Pepperl+Fuchs Elcon è cresciuta molto negli ultimi cinque anni, grazie a una coraggiosa politica di acquisizioni. E ora, sulla scia del successo già ottenuto nell’automazione di processo, punta a giocare un ruolo fondamentale anche nella Factory Automation.

In un momento di rallentamento della crescita del mercato, Pepperl+Fuchs Elcon non è stata certo a guardare, e ha continuato a investire sia in ricerca e sviluppo sia nella strada delle acquisizioni, per potersi proporre come fornitore di soluzioni chiavi in mano.
Nel corso di un incontro stampa, svoltosi a Milano lo scorso ottobre, è stato infatti annunciato il completamento del processo di integrazione dei prodotti delle varie società acquisite negli ultimi anni - a partire dalla Elcon Instruments (automazione di processo) fino ad arrivare alla Micro Switch di Honeywell (sensori induttivi e fotoelettrici) e alla Visolux (sensori ottici e fotoelettrici) - che hanno permesso all’azienda di offrire a catalogo più di 8.000 articoli. La società opera attraverso due divisioni, PA e FA, dedicate rispettivamente alla Process Automation e alla Factory Automation. Ma è proprio quest'ultima a offrire maggiori opportunità di sviluppo, grazie anche al continuo scambio di informazioni tecniche con la casa madre tedesca di Mannheim.
Una cosa è certa: Pepperl+Fuchs Elcon, già nota nel campo dell’automazione di processo, ha intenzione di diventare uno dei principali interlocutori anche nell’automazione di fabbrica.
E - pur considerando che dovrà confrontarsi con realtà di maggiori dimensioni – a giudicare dalle strategie e dai prodotti recentemente lanciati, ha tutte le carte in regola per riuscirci.
La mission aziendale
A questo proposito, Charles Hertogh, amministratore delegato della filiale italiana con sede a Mezzago (MI), ha evidenziato come la mission aziendale sia rivolta alla sensoristica e alle sue applicazioni industriali, supportata da un efficiente customer service.
"Il nostro obiettivo - spiega Hertogh – è quello di assicurare alla clientela tutto il sostegno necessario: dalla progettazione specifica alla messa in servizio, compresa l’assistenza pre e post vendita. Senza contare che siamo in grado di sviluppare e produrre prodotti specifici per il nostro mercato di riferimento: a Mezzago è infatti operativo un moderno centro di ricerca e sviluppo. Per migliorare ulteriormente il servizio, abbiamo anche suddiviso il nostro business in diverse “branch”. Il passo successivo, che testimonia la razionalizzazione delle attività, è stata la creazione di cataloghi specifici in funzione del settore di utilizzo, così da orientare al meglio i nostri clienti, facilitandone la consultazione".
Ma vediamo quali conseguenze hanno avuto le recenti acquisizioni per la divisione FA.
Factory Automation
"La divisione FA - che si rivolge in particolare al settore automotive, chimico-farmaceutico, imballaggio, movimentazione, imbottigliamento, building automation, alimentare ed elettronica - è, per Pepperl + Fuchs Elcon, un’azienda nell’azienda". Così esordisce Giacomo Volpe, il responsabile vendite che ha maturato, sempre all’interno del gruppo, una notevole esperienza in campo tecnico.
"Grazie al merging con Visolux – spiega Volpe – possiamo offrire una gamma davvero ampia di fotocellule (attualmente sono 1.000 le pagine a catalogo), e in grado di soddisfare anche le applicazioni più gravose. Questa operazione ha inoltre consentito di integrare la nostra offerta di sensori (induttivi, capacitivi, magnetici e ad ultrasuoni) con i sensori ottici per porte, cancelli e ascensori di Visolux. Con l’ingresso di Micro Switch (marchio noto per la produzione delle fotocellule Proximity) – prosegue ancora Volpe - possiamo invece proporre una serie di sensori e fotocellulle omologati per il mercato americano, capaci di resistere alle alte temperature o pressioni, nonché ai getti di vapore. I vantaggi per i clienti che esportano in America sono evidenti, dato che possono così beneficiare di dispositivi muniti di certificazione UL e CSA".
Grazie a questo nuovo assetto Pepperl+Fuchs Elcon diventa dunque un fornitore globale e, soprattutto, in grado di proporre un enorme ventaglio di soluzioni. Ha infatti sviluppato anche sensori ad ultrasuoni, encoders incrementali, sistemi di identificazione nonché accessori e sistemi di sensori quali le interfacce AS-i.
Comunicazione in “campo”
AS-Interface (actuator - sensor interface) - messa a punto da un consorzio di società, alla cui presidenza è stato chiamato proprio Giacomo Volpe - rappresenta una delle soluzioni più innovative nell’ambito del settore dei bus di campo, in quanto consente di connettere, in modo semplice, sensori e attuatori con un fieldbus. AS-i è un sistema aperto, accettato in tutto il mondo, la cui sicurezza è garantita da uno standard EN e IEC che ne certifica le sue caratteristiche. E i vantaggi sono notevoli.
