Surface coatings
Quality wins through

ADDED VALUE CHOICES Impreglon Italia has managed to maintain a competitive position and to broaden its own field of action aiming at the quality of industrial coating proposed and on speedy delivery times. At the basis of its success too the rationalisation of the production flows. Daniela Binario

Initially set up as an internal division for creating coatings within a German machine builder, Impreglon AG soon turned into a service company active at international level. Over the years, it has made good use of this experience, creating customised solutions for a broad array of industrial sectors, and is capable of optimising the efficiency of production lines, reducing maintenance operations and prolonging the life of the machines, thus guaranteeing customers important savings in time and economic resources. Impreglon Italia, present in Italy since 1982 and that became part of the Impreglon network in 1997 through a franchising contract, has aimed at all-round quality, an approach that has turned out to be a successful one. The company has not only believed in the plus points of a technology but also in its own capacity to transmit to its customers the added value of a fluoropolymer coating, efforts that have been fully rewarded by the market.
As Luca Garone, sole director of Impreglon Italia Srl told us - «In our sector quality is something that goes without saying: we have to aboveall guarantee the duration of the coating, that gives a real added value to the product it is applied to, but also the repeatability of the supply. In Impreglon what is more, the quality “starts from within”, to the point where last February Moody International reconfirmed our concern’s UNI EN ISO 9001:2000 certification for another three years: an important acknowledgement that bears witness to the validity of our optimised production flow, that among other things has allowed us to considerably contain costs. This further effort to rationalisation in 2005 has enabled us to increase sales in Italy by 8%, reaching a turnover of 2 million Euros, that should reach 2.3 million at the end of 2006».
A growth this that has among other things been borne up by preceding investments. Strong in the field of fluoropolymer coatings, the Lainate (MI) based concern in 2004 in fact equipped itself with systems for plasma coating, thus also extending its range of action to the paper converting and to the printing industry, where machine components need metalisation processing, carried out by Impreglon through thermospraying (arc or powder).

Technology makes the difference
«As far as anticorrosion is concerned, fluoropolymer coating is more costly than galvanic coating, generally zinc or nickel based and capable of offering good anticorrosion properties. But - as Garone states - the performance is certainly not the same. Our process in fact guarantees greater anticorrosion properties compared to any type of metal, and the gap in terms of cost is progressively closing due to the increase in the price of metals and frequent difficulty in procuring the same. To make fluoropolymer coating even more competitive, we are also trying to automate the specific stages production cycle where this is possible». Incidentally, the coating starts with the cleaning of the piece to be treated, important for the subsequent baking/polymerisation phase. As the entrepreneur states «Metal objects in fact release impurities that could damage the products surfaces when they are subjected to high temperatures.
To avoid this, the customer’s piece is introduced into our ovens for specific thermal treatment. At this point we proceed with sanding, that helps to create a suitable roughness, providing an excellent grip for the polymer, to finish off with spraying and polymerisation. The coatings can be monolayer (with a single baking) or two or three layer (with intermediary drying and baking). The baking temperatures of the fluoropolymers vary from a min. of 180 to a maximum of 420 °C, while the coatings when used resists to maximum temperatures of 280 °C, but we can reach peaks of 300 °C».

Research and service
To orient the concerns in the choice of the coating best suited to each and every application, Impreglon offers a precious consultancy service. “It’s up to our customers - Garone states - to test the real efficiency of our coating on their systems. In many occasions in fact working conditions are influenced by the hardness of the water or the type of sugars contained in the foodstuffs as well as climate, temperature, pressure… Our service at any rate does not stop here. The capacity to respond to the changing demands of the market in fact needs a continuous update and a strong orientation to R&D. On the basis of specific requests (as for example sensitivity to ecological factors or greater performance in terms of antiadherence) we are in fact devising new durable non-stick coatings and testing new silicons, that have high non-stick properties, as well as special resins capable of increasing surface hardness. The challenge that lies before us consists in finding products that offer higher non-stick properties and durability at the same time: a challenge that we have taken on with commitment and enthusiasm, that has already led to our devising an innovatory formulation that is extremely scratch-resistant».

Enhance the surfaces
There are four ranges of exclusive Impreglon coatings (TempCoat, PlasmaCoat, ChemCoat and MagnaCoat) that satisfy the most varied needs of the sectors: food; packaging; graphics and print; pumps, valves and compressors; non wovens and adhesive tape; plastics and rubber; chemicals and mechanical engineering in general…
Obviously with different compositions, the coatings enable improved performance of components and, following on from this, the work processes. Here follows a synthesis of the main characteristics that are improved on.
Non-stick - Using special polymers hydrophobic surfaces are obtained that prevent substances sticking to the metal such as: adhesives, rubber, glue, ink, lacquers, plastics, fabric, skin and foodstuffs.
Flow - Metals, plastic, paper and foodstuffs are transported a lot easier in the production and packaging lines when the surfaces are coated with fluoroplastic materials (with high flow properties). The coating can be enriched with a solid lubricant.
Traction - The structural and roughness parameters of the surfaces can be modified combining processes and suited coating materials. Sheets or tapes in fabric, plastic, paper and other materials can thus be transported in a more efficient manner and with less line stoppages.
Toughness - Coating the surface with various metal or ceramics, one can improve the resistance to wear and the durability of the same, aboveall in the presence of abrasive materials such as paper and fabrics.
Anticorrosive protection - Thanks to the application of protective coatings with zero porousness, the formation of rust is avoided and the resistance to aggressive acids and caustic solutions is improved.
Resistance to wear - Coating the surfaces with combinations of fluropolymers, metals or ceramics, the surface hardness is increased, reducing the friction between the various materials.
