Epal, the second revolution
The European Pallet Association turns over a new leaf, and with a new managerial approach and a renewed structure it offers itself as a valid support for European concerns.

Over the last few years, the competition of private concerns that run pallet hire has risked making things difficult for Epal. Hence the need to reinforce the association arose, fitting it out with a managerial structure with well-defined responsibilities and a structure capable of making the most out of the considerable potential.
Thus the board of directors of the European Pallet Association has decided to start up a radical internal reform. A leading role in this new phase will be played by Germans and Italians: the former due to size in terms of sheer numbers in the sector, the latter aboveall for the dynamism shown over the last few years.
Clear Ideas – Maurizio Ciani, president of Qualipal Italia, has taken on the role of CEO in Epal. “Among the priorities – Ciani states – we have in first place the reorganization of the structure, from data processing systems to human resources. Enthusiasm and energy are certainly not lacking: in but the first twenty days of work, we have defined another five standard measures of pallets and half pallets, to offer the market the solutions it has need of.
It is hence a question of winning the challenge of communication: in fact we need to let those working in the sector know about the advantages of the Epal system. In the past perhaps it was not clear to all that with the Epal wood pallet substantial savings could be made (even 30% over fives years, according to our estimates if they are well managed), without considering that this material does not cause problems from an electrostatic point of view, it is recyclable and, in all terms it pollutes less. Another prerogative of the wood pallets is if they are damaged they can be easily repaired. On this count though we have to counter the phenomenon of the non type registered repair centres, that alter the market and work to the detriment of quality”.

The Value Stream Map
The “Value Stream Map” arrives in Italy. This is a revolutionary tool being introduced by the Galgano Group in a few "sample" Italian manufacturing companies, as part of its mission to “italianize” today's most advanced, sophisticated management tools. The “Value Stream Map” (current and future states of art) lets one identify both the actions needed on the basis of precise priorities and the results expected from application of Lean Production. More specifically, Alberto Galgano's book “The Three Revolutions - Kicking Out Waste: Doubling Output With Lean Production" (published by Guerini Editore) illustrates and comments on the Value Stream Map tool, together with other indispensable tools for the application of Lean Production. The main advantages in using the two Value Stream Maps (current state of art and future state of art):
- a common process of improvement at all levels in the company (thus avoiding initiatives that only a few believe in and not felt to be their own by the rest of the organisation);
- the introduction of a coherent program in terms of priorities and timeframes.
