Franco Torriani | | | | Antonio Carena Nasce nel 1925 a Rivoli (TO), dove vive e lavora. | | | | | Writings on his work [...] The sky theme has become the obsessive and appealing leitmotif of Carenas work, that thanks to the subject represented has led to the coining of the neologisms sky-ism, skying, and clouding and yet others, the painter declaredly availing himself of the technical vocation of a coachwork painter... Thus with light and color transmitted onto the canvas by way of an airbrush, Carena has created the artifice of the foreground sky object , offering itself up as an emotional draw to the onlooker, an evocation of the tangible and the impalpable at one and the same moment. The images flow and change in a continuum that does not stop at the form of the cube or parallelepiped, hence the painting is never seen to be quite finished, leaving things open to a continuous reinvention [...] Marisa Vescovo [...] Carena delivers us the sky in its clear blue immensity and in its fundamental purity, seemingly at the apex of its glory. The sky crossed by clouds that appear like haunting mirages. The sky with fleets of sails and kites in formation. In the years of work centring on the same subject were his tool loved to bask in the same while taking on various approaches, the artist has been able to create a true and proper myth of aerial space. But the sky that is offered up to us is of the abstract sort. Distant from any iconography, its structure reveals a geometry that is at one and the same time rigorous and sensitive [...] André Verdet [...] Above false, shiny sheets of real shiny plastic, luminously reflecting, lie skies containing soft, white clouds, hazing into a delicate clear blue, though profaned by simulated rents, by hypothetical gashes made to insert metal biceps or other fictitious lacerations or twistings. These are the skies 1965 by Antonio Carena [...] Edoardo Sanguineti [...] These works (Carenas paintings, E.n.) with subtle means offer structural rays that participate in a possible order married to new postulates. They are at the antipodes of the archeologisms happily denounced by Dali as one of the ills of our century, and they reassure as to the continuity of that which our civilisations have been able to safeguard in depth, this beyond all comfortable social-intellectual theories, that are none other than the possibility of mediocrity [...] Michel Tapié [...] Carenas skies are a mode of working. He makes skies, he doesnt paint them, he constructs them [...] Paolo Fossati [...] The appropriation of the sky, the place of air and light, marked - from Rembrandt to De La Tour - the conquest of the space where angels fly. These are corners, stretches between grates, interior atmospheres with doors and windows, and amidst the skies, vaults and candelabras that in painting too play out the contest between divine light and earthly light. And the game, Antonio Carena tells us, is certainly not over[...] Franco Torriani | |
