La parola all’autore «Oggi l’uomo diventa sempre più simile alle macchine che produce, tanto da identificarsi addirittura con esse. Le “macchine”, i robot, sono sempre più simili all’uomo e l’uomo stesso, per una sorta di simbiosi, diventa sempre più macchina. Il pericolo è che la macchina prenda il sopravvento sull’uomo, che l’uomo diventi sempre più sub-ordinato alle macchine, rischiando di perdere la sua vera essenza: l’anima. Il corpo rappresenta la parte materiale e deperibile dell’uomo, quella che più avverte le passioni umane: il potere, il denaro, il possesso delle cose e delle persone, l’eros ecc. Ma l’uomo, a mio avviso, è soprattutto spirito, che alberga nel corpo e vive in eterno. Diversamente, un uomo con una gamba sola o un braccio solo sarebbe meno uomo? Quindi la nostra vera essenza sta in noi stessi, ed è ciò che mi fa dire, ancora una volta, che “essere uomo è vincere la natura che ci contiene”». L’opera di Musella, che da sempre guarda all’Uomo come a un insieme coerente di tre elementi fondamentali - corpo, mente (o intelletto) e creatività (o spirito) - intende puntualizzare proprio questo aspetto. Antonio Musella nasce a Napoli, dove compie gli studi artistici. Dal 1964, vive e lavora a Milano, città che ospita la sua prima personale nel 1973 presso la Galleria d'arte Avanguardia 2. Come scriveva allora Spartaco Balestrieri: «... fra gli intellettuali immigrati al nord, Musella è certamente uno degli artisti più restii all'esibizione e all'arrampicata mercantile… e l’arte, che è sempre difficile, ancor più lo diventa nelle sue particolari opere senza titolo». Il suo "curriculum" artistico si divide in due "grandi periodi”: il primo (1964/1985), caratterizzato da opere di carattere neofigurativo/concettuale e il secondo (1985/1998) che lo vede impegnato in nuove ricerche esclusivamente concettuali. Nel 1998, con l'installazione al Policlinico di Monza della grande scultura in pietra nello "Spazio meditativo" progettata su richiesta dalla proprietà, la sua opera si unifica in una "terza via" dove Progetto, Soggetto e Concetto, Materia, Intelletto e Creatività esprimono l'unità nella molteplicità: nel millennio dominato dalla globalità, al centro dell'Universo conosciuto ci dovrà essere sempre l'Uomo. Membro di giurie di premi di pittura e scultura, attualmente è Art Director de L’Officina dell’Arte. Tra le molte mostre e installazioni di opere di grandi dimensioni, ricordiamo le due più recenti: • 2005 - “L’uomo il tempo e la storia”, Masseria La Ficazzana, Salve (LE); • 2006 - “Io universo”, destinata al Centro Oncologico Europeo, dopo la Mostra Antologica ai Caselli Daziari di Porta Venezia (Milano) in collaborazione con Il Comune di Milano Zona 3. A word from the author «Today man is becoming ever similar to the machines he produces, to the point of even identifying with the same. The “machines”, the robots are evermore similar to man, while man, through a sort of symbiosis, is becoming evermore machinelike. The danger is that the machine gains the upper hand, that man becomes evermore subordinated to the machine, risking the loss of his very essence: his soul. The body stands as the material, perishable part of man, that which most feels human passions: power, money, possession of things and people, sexual drive etc. But to my mind man is aboveall spirit, that is housed by the body and that lives eternally. Otherwise would we not consider a man missing an arm or a leg as a lesser man? Hence our real essence lies within ourselves, and it is what makes me once again say that “being man means subduing the nature that contains us”». Musella’s work, that has always seen Man as a coherent whole made up of three fundamental elements – body, mind (or intellect) and creativity (or spirit) – wishes to highlight this very point. Antonio Musella was born in Naples, where he completed his art studies. As Spartaco Balestrieri at that time wrote: «… among the southern Italian intellectuals emigrated to northern Italy, Musella is certainly one of the artists most reluctant to exhibit and get involved in mercantile clambering… and art, that is always difficult, becomes all the more so in his particular works without titles». His artistic curriculum is divided into two “great periods”: the first (1964/1985), featuring neofigurative/conceptual works and the second (1985/1998) that sees him committed to following a new exclusively conceptual vein. In 1998, with the installation at the Monza Policlinico of the huge stone sculpture “Meditative space” created on the request of the owners, his work combines to form a “third way” where Project, Subject and Concept, Material, Intellect and Creativity express unity through multiplicity: in the millennium dominated by globalness, Man must take up his position at the centre of the known universe.
