Sacconi

Big bag
Safe and separate
AT THE FAIR An eye to the needs of the market and the inclination to tackle (and overcome) even the most difficult challenges. This is how Minini Imballaggi moves, that brought the latest examples of its inventiveness and its technical knowhow to Ipack-Ima. M.P.

For over 70 years Minini Imballaggi (Verolanuova, BS) has been cultivating an extremely specific segment of the world of packaging with passion and constancy, providing a large part of Italian industry with flexible polypropylene containers for loose transport, in jargon called sacks or big bags.
An original core-business that the Brescian concern has consolidated in time thanks to strategic alliance (Minini is distributor for Italy for the Turkish producer Isbir Sentetik, international benchmark for the manufacture of bags), to a rich and varied offer and, to finish, a complete assistance service, that goes from presale consultancy to rapid delivery, going by way of the recovery of used packaging, either reused or sent for recycling. But Minini’s strongpoint is also given by their capacity to offer solutions perfectly in line with the needs of the market, both if this is a “general” demand for quality (Minini’s products are subject to severe internal tests and come with test certificates) and if it is a question of interpreting and satisfying the specificity of the single applications or daily needs of the users.
The latest solutions of the Brescia concern - presented “live” and in the words of Sebastiano Minini during the latest edition of Ipack-Ima - bear witness of it.

Eternit goodbye - Plate Bag is the Minini response to a complex and delicate problem such as decontamination of asbestos. As Sebastiano Minini explains “It is a high performance PP packaging, devised specifically for disposing of slabs and tubes of eternit”. An article hence that is particularly critical to treat, if one thinks that not only have the items in asbestos-cement, universally known by the name of the producer company (the Swiss concern Eternit SA) shown themselves to be not eternal as one might have supposed from the name, but they have revealed themselves to be highly damaging in terms of health and the environment. In the event of breakage of deterioration, eternit products in fact give off asbestos fibres, the effect of which in the development of serious tumoral pathologies has been vastly documented. “And yet all the same even today - Minini goes on to say - you can still see slabs or tubes of eternit packed in cellophane, using wood pallets or adhesive tape, systems that are not up to the required safety standards. With our solution though the material is placed inside a bag, in turn contained in another bag, homologated UN 13H3/Y and hence conforming to ADR standards that regulate the transportation of dangerous substances at international level. Protected by the double packaging the material is not released from the same, unless the container is intentionally torn, thus avoiding the risk of contamination of the surrounding environment”.
Impeccable in terms of safety, Plate Bag has been designed to ensure max practicality of use: it is available in various formats, has a special box shape (similar to the shape of the eternity slabs), it does not require the use of pallets for being transported and is fitted with special braces so as to facilitate handling with cranes and forklifts.

Palletless - Also fruit of an analogous approach where the drive to innovation comes from a careful analysis of the actual needs of the market, if not also by the daily practise of the users, the original concept at the basis of the latest Minini creation, given a preview presentation at Ipack-Ima. It is in particular a bag with a semi-integrated structure in rigid plastic that enables handling and shifting without having to resort to pallets. “The big bag - Minini explains - is a complete packaging item in itself and in theory does not require any sort of handling support (film, straps or as said pallets). Practically though nearly all users use the big bag in combination with a wood pallet, that facilitates positioning and transportation, keeping the item providentially off the ground. Right from noticing this habitual use form we started off developing the new “palletless” concept”. The packaging is made up of a traditional bag and a sheet of polypropylene, applicable to the base of the big bag and with sheaths for lodging the two rigid plastic corner pieces. “It is the corner pieces - Minini goes on to say - that substitute the pallet, supporting the packaging and keeping it off the ground, at a distance that enables the forks of the forklift to be inserted and to ease its loading onto trucks or storage in containers”. A case the latter in which the Minini solution is seen to be particularly interesting. The FAO standards on the storage of foodstuff in containers in fact lays down the fumigation of the wood pallets as an obligatory phytosanitary measure, a process leading to the elimination of any harmful organism but fairly costly. “Our solution, as well as making fumigation superfluous, presents the advantages of a semi-integrated structure. This means that all one need do is to remove the lower part with the sheath and corner piece to use the “palletless” as a normal bag, of which it has all the usual functions as well as being totally recyclable”.

