A. S.

Many solutions, unique too
Aimed at advancing the state of the art in materials and systems, yet also very concerned with turning to account its great experience in the field, Arcoplastica has won an important position for itself in the creation of thermoformed containers, with distinct shape, quality and service. A.S.

More than 700 dies are always on stock (a number that grows each month) and the virtually unlimited combinations of shape, size and different materials point to evident flexibility in production, together with a vocation for tailor-made solutions capable of satisfying even the most demanding of problems.
In other words, Arcoplastica: a company that specialises in thermoforming of food containers (about 80% of turnover), display stands and technical articles. This Piedmont company has been in the marketplace for thirty years, investing huge resources in upgrading the technology of its means and in Research & Development.
Despite its constant growth, the increased numbers of its technical and management staff and continual system innovation (as can be seen by ISO 9000:2000 certification and the adoption of an evolved IT system for processing orders, for instance), the company is proud that it's managed to retain a very "family" feel. In fact, Giorgio Torta, the founder, is now flanked by his children Laura (administration) and Marco (sales director), who personally looks after the company's customers, large and small, in North/Central Italy.
Indeed, as he opens the doors to the company in Andezeno (Turin), Marco reveals how "technological progress has expanded exponentially to keep up with the fast evolution in plastics - ever more complex and sometimes difficult to handle - and to satisfy the needs of our demanding customers. In our case, what's made all the difference (and still does) is our natural bent to go for complex technical production, rather than standard, mass production: a choice that comes from the spirit and imagination of the early days, of pure craftsmanship".

Competence one
can rely on

Arcoplastica is, therefore, especially careful of developments in materials and the very latest converting technologies, and this is recognised by its customers (whether the major international names or the many small regional businesses), who view the company as a reliable partner, with definite expertise and, above all else, capable of supplying the best solution for packing and enhancing their products.
This is proved by the many solutions produced using made-to-measure dies, as "whenever the required container is not in our catalogue", points out Torta, "we are involved in discussing the characteristics of the new packaging and follow all developments of this; in fact we select the most suitable materials, we produce the prototype and test its performance in our lab, then send the final design into production. Not to mention the role played by our thermoforming plant: some are built to our own design, while others have been bought and then adapted to our production needs".
Moreover, in the extrusion department (where Arcoplastica produces its monolayer and coextruded plastics, such as PP, PP/PE, PS, PS/PE, etc.) all the offcuts are collected "to get new raw materials for the creation of our technical items, i.e. display stands, components for the automobile and stationery sectors. This is a positive example of respect for the environment, which also results in a significant economic advantage".
Hygiene and safety - The customer oriented approach adopted by Arcoplastica, which "frees" the customer from many worries and so lets him concentrate on his core business, is supported by several initiatives aimed at guaranteeing max hygiene throughout the various stages of production.
In fact, Arcoplastica has internal rules based on HACCP standards and has designed the entire lay-out of the production units to protect the food containers from all risk of external contamination. However, the company's efforts in guaranteeing quality and safety don't just stop with the design and production, but carry through to the careful control of each and every item produced.
"While, on the one hand, we've automated the loading and unloading of containers in the case of big runs (in full respect of current safety standards), on the other we've adopted a visual control system during collection, stacking and packing of the trays produced in smaller quantities. Then again, in the space of a week or month, we're called upon to change the dies on each line several times and so controls by our expert staff remains the most reliable solution".

Innovations for
the food industry

More specifically, when it comes to the design of containers for food, Arcoplastica combines high standards of creativity and excellence with a strong sense of responsibility towards the consumer.
"As everyone knows, the shelf life of a product can be extended by using various types of packaging", explains Torta, "while trying at the same time to eliminate or at least reduce the use of preservatives and additives. The result is that each specific treatment aimed at maintaining the freshness and genuine nature of a food calls for a specific type of packaging that can offer the right gas barrier and moisture level in each situation and be heat resistant to cope with pasteurising or sterilising (where appropriate) or, alternatively, withstand low temperatures. The use of barrier materials is therefore on the up and we work very closely with our suppliers to understand all aspects of the novelties for these solutions and thus stay at the cutting edge".
An answer for every need - Given the complexity of the variables in the food sector, the technical progress in materials and output levels, careful analysis of consumption types and figures is therefore a must.
"Continual changes in dietary habits and lifestyles, not to mention variations in the size of modern families have led to a major revision of the way we present and distribute food", says the businessman. "For example, in the light of consumption of portioned and non-portioned frozen food, we've created crystal polyester packaging (C-PET) capable of withstanding considerable changes in temperature (from -40 to +240 °C), suitable for deep-freezing and oven-baking (conventional or microwave).
Moreover, for those wanting a product with similar behaviour, but at a lower cost, we also propose items made from a special type of polypropylene. It should be noted that this material generally performs well at high temperatures, though it tends to crack at low temperatures; we can, however, offer a special polypropylene that guarantees performance between -40 and +140 °C. A great solution, therefore", concludes Torta, "and this is just one example".

Serving thermoforming
Created at the beginning of the seventies, Arcoplastica has grown in time up to conquering a key position in producing heat-formed products: containers for the food industry, trays, display cases, general technical articles, of which the market has been seen to appreciate the complex and functional nature. Arcoplastica has managed to change with the times, adapting to the new market trends, without though ever falling short of the healthy principles around which it was founded, above all its craftsman-like care for quality and details.
Today the company employs more than 80 persons, is ISO 9000 Vision 2000 certified, can boast numerous key customers and thoroughly satisfies the demands of a whole host of merchandise sectors, this thanks to constant investment in research, technology and equipment. For instance, in 2002, Arcoplastica installed two new moulding machines (taking the number of on-stream lines to three).
This Piedmont company can thus mould trays in all shapes (square, round, rectangular, wedge-shaped…) in up to six colours on the side and two on the base, making it easier to produce personalised solutions not just in shape and material, but also in terms of the graphics.
Their activities range from study of materials and forms, creating moulds, administering warehouses, thermoforming and printing in up to six colours on trays, electronic sealing and hot blistering on cardboard, silkscreen: these are all activities carried out inside the company, guarantee of a systematic control of the entire production cycle and above all, protection of quality.
The following materials are used to produce the line of trays and containers for food: OPS, OPS/TR, OPS/MET, PS, PS/PE, PS/EVOH/PE, PP, PP/PE, PP/EVOH/PP, expanded PP, expanded PP/PE, expanded PP/EVOH/PE, PET, PET/PE, PET/EVOH/PE, PET-G, C-PET, PVC, PVC/PE, PVC/EVOH/PE and many others on request.
