- Propel Aqua Fitness, distributed in Italy by Pepsico Beverages Italia Srl, has recently made its entry into the channels of broadscale distribution. Presented to the market October last, the beverage stands as Pepsico’s innovative step in the sector of lady’s sports drinks: especially devised to satisfy the needs of women who practise sports, it adds a pleasant, light aroma to the purity of non-sparkling water, a low calory content and the presence of six essential vitamins. Already available in Italian gyms in the 500 ml format, it is now distributed in broadscale distribution chains in the new 750 ml format, in the two flavours of Orange and Lemon Lime. TV advertising campaigns, sampling activities, promotion at salespoints and information on the product accompanied its broadscale distribution launch.

On the distributor’s side - What have retailers and wholesalers planned as far as the handling of the distributors brand is concerned? What are the trends in the retail trade for 2004? This is what was discussed in occasion of the program of seminar that opened “the World of the Distributors Brand”, fair organized by the PLMA Private Label Manufacturers Association, the international organization for distributors’ brands), held 25th to 26th May at Amsterdam.
On the basis of responses supplied by the heads of the largest retail and wholesale firms throughout Europe, the 2004 survey has given a complete vision of the future of the distributor brand under different aspects, such as new products, advertising, marketing. Quality and relations with the supplier.
The information gleaned was then compared with the 2002 survey on the same subject. Among the other subjects dealt with, the strategies applied by retailers to tackle the competition in Europe and in the rest of the world and analysis of two cases of broadscale distribution, these being Carrerfour and Costco, that have planned two different winning approaches of the administration of the distributor brand.

Consumerismo e trasparenza

Consumerism and transparency
Fifteen days and over 4,000 e-mails sufficed to guarantee the success of the “SpronaCoop”, campaign promoted last February by the Centro Nuovo Modello di Sviluppo. Following on from the original form of pressure, in fact, the prime Italian distributor group has decided to reintroduce the “transparent” label on its own-brand products; it had given up on the same in occasion of the latest restyling of the brand, to now directly take on its responsibilities in conforming to social standards (Coop is SA8000 certified).
The Centro Nuovo Modello di Sviluppo, part of the Lilliput Network, has adopted critical consumption as a tool for pressure on companies, to induce them to behave in a more responsible way socially and environmentally.

In etichetta, i valori nutrizionali.

Galatine: each to their own pack
Milk+strawberry flavour has taken on the shape of Galatine Soft and the delicate pastel colors that nature assigns to the blend. Considering the taste of youngsters, but also mothers’ care for their nutrition, Galatine (Leaf Italia group), has made them soft, delicious and, aboveall, wholesome and natural. The new sweet is in fact 65% milk, with additivised strawberry juice, that ensures intake of calcium, phosphorous and protein.
But since Galatine is sure that the adults too will be conquered by the soft sweets, it has chosen two different packs to target the different age-groups: a fun cylindrical plastic tin closed by a pealable lid that fits nicely into children’s rucksacks, and a reclosable plastic bag for the adults, the latter being a new feature to keep the product fresh in time. The label bears full nutritional information.

The modern face of beauty
The project of Luca Franzosi, Designer of Altromodo Srl, will represent Italy at Monaco Luxe Pack Design Award. The competition, organized by the Principality of Monaco and the Luxe Pack Salon, is for young designers with a professional career of from a minimum of one year to a maximum of five years.
This year’s edition required the creation of a make-up case with mirror and applicator for the handbag, inspired by the theme Modernity in Monaco.
In Franzosi’s concept, called MO, the futuristic and modern image is the result of a delicate equilibrium between chromed finishes, refined tonalities that evoke the purity and the elegance of porcelain and the soft shape of a compact closed-form silhouette.
The make-up case, in acrylic resin, is made up of an extractable drawer with a mirror on both sides. Lipstick and rimmel can be assembled at the far end of the case that can alternatively be used as a jewel box.
The project, selected by a jury made up of exponents of the cosmetics industry, the Unipro president and by representatives from the press, will compete in the final leg with the selections from the other countries participating (Brazil, France, Germany, Japan, UK, Spain and USA).

Comunicazione e luoghi d’acquisto

Communication and purchasing venues
Edited by Valeria Bucchetti and published by FrancoAngeli (Milan), the volume “Design of the communication and purchasing experience” has now been published.
The work has come into being with the objective of exploring, from different points of view, the communicative dimension of the salespoint, investigating the role played by communication design.
Set out in two sections (a theoretical-critical one and a second one with metadesign leanings on specific communication problems), the volume gathers together a series of reflections from numerous experts on relations between new artefacts of communication and purchasing venues, to understand in particular how the new technologies contribute to the redefinition of the roles and functions of the communication tools, of its devices and languages.
Valeria Bucchetti is researcher at the Milan Polytechnic, where she is lecturer in Industrial Design for visual communication (Design Faculty).
She particularly deals with the themes relative to visual identity and to product communication systems.
