted to celebrate its first 30 years in the business together with its customers: in fact, 1974 was the year when this great American privately owned company decided to open up a branch in Italy. Now, in 2004, the Italian and American management have wanted to share this special moment with the trade press, and in a special setting: the St. Georges Premier in the heart of the Parco di Monza.
As well as taking a look at the long, happy story of the Italian branch, there was also time to present the new series of SmartDate® 5 heat transfer coders (see box), the most recent example of the company's ability to renew its offer with state-of-the-art solutions. Then again, Markem's efforts in innovation have been ceaseless, right from the day it was set up. Back in 1911, F. A. Putnam, great-grandfather of the current owner Jim Putnam, set up the company with a clear aim: to introduce a new mechanism and a special ink for printing that made it possible to replace manual identification of products with a high-speed variable data system.

Creating value for its customers
Marco Bitasi, managing director of Markem Italia, provided figures showing the success enjoyed in Italy: back in 1974 the Italian branch saw turnover worth 450 million Liras, selling a total of 38 machines, whereas today turnover now exceeds Euro 16 million Euros and some 900 machines are delivered each year.
Over the last three decades, Markem has supplied the Italian market with integrated solutions for the graduation of plastic syringes, marking systems for electronic and industrial components and label printing systems for fabric labels sewn into garments; then, in 1980, the company introduced its patented coding technology - Touch Dry - that quickly became the standard for coding of food packs using flexible film.
In the 1990's Markem consolidated its position
in the field of automatic identification for the packing industry, by developing the concept of "intelligent coding", a full answer capable of satisfying all coding and marking needs. Then, just two years ago, it introduced laser technology for automatic identification, the “Uptime Total Services Program” assistance and training service and the interactive MyMarkem site. Today, the latest addition to the product range is the SmartDate 5 coder with the potential, according to Andy Gray (Product Manager SmartDate), to offer highly competitive performance.
Jeffrey B. Miller, chairman of the Product Identification Solutions division of the Markem Corporation, stresses the distinctive characteristics of the independent Markem: the personal efforts made by the Putnam family, that for generations has been
responsible for drawing up the industrial long-term strategy and for reinvesting profits in R&D, always putting the real needs of the markets before any attempt
to "play" the stock exchange.
This is an approach that is coherence with the company's key words: innovation, respect, reliability and integrity, concepts of substance and not mere slogans. And the market can swear to this.

I protagonisti a confronto”, tenutosi a Mosca in settembre.

Logistics between Italy and Russia
As part of the process of internationalisation of Italian logistics, started by Ailog and the Ministry of Productive Activities in order to speed up the development of Italian businesses' dealings in East Europe and to make it easier for local businesses to have dealings with the EU, Airlog has now been set up. This is an Italian/Russian logistics and management association which aims to organise specialisation courses and training courses and to promote local IT and infrastructure projects aimed at connecting Italian and Russian businesses in the most efficient way.
The setting up of Airlog was officially announced during the meeting entitled "Logistics: the key elements for the development of business relations between Italy and Russia. A look at the protagonists", held in Moscow in September. During this meeting, businessmen, scholars and representatives of Italian and Russian institutions had the opportunity to exchange experiences and to discuss future prospects, to show the advantages of moving production sites to Russia and the potential for doing business with this country.

