Chiara Guidi A word from the critic The assertion is already in the work we read. The assertion is already in the work we see. Thus, from the sign, a sign that is word, Ben Vautier, one of the founders of Fluxus and artist active in the great movements of the Second Avante Garde, has created his linguistic universe. An authentic private albeit worldly, artistic and philosophical cosmos, a cosmos launched out into the world, a cosmos of painting with Vautier as a reference point, in an act of autocertification that has become written word. The word records, describes and tells. The word verbalises questions, possibilities, replies, truths, negations, contradictions, art and life, life and art. The immanence is in the word and the word is written in his handwriting. A broad, round white, italic, minute handwriting on a black background, a handwriting that has always asserted his identity, or that is the principles contained within it; bearing witness to the same desire to be word, in time the word has never changed, in its grammar, in its imperative, in its being, in its definition, and of things different it has only known color (red, yellows, fluorescent colors, the hues of sprays, glitter). We could say that Ben has never represented the world, he has only seen it and only asserted what it is - an intellectual assertion in the written, handwritten word that at the very same moment negates what it strives to assert. Ben has declared this, and each time he has signed his work, placed his mark on his creations, on art, on life, he has covered things and indeed communication itself with thoughts and definitions of objects, giving a written account his actions, he has made slams and backhanders literate. He has worked on external shape while at the same time working on the implicit sense of things; he has worked on signifier and signified as well as on container and content. But then... Ben has already said all this. Chiara Guidi | |
