- 53% per i colori e vernici;
- 87% per solventi e diluenti;
- 53% per inchiostri da stampa;
- 25% per i lubrificanti (auto trazione e uso industriale);
- 70% circa per i grassi per auto trazione e uso industriale;
- scatole rotonde con coperchio a pressione di capacità da 50 g a 10 kg;
- secchielli conici con o senza maniglia di capacità da 4 a 10 kg;
- secchielli conici o cilindrici di capacità da 10 a 40 kg;
- fustini cilindrici con o senza bocchello e tappo a vite di capacità da 10 a 50 litri;
- petroliere (contenitori parallelepipedi) di capacità da 2 a 5 litri;

Utile all'industria e all'ambiente

Steel containers for chemicals
Of all steel packaging, tinplate containers for chemical and petroleum products make up a significant number: in 2002 the sector saw production by weight of around 165,000 tonnes, or 25% of overall production.

The market position of containers for chemical products, though it must be compared with other types of packaging, is certainly potentially competitive.
In Italy, with reference to the chemical and petroleum sectors, the products handled and packed amount to more than 3,237,000 tonnes, divided into: paints and varnishes, thinners and solvents, printing inks, adhesives and sealants, polishes for professional use, finishes and sound-proofing, plant protection products and liquid fertilisers, lubricants and greases for vehicles and industrial use.
The most important areas in terms of market size are lubricants and greases for vehicles (with a 49% share), paints and varnishes (25%), solvents and thinners 16%) and printing inks(4%). The remaining 6% is shared among the other products.
At a European level, these types of production amount to 20 million tonnes overall, with Germany in first place, followed by Italy, the United Kingdom and France, with more or less equal performance.

Types of packaging
There are about twenty Italian producers of containers intended for use in the chemical and petroleum sectors. Almost all are members of Anfima, which covers highly specialised companies whose products, because of their high quality, is also much in demand abroad. In fact, in this sector exports represent an important share of demand, accounting for about 26% of production.
Compared with rival types of packaging, tinplate holds an excellent position:
- 53% for paints and varnishes;
- 87% for solvents and thinners;
- 53% for printing inks;
- 25% for lubricants (vehicles and industrial use);
- 70% approximately for greases for vehicles and industrial use;
- 20% approximately on average for other chemical products.
But the share of steel packaging rises notably if we also consider 200-litre steel drums which, in some sectors, are extremely widespread (especially for lubricants and greases, solvents, inks, paints and varnishes).
The range put onto the market by producers of tinplate packaging for chemical products is vast, satisfying all requirements both from a technical point of view (regarding the product they have to contain) and from the point of view of sizes and accessories.
Within certain limits it is possible to have a customised product based on the customer’s needs.
The main types of containers on the market are:
- round tins with pressure lids with capacities from 50 g to 10 kg;
- tapered buckets with or without handles with capacities from 4 to 10 kg;
- tapered or cylindrical buckets with capacities from 10 to 40 kg;
- cylindrical tubs with or without spout and screw cap with capacities from 10 to 50 litres;
- square petrol/oil cans with capacities form 2 to 5 litres
- cylindrical cans with spouts and screw caps from 1 to 2 litres in capacity.
Depending on capacity, the container can be of different shapes, in terms of height and diameter.
Where closures are concerned, for liquid products there is usually a spout with screw cap, while for thick or semi-liquid products closures may be pressure lids, closures with tabs and closures with tabs and bands.

The manufacturing cycle
The production process begins with the cutting to size of sheets or rolls of tinplate, from which the body, top and bottom of the container will be made.
Thicknesses range from 0.20 to 0.36 mm and plating is usually 2.0 g/m2 on both surfaces.
The components making up the body are sent to the printing line and then to the assembly line, where they are shaped mechanically and electrically welded.
At the same time the bases and lids, previously shaped, pass to the line and are crimped to the body of the can. Welding and crimping are carried out with the utmost care, to ensure a high level of security, even in the event of the container accidentally falling: in this case, the packaging may be dented, but the product must not leak from the area of crimping (this is a basic requirement in the case of transport of dangerous materials).
The container then passes to the paint shop and, if necessary, to be polymerised in an oven.
Tests on performance, and especially the seal, are rigorous.

Distinctive elements
Tinplate containers intended for chemical products have many special features, all of which are very interesting.
• The first important aspect concerns easy and safe transportation, where steel provides excellent static and dynamic strength when stacked. Above all, this characteristic allows the products to be transported with the quantity of packaging (cartons, plastic film, etc.) being reduced to a minimum.
• The product held in a steel container does not react to external climatic conditions, particularly wide temperature swings.
• When transporting chemical products, the use of steel means that problems of compatibility between container and product can be eliminated.
• In many sectors of use (such as paint) the steel container is synonymous with a product of high quality.
• Thanks to the possibility of printing the surfaces and creating different shapes, the container can become an excellent marketing tool, capable of effectively communicating both the features of the product and the brand name.
• Finally, it is worth emphasising the eco-compatibility which stems from total recyclability: when recovered, it can be sent as scrap to the steelworks.
Useful for industry
and the environment
Packaging in the “general line” area, which includes the family of containers which are the subject of this examination, is collected both from urban waste (differentiated collection) and from industrial waste. It then passes to the steelworks, where it is melted down to obtain new steel products. In 2002, of 560,000 tonnes of packaging put onto the market (as well as “general line” packaging this total also includes open top containers for foodstuffs, 200-litre drums, crown caps, etc) the National Steel Consortium recovered and sent for recycling 310,000 tonnes, achieving a recycling percentage of 55.5% and beating by 5% the target set by law...