Innanzitutto, le soluzioni di cablaggio con tecnologia a bus di campo consentono di risparmiare l’installazione di chilometri di cavo, ma vanno considerate anche la velocità di progettazione e la semplicità di realizzazione e aggiornamento degli schemi elettrici. Inoltre, grazie al semplice collegamento di un cavo unico e alla facilità di connessione dei diversi moduli AS-i, diminuiscono i tempi di cablaggio nella realizzazione degli impianti.
"Ma ciò che è più importante – fa notare Volpe – è che le macchine equipaggiate con il sistema AS-i consentono l’interconnessione a bus di campo superiori come Devicenet, Profibus, Interbus, Canbus, Modbus ed altri, tramite un nostro gateway". Non a caso, in un’ottica globale del business, i sistemi Pepperl+Fuchs Elcon possono interfacciarsi a sistemi di livello superiore o addirittura con sistemi forniti da altri produttori.
"In pratica, siamo in grado di offrire - sottolinea Ezio Brambilla, Communication & marketing manager della società di Mezzago – tutto ciò che serve a realizzare un’apposita linea di comunicazione in campo". Ma l’azienda si spinge anche oltre. "Organizziamo diversi corsi di formazione, sia per migliorare la conoscenza dei nostri prodotti e ottimizzarne l'impiego, sia per approfondire particolari tematiche o specifiche applicazioni tecniche, anche su input dei nostri clienti. Il prossimo anno, ad esempio, abbiamo in programma cinque corsi sui sensori ad ultrasuoni.
E sempre nel 2003, la nostra attività di promozione ci vedrà impegnati nella realizzazione di valigette e kit demo, ma anche nella creazione di libri tecnici. Infatti, a luglio del prossimo anno contiamo di pubblicare un volume sul tema della sicurezza intrinseca e proseguiremo con la pubblicazione di FA News (il n° 0 viene presentato in occasione dell'imminente BIAS)".
Process Automation
Anche l’integrazione della gamma Elcon Instruments con quella di Pepperl+Fuchs è avvenuta con successo. "E l'operazione - conferma il direttore della divisione Process Automation, Giovanni Padovan - è stata ancor più significativa se si considera che, in gioco, c'erano le produzioni di due aziende concorrenti".
La divisione PA fornisce soluzioni tecniche per la sicurezza intrinseca, in particolare sensori di livello (misurazione del livello raggiunto e misurazione continua), barriere point to point, sistemi I/O remotati e barriere bus to bus. In questo ambito, l'innovazione di prodotto riguarda il Powering e Interconnecting fieldbus, il nuovo sistema I/O remotato (HiD 3000), per passare poi agli indicatori digitali, timer, tachimetri, sirene fino ai misuratori e interruttori di livello.
Un portafoglio completo di soluzioni dunque che, precisa Padovan "ci consente di operare da una posizione di forza e di coprire il 75% del mercato".

Automation signals
Pepperl+Fuchs Elcon has grown a great deal in the last five years thanks to a courageous purchasing policy. And now, in the wake of the success it already had in process automation, it aims to play a fundamental role in Factory Automation too.

At a time when market growth is slowing down, Pepperl+Fuchs Elcon certainly hasn’t been sitting watching on the sidelines and has continued to invest in both research and development and purchasing, in order to be able to propose itself as the supplier of turnkey solutions.
During a press conference, which took place in Milan last October, the completion of the process of integrating the products of various companies acquired in the last few years was announced - starting with Elcon Instruments (process automation) and finishing with Honeywell’s Micro Switch (inductive and photoelectric sensors) and Visolux (optic and photoelectric sensors) - which have allowed the company to offer a catalogue containing more than 8,000 articles.
The company operates through two divisions, PA and FA, dedicated respectively to Process Automation and Factory Automation. But it is precisely the latter which offers better development opportunities, thanks also to the continuous exchange of technical information with the German head office in Mannheim.
One thing is sure: Pepperl+Fuchs Elcon, already well-known in the field of process automation, intends to become one of the principal interlocutors in factory automation too. And - though taking into account that it will have to deal with larger companies - to judge by its recently launched strategies and products, it has all the makings of a success.
The company mission
On this subject, Charles Hertogh, managing director of the Italian branch with headquarters in Mezzago (MI) has emphasised how the company mission is devoted to the field of sensors and their industrial application, supported by an efficient customer service.