“Bending” to meet every need
Previewed at the recent Ipack-Ima, Cargo Fold 700 by Martini Alfredo is completely foldable. It is functional, modular and flexible and can save up to 63% space (when folded): in practice, a stack of three open containers is equal in height to eight folded containers, with clear advantages for the storage and transit of empty boxes.

Strong and hygienic - Easy to assemble (the latches are fully visible), Cargo Fold 700 (offered in polyethylene or polypropylene) has especially smooth walls, guaranteeing max hygiene of the container. As it comes without any metal inserts, the box can also be fully recycled and easy to dissemble when replacing damaged parts.
Considerable attention has also been paid to “color details”: the container with intact walls (for industrial use) is grey and the one with perforated walls, for carrying fruit and vegetables, is green, while all the accessories (feet, beams, hinges, latches) are black, for identifying easily and immediately.

A qualità choice - Cargo Fold 700 (which can be fitted with card holders on all its walls) comes in various models: intact or perforated walls and base, industrial or food version, four feet, two or three beams for heavy loads. A version with door is also available for easing manual loading and unloading of the contents.
Cargo Fold 700 is the result of intense work of the R&D centre of the Lombard concern (based at Turate, CO), benchmark for industrial containers and pallets in selected plastics, capable of ensuring high performance in terms of resistance and lifespan.

Chain for special needs
A chain without lubricants that also works in water: la Chaîne Verte® by Sedis (Troyes Cedex, F), under the name “green chain”, finds application in damp environments, for transporting food products in clean area or where maintenance is dangerous or impossible, and in general for the transport of all those goods that fear pollution by lubricants.
As well as that Chaîne Verte® is ideal for use as a lifting chain and in all those work areas where the risk of fire is high. As well as a greater reliability of the chain (the performance of which no longer depends on maintenance), advantages include the elimination of pollution and the reduction of maintenance costs, corrosion resistance and a guarantee of max safety. The temperature of use of the standard version varies from -30 to +80 °C, but models are available for special needs.

Transport packaging
A big name in the development and manufacture of plastic technical parts, Söhner Kunststofftechnik GmbH (Schwaigern, Heilbronn, D) has extended its range of reusable packaging systems with its Megapack line; these are new plastic foldable transportation units (1) with a high load capacity, that are now replacing various conventional packaging items for industrial use made in steel or latticework.

A safe solution - The Megapack folding system is available in different variants up to a base of 1800 x 1200 mm. Coming in several models, all folding Megapack containers consist of three basic elements: the base pallet, the folding wall attachment and the cover plate (2). Assembly is fast and easy: The wall attachment are clamped into a catch groove in the pallet part and fastened with a draw-strap. You then only need to lower and fasten the cover. A further system locking unit provides for maximum security.

Less volume, more sturdiness - A substantial advantage of the system is constituted by the elimination of “empties”: pressing down on the folding walls the overall volume can be reduced from 50% to 80%.
The lesser volume entails space saving in the various transportation and storage phases.
It could be objected that, comparing the large plastic containers with those with a ribbed latticework structure, the latter can boast greater sturdiness; yet Söhner’s double-walled Twinsheet technology offers excellent performance: the Jumbo container (3), a variant on the Megapack system, has a Twinsheet double-wall attachment, certainly unusual in this type of proposal.
The containers can stand up to the toughest treatment, being made out of a light material with a high breaking strength.