Labeling: *thirteen a lucky number
However luck has nothing to do with it here, even though - as businessmen know only too well - good fortune continues to be a crucial component in the success of any business. In fact thirteen years have now past since A.L.Tech Srl (Advanced Labeling Technologies) was first set up, it's very name pointing to its international vocation, allowing it to produce and distribute self-adhesive labeling systems, decorations systems, coding and product identification systems around the globe.
Set up way back in 1991 by a group of people working in a small rented shared in Cornaredo (just outside Milan), A.L.Tech is today rightfully held to be a leading global manufacturer of labeling machines. In its site (now fully owned) covering 3500 m2 in Bareggio (MI), the company now produces thousands of systems every year which are then sold through 70 distributors to some 45 countries, from New Zealand to Argentina, Iceland to South Africa.
Just over 30 people are responsible for annual turnover of 6 million Euros, with 70% going in exports: from the small cost-effective automatic ALstep applicators, to the sophisticated, high performance ALritma heads and the full linear ALline labeling systems for flat, oval and cylindrical flacons, the product range is completed with the ALcode print and apply systems using heat transfer print units from Sato of Japan. The latest arrival is Alsleeve, designed for automatic application of heat shrink sleeves (seals and also pack decoration) and currently gaining in market share. "In addition to excellent market results, we have the satisfaction of having created a healthy, competitive business," explains the president Piero Salvini, "where product and process innovation is the key point; we have worked towards this goal with great team spirit and here I must give all our workers full credit for having been able to successfully interpret the strategic potential and "transversability" of our products with the development of efficient systems capable of satisfying the needs of commodity manufacturers".

Ortofrutta in “blu”

Dugan’s numbers
Dugan supermarkets (Shop Group) were founded in 1971 by the Pozzi family, that has given rise to a chain of food stores with an atmosphere of “your neighbourhood shop”. They now have 42 salespoints (owned by them or in franchising) aboveall located in Lombardy and Piedmont, with an especially high concentration in the province of Milan. The network is served by a single purchasing centre, Shop SpA, that also coordinates the promotional and marketing operations, and runs the goods logistics through 3 platforms dedicated to cold cut meats and dairy products, fruit and vegetables and grocery products. Over and beyond the circuit of Dugan brand stores, Shop SpA supplies other distribution brands wholesale, including Massi Market, Onda Market, Eurospin, Di Meglio and Tuttidì, covering a total of 150 stores.

“Blue” fruit & vegetables
For handling fresh fruit & vegetables in its own warehouses, Dugan supermarkets (Shop Group) have adopted reusable blue crates from the Euro Pool System circuit. And they are now planning to extend the same to other merchandise.

The Shop Group (Dugan brand supermarkets and the relative purchasing centre) have always dedicated a lot of time for fresh produce, that today accounts for nearly 50% of turnover and stands as a central feature in the chain’s commercial offer. In particular, fruit and vegetables also play a crucial role from the point of view of positioning and image, given that the well-contrived display of fruit & vegetables in the salespoints contributes to forming that appeal and that “neighbourhood store” atmosphere that distinguishes Dugan chain stores.
As fruit & vegetable purchasing head Giuseppe Pozzi explains: "The volumes are on the increase: I founded the dedicated platform, covering total space of 3,000 m2, in year 2000, where we now have a yearly turnover of 42 million kgs, with the objective of 52 million kgs in the coming financial year".

The advantages of reusables
The cooperation with Euro Pool System is relatively recent (it goes back to 2003) and was started up for various reasons.
As Pozzi explains: "We started working with Euro Pool for fruit & vegetables and soon saw the benefits on various levels. Aboveall, using reusable crates solves a lot of problems at source in terms of disposal of used packaging, generating economies and avoiding environmental pollution. As well as that, this type of container leads to considerable savings in terms of logistics: from the optimisation of loads to a better manoeuvrability, going by a simpler definition of weight due to a set tare. Lastly, we also appreciated the advantages in terms of image and marketing: Euro Pool crates are all the same and have the same blue color, this creates a homogeneous and coherent image in all the fruit & vegetable sections, and transmits a message of hygiene and order to the consumer".
Summing up, the manager concludes, "If the adoption of the Euro Pool system does not in itself generate direct savings, all the same it contributes to reducing overall costs. To the point that we are considering extending the use of reusable creates to other merchandise, in particular in the cold cut meats and dairy sections".

A well-oiled circuit
In the current state of affairs, 70% of fruit & vegetable produce marketed in Dugan stores comes in Euro Pool crates and only 30% in disposable containers.
The circuit is “well oiled”, following optimized timing and routes. "Basically, Euro Pool procure the packaging for our suppliers, that send their goods to the Shop goods platform already packed in blue crates; these are then shifted to the salespoints. The empty containers then go back to the distribution centre, where they are withdrawn once or twice a day by Euro Pool, sent in trucks to washing centres and newly reinserted into the chain".
"According to first estimates - Pozzi goes on to explain - in 2004 we performed around two and a half million rotations and we are very satisfied with the system, to the point where we also want test out the new Big Box crates as soon as they are available on the Italian market. And in the future we foresee a further increase in the use of reusable Euro Pool System crates by our concern".

