- I contenitori di cellulosa accoppiata, dopo alcuni anni negativi in fatto di produzione in peso (legati alla perdita di partecipazione nel settore latte oltre che alla riduzione del peso medio), si avviano a concludere l’anno con un lieve incremento (+0,8%): la crescita dipende, da un lato, da un’inversione di tendenza in relazione al loro peso medio e, dall’altro, dall’adozione di questa soluzione di imballaggio in alcuni settori eccentrici rispetto all'impiego tradizionale (pet food, frutta sciroppata);

Materials: results and forecasts

Produced by the Istituto Italiano Imballaggio Studies Office, here are the end-year interim results for the various types of packaging materials (with production trends expressed in weight). These data show how, over the course of 2002, the entire sector has suffered from the continued postponement of the recovery of the Italian and world economy.

The Istituto Italiano Imballaggio drafted its interim results for 2002 and forecasts for 2003 in mid-November (drawn up on the basis of the quarterly monitoring of the overall market situation of the packaging mix seen in terms of the relative sectors of use), which we publish here as the first step in an in-depth look at the market. The Institute points to the substantial agreement between the
data expressed by both Prometeia and Confindustria on a general economic level: modest growth in Italian GDP (0.6%-0.8%) and a negative trend in industrial production, which Prometeia puts at -0.8%.
With regard to the packaging sector, 2002 seems to have closed with slight growth in production by weight (+0.8%). It should be pointed out that the calculation doesn't include the figures for the pallet sector that, alone, grew by more than 10% as a result of the on-going process of replacing the existing returnable pallets in circulation with EPAL pallets.
The forecasts would lead one to expect a turn-around in the economy in 2003: if so, the packaging sector should grow by 3-3.5%.

Market trends
The trends seen in the packaging materials market in 2002 were quite different depending on the individual segments. Here are a few data.
• Steel packaging ended 2002 with a moderate drop (2%) thanks to good export figures which lessened the effect of the major fall in domestic sales. This negative trend is the result of a drop in demand for industrial packaging and poor seasonal results of tomato derivatives (the main end-user of tin containers).
• Aluminium packaging are expected to have suffered a fall of 1-1,5%: in this area of the market, drink cans and a few items of foil packaging are the only segments that remain pretty much stable.
• As for cellulose packaging, the growth trend is essentially linked to the Italian market and is expected to close the year with a slight rise (+1.5%), after many years of interesting growth rates.
- Representing 70% of the cellulose packaging area, corrugated cardboard is the main driving force behind the global trend for this area.
- Laminated cellulose containers are likely to end the year with a slight increase (+0,8%), after several negative years in terms of production weight (linked to the loss of its role in the milk sector and a reduction in mean weights). This is due partly to a reversal in the trend for lower mean weights and the adoption of this packaging solution in certain sectors, unusual if compared to their traditional use (pet-food, fruit in syrup, etc.).
• The flexible packaging sector (converting) should see growth of +2%, thanks to favorable trends in exports (representing 45% of production) and an Italian market that's basically stable.
• As for plastic packaging, 2002 should see limited growth (about +1.5%). Italian and foreign sales have much the same trends. The goods area with the best performance is that of bottles for liquid foods, followed by packaging for cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
• With regard to glass packaging (bottles, jars and flacons in general), it's felt that 2002 should end with limited growth in output (0.5-1%).
More specifically, there is growth of 1-1.5% in domestic sales that, though modest, is driven by the positive evolution of the beverage sector: although less brilliant than in 2001, the trend is for progressive growth.
• Wooden packaging has seen about 4% growth, due exclusively to the rise in production in weight of pallets. If, however, one just considers crates for fresh produce and industrial packaging, a slight downturn in output emerges compared to 2001 figures.

Brevi dall'Istituto Italiano Imballaggio

- il 5 marzo, al pomeriggio, si terrà un incontro volto ad illustrare le figure professionali emergenti nel settore del packaging. Si parlerà della figura del tecnico commerciale dell'azienda produttrice di packaging, analizzandone mansioni, formazione e prospettive. Il quadro sarà completato descrivendo lo sviluppo del reparto progettazione packaging in aziende multinazionali;

Bulletin from the Italian Packaging Institute
• Oscar - With applications welcome up to December, the 2003 edition of the Italian Packaging Oscars intends to reward the value of the design and message of individual packaging concepts without neglecting details such as environment, technology and service which will be awarded with the traditional Special Prizes. The winners will be announced at the end of May at a general meeting of the Institute’s members, but all the products which have reached the finals will be housed in a reserved space, set up in pavilion 14/2, at Ipack-Ima (Milan 4/8 March 2003). Generally speaking, we can report that applications from companies operating in the food and beverages sectors have been particularly numerous, proof of its dynamic nature. But in the field of domestic detergents too the number of applications has gone up compared to the last two editions of the exhibition. And if the pharmaceutical companies have always been more zealous in overhauling their concepts, the packaging, transport and logistics division has proved to be less vibrant.

• Working partnerships - Among the Institute’s initiatives, with the Ipack-Ima trade fair there is a renewed synergy with the organisation of a technological exhibition, aimed at offering exhibitors and visitors a programme of conferences and meetings. The initiatives, supervised by the Institute, will take place at “SpazioIncontri” adjacent to the Institute’s stand, and will adopt the following timetable:
- on the 5th March in the afternoon there will be a meeting aimed at illustrating emerging professional figures in the packaging sector. The role of the packaging manufacturer commercial technician will be described, analysing functions, training and prospects. The picture will be completed with a description of the development of the packaging design department in multinational companies;
- on the 6th of March the first International EPIC (European Packaging Institutes Consortium) Congress is planned. It will be officially presented on this occasion and its purposes and aims will be explained. On the agenda there are also themes linked to legislation, regulation and environmental issues not to mention European trends and innovations.
- on the 7th of March in the afternoon the subject of debate will be “market research” as a tool of development for packaging. A curious demo, involving consumers in choice of pack, will end the programme.