Pallet & box

Pallet & box
Videoplastic SpA, Gorlago (BG) presents an interesting application of the box-pallet of the Boxlite range (a pallet and an injection moulded lid, and wall fixture made from a sheet of extruded polypropylene): a returnable packaging solution for car seats. Unique in its kind, the item has the advantage of being entirely in plastic, and hence resistant in time, light, easy to handle, stack and disassemble.
Compared to Boxlite, the pallet mould has been specially modified to be able to lodge the special centring and blocking system (this too in plastic, combing metal pins) of the seals, so that these are solidly anchored to the pallet. The solution is already being used by a car manufacturer that has type registered it, this in agreement with one of its main seat providers.
The Boxlite range is used in various industrial sectors: food, textile, parapharmaceuticals, automotive and consumer electronics both in Italy and abroad. The following formats are available: 400x600, 600x800, 600x1200, 800x1200, 1000x1200, 1200x1200 mm.

Stretchfilm
Polimeri Europa has developed the family of linear copolymers named Clearflex H&T for applications where a fine processability and high performance are a must. The range includes, among other features, Clearflex H&T CLH196, specially made for end-of-line applications as well as for flexible food packaging and barrier packs for oils and fat suspensions. It features a low density ethylene-hexene compolymer linear polythene, especially suited for producing high performance stretchfilm with flat head technology. The high properties of the film are to be attributed to a more even distribution of the comonomer in the macromolecular structure, the result of a synergical effect between proprietory catalysis and the polimerisation process.
The films produced with CLH196 hence show excellent prestretch features and a high gripping force (guaranteeing compactness and stability of the palletised load), added to which high processability and optical properties of transparency and surface brilliance.

Fasciatrice robotizzata

Robotised wrapping machine
Silkworm Turbo is the wrapping solution that enables the completely reliable running of high production lines. The system, fitted with rotating table and motorised press, enables the high speed wrapping on pallets of different sizes. The wrapping and the running of the innovatory prestretch enables the creation of a true and proper “cladding” personalised for all types of products.
The 1000 mm reel enables the complete wrapping with few overlaps of film and a lesser number of wrapping rotations. In the system installed up to now, Bema Automazioni Industriali (integrator of systems Elettric 80, Viano, RE) obtained an excellent quality of pallet wrap, achieving considerable saving in film consumptions, confirmed also by the same customer. The actual automatic change of the reel occurs in 30 seconds.

Legno, i pallet “approvati”

Wood, “approved” pallets
CONFORMITY The wood pallets supplied by Chep satisfy the severe dell’International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) standards on xylophagous wood eating insects. An intelligent solution for trans frontier trade.

In response to the standards introduced at world level for arresting the spread of wood eating insects, Chep (pallet and container pooling) provides Chep Plus PS pallets. Chep’s customers in the automotive sector and packed consumer goods, that ship to and from countries not part of the EU, among which Russia, Turkey and Ukraine have taken up their offer.

Spiny questions
Let’s take a look at the question taking a step back. In 2002, the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) approved new standards for the regulation of wood packaging in international trade. Objective of these standards, known under the initial ISPM-15, prevent the spread of vegetable parasites starting off from wood packaging material, including pallets.
“Chep is promoting a strong information campaign aimed at all its partners to explain the impact of the new standards: poorly treated and marked pallets for example risk not being accepted at customs. "In extreme cases - Mircea Catalina, VP, Automotive Service, Chep Europe states - the customs authorities can even decide to destroy both the pallets and the goods transported thereon, hence cooperation between all commercial partners becomes particularly important”.

An economical response
The ISPM-15 standards that regard the pallets in soft and hardwood establish specific treatment: for 30 minutes at an inner temperature for the wood of 56 °C, or fumigation with methyl bromide. Catalina in particular declared that Chep prefers thermal treatment, in line with the environmental commitments of the company. The Chep Plus PS pallets are hence marked in a manner conforming to ISPM-15 standards and bear on the side of the platform the country of origin, the type of treatment applied and the registration code that shows the approval of the treatment. Due to these requisites, the suppliers that use pallets for one-way trips have to foot higher fees and possible situations where the pallets run out.
“The producers’ adherence to IPPC standards is causing an increase in the costs of heat treated packaging for one-way trips.
The Chep Plus PS pallets - Catalina points out - offer the market an effective solution for satisfying the demand for pallets conforming to IPPC standards, at the same time guaranteeing the advantages of our model of pooling”.