A new actor in the chemical sector
The image of an arch (architectural structure that unites and supports), symbol at one and the same time of equilibrium and dynamism, aptly expresses the chemical vocation of the company it represents. This the explanation behind the term Arkema, name of the new structure legally constituted on the first of October as part of the plan for the reorganization of Total’s Chemical Branch. Self-supported and buoyed by a solid financial structure, under the guidance of President and Managing Director Thierry Le Henaff, Arkema aims at achieving a targeted growth in Europe and the US and a strong presence in Asia, striving to confirm its position as key actor in the process of consolidation of the chemical industry; and this thanks also to a broad and varied offer (14 business units).
The new structure in fact serves three synergic and complementary market segments: vinylic products, industrial chemical and high performance products, sector in which Arkema products and brands (known and successful at European level) enjoy an excellent positioning. The group can in fact boast a world leadership in the field of fluorochemicals, oxygenated water, acrylics and PMMA, thiochemicals, organic peroxides, molecular filters, technical polymers and additives and can count on a European record at chlorochemical level.
Its solidity in commercial terms is coupled with consolidated knowhow in studies, exemplary conduct in terms of safety and sustainable development, a strong industrial base and a capillary world presence (90 industrial sites and 6 research centres in Europe, North America and Asia) as well as a turnover of 5 billion Euros.

New names in Basell: Randy Woelfel is now the president of Polyolefins North America, while Ian Dunn replaces him as the president of Polyolefins International. During his career, Woelfel has held several positions with Shell and Montell. He was made president of Polyolefins International in 2000, the year that Basell was set up.
Dunn previously worked in the LDPE, solvents, chemical bases and polypropylene sector at Shell Chemicals from 1986. In 1995 he joined Montell. Before becoming president of Polyolefins International, he was president and CEO of SunAllomer, a Basell joint venture in Japan. The newly elected presidents are part of the global management team at Basell.

Riempimento: “nuovi” protagonisti crescono

Filling: “new” protagonists growing
Set up in 2001, already winning its first important contract in the international field in 2003; 2004 was a year of consolidation, that also saw the company committed to the Chinese and north American market (where among other things it operates through its affiliated company WeightPack North America Inc.) while an extension of its manufacturing structure has been scheduled for 2005 with the creation of a new warehouse.
This, summing things up, is the brief but intense history of WeightPack Srl (Marmirolo, MN), a relative newcomer specialised in the creation of complete filling lines for liquid products, devised for the food, pharmaceutical and detergency sectors.
But appearances can be deceptive: the technology and the tradition that have backed up and brought about this amazing debut comes from way back.
In fact the heart of the Mantua based concern is the NC net weight filling technology first devised in 1979 by Carlo Corniani, entrepreneur who, bolstered by a longstanding experience in the packaging field, took on a new challenge in setting up the concern. This original system, in fact devised and perfected in time with the cooperation of qualified technicians, is at the basis of the Weightpack product offer, set out in net weight fillers (dosers), electronic and mechanical capping machines and complete lines (filling + capping). Available in both standard and special versions (suited to specific customer needs), the Weightpack systems enable the net weight and tare control of the single container, with estimation of the standard deviation and self-correction of the parameters for the final checkweigh operation, thus ensuring extremely accurate filling. The concern will take part at Emballage with its own stand, where it will preview the WFT Double D. Coherent with the principles that inspired the same (among other things offering the maximum design flexibility) but also in line with the rapid and continuous development of the markets, the WFT Double D is a machine that combines three functions: cleaning, filling and capping of glass containers. The machine’s innovatory feature lies in its dosing two separate food products that must remain rigorously separate.

The complete, cutting-edge solutions developed by this company will make an important contribution in the development and diffusion of the new Datasensor vision sensors, conceived for both stand-alone applications and as part of more complex artificial vision systems.

Fusioni e acquisizioni

Crescere in America

Mergers and acquisitions
An intense autumn for IMA: adding to the merger by absorption of Comitec, already part of Castenaso’s company, there's now the acquisition of Nova Packaging Systems (USA), a leading manufacturer of counting machines.

The Extraordinary Stockholders' Meeting, held in September 16 under the chairmanship of Marco Vacchi, approved the merger plan for IMA SpA to absorb Comitec Srl (Castel S. Pietro Terme, BO), which provides technical research and design services to Group companies. Given that Comitec is wholly owned by IMA , there will not be any exchange of shares nor any change in the ownership structure.
The Ordinary Stockholders' Meeting also appointed a new executive director: Paolo Dari, IMA's Special Finance and Planning Manager, who will remain in office until approval of the financial statements as of December 31, 2005. As a result, the total number of the Company's directors rises to 12, including 3 independent directors: Gino Benedetti, Italo Giorgio Minguzzi and Romano Volta.

Growing in America
IMA has signed the definitive contract to acquire 90,68% of the shares in Packaging Systems Holding LLC, based in Delaware, USA. This company owns 100% of the industrial group Nova Packaging Systems LLC, world leader in the manufacture of automatic machines for the bottling of capsules and tablets (counting machines) sold under the Kalish, King, Lakso, Merrill and Swiftpack brands.
The price of 14.6 million dollars was agreed in the presence of net borrowing of 2.7 million dollars at the end of August. The remaining shares in this US company are held by management with whom IMA has signed an agreement which, inter alia, grants them a put option over such shares in exchange for a call option. Both these options expire in 2009. If these options are exercised, the total cost of the shares held by management will range from a minimum of 2 million to an expected maximum of about 8.5 million dollars. The consolidated sales of the Nova Group are forecast to be around 35 million dollars in 2004, with an EBITDA in excess of 10% of net revenues. The consolidation of the last quarter of 2004 of the neo-acquired company will bring no significant variation to the growth of the consolidated revenues of the IMA Group for the end of the year, estimated between 5 and 8%.

Synergy and strategy
“By purchasing Nova Packaging - commented Alberto Vacchi, Managing Director of IMA - our Group further expands its range of machines for the packaging of capsules and tablets since, alongside our existing blister lines, we now offer bottle filling lines.
This form of packaging is preferred in certain nations, such as the United States, as well as in certain key sectors, such as healthfood. Furthermore, sales of the counting machines manufactured by Nova Packaging will give major impetus to the sales of other products in IMA's current range, such as capping, sealing, labelling, cartoning and end-of-line machines.
These machines, in the past, were acquired by Nova from third parties, assuming they not purchased them directly by the end customer.
Lastly, the acquisition of Nova Packaging means that the IMA Group now has also manufacturing facilities in the United States, a market that alone accounts for more than 50% of pharmaceuticals production worldwide”.

Approvvigionamento e imballaggio

Procurement and packaging
As far as procurement procedures are concerned, for user companies packaging stands as a problem with strong specific features: alongside standard procedures in fact packaging material demands the adoption of specific methodologies. The Istituto Italiano Imballaggio has organized a course entitled “Packaging Procurement” to help tackle this very subject. The course, to be held at the Institute’s Milan headquarters, will run for two days (22nd and 23rd November) and wishes to provide both those preparing to enter the sector as well as sector experts in need of an update with the necessary tools for optimising packaging procurement operations.

Between the future and past history
A high stele designed by Goffredo Gaeta to symbolise their onward-looking approach: this is how Senzani Brevetti Srl (Faenza, RA) wished to commemorate half a century manufacturing cartoning machines, automatic casepackers and logistic systems. Today, fifty years since its first patents for filling cases and boxes, the company has customers scattered throughout the world. During the festivities and celebrations, the company also wished to remember the late Cesare Quadalti: former managing director and president of the company, Quadalti was the man behind its development, working alongside the founder Iro Senzani.