“Our objective - explains Hertogh - is to ensure the customers have all the back-up they require: from specific planning to implementation, including pre- and post sales assistance. Calculate too that we are able to develop and produce specific products for our market of reference: indeed in Mezzago we have a fully operative research and development centre. In order to further improve service we have also subdivided our business into different branches. The next step, which bears witness to the rationalisation of our business, has been the creation of specific catalogues relating to each sector of use, so as to better orientate our clients, making consultation simpler”.
But let’s see what the consequences of recent purchases for the FA division are.
Factory Automation
“The FA division - which specifically addresses the automotive, chemical-pharmaceutical, packaging, goods handling, bottling, building automation, food and electronics sectors - is, for Pepperl+Fuchs Elcon, a company within a company”. These are the words of Giacomo Volpe, the sales manager who has gained significant technical experience within the group.
Thanks to the merger with Visolux - Volpe explains - we can offer a really wide range of photocells (currently the catalogue contains 1,000 pages) able to survive the most taxing applications. This operation has moreover allowed us to integrate our offer of sensors (inductive, capacitive, magnetic and ultrasonic) with Visolux optic sensors for doors, gates and lifts. With the entrance of Micro Switch (wellknown trademark for the production of Proximity photocells) - Volpe continues - we can instead propose a series of homologated sensors and photocells for the American market, able to resist high temperatures or pressures, as well as steam jets. The advantages for the customers who export to America are evident, given that they can thus benefit from appliances provided with UL and CSA certificates”. Thanks to this new asset Pepperl+Fuchs Elcon is therefore becoming a global supplier and is, above all, able to propose an enormous range of solutions. It has, in fact, developed ultrasonic sensors, incremental encoders and identification systems as well as sensor accessories and systems like the AS-i interfaces.
“Field” communication
AS-Interface (actuator - sensor interface) - developed by a consortium of companies, headed by Giacomo Volpe himself - represents one of the most innovative solutions in the field bus sector as it allows one to simply connect sensors and actuators with a field bus. AS-i is an open system, accepted all over the world, whose security is guaranteed by a standard EN and IEC which certifies its characteristics. And the advantages are notable.
First and foremost, cabling solutions with field bus technology save installing kilometres of cable but the speed of planning and the simplicity of producing and updating electrical diagrams should also be considered.
Moreover, thanks to the simple linking of a single cable and the ease of connecting various AS-i modules, cabling times in plant production diminish.
“But most importantly - notes Volpe - machines equipped with the AS-i system allow superior field bus connections such as Devicenet, Profibus, Interbus, Canbus, Modbus and others, through our gateway”.
It is no coincidence, from a global business perspective, that Pepperl+Fuchs Elcon systems can interface with superior systems or even systems supplied by other manufacturers.
“In practice we are able to offer - emphasises Ezio Brambilla, Communication & marketing manager of the Mezzago company - all that is required to produce a special line of field communication”. But the company is forging ahead even further. “We organise various training courses, both to improve the knowledge of our products and to optimise their use, and to elaborate particular themes or specific technical applications, at the clients’ request too. Next year for example we are planning five courses on sensors and ultrasonic devices.
And in 2003 our promotional activity will see us committed to the production of demo cases and kits as well as the creation of technical books.
Indeed in July next year we reckon to publish a volume on the topic of intrinsic security and we will follow this up with FA News (no. 0 will be presented at the forthcoming BIAS)”.
Process Automation
The integration of the Elcon Instruments and the Pepperl+Fuchs ranges has taken place successfully. “And the operation - confirms the director of the Process Automation division, Giovanni Padovan - was even more worthy of note if you consider that the production of two competitor companies was involved”.
The PA division supplies technical solutions for intrinsic security and in particular level sensors (measuring level reached and continuous measuring), point to point barriers, remote I/O and barrier bus to bus systems.
In this field product innovation regards the Powering and Interconnecting field bus, the new remote I/O system (HiD 3000), and the digital indicators, timers tachometers, sirens and level measurers and interrupters.
A complete portfolio of solutions then which, says Padovan “allows us to operate from a position of strength and to cover 75% of the market”.

Il trasparente non è’ più’ invisibile
Nel settore dell’imballaggio e dell’imbottigliamento si avverte spesso la necessità di rilevare materiali trasparenti e, per soddisfare questa esigenza, Pepperl+Fuchs Elcon propone le fotocellule MLV12, in grado di rilevare oggetti trasparenti, la presenza di vetro oppure di riconoscere se un oggetto è composto da vetro.
Si tratta di una linea di prodotti commercializzati fino a qualche anno fa sul mercato italiano con il marchio Visolux, società acquisita dalla casa madre tedesca.
I sensori della serie MLV12 54G sono fotocellule con un raggio di azione di 4 m e insensibili alla luce ambientale (persino in ambienti dotati di lampade con commutazione automatica per risparmio energetico). La serie, offerta con protezione IP67, consente di operare con dispositivi installati in modalità multipla e, in questo caso, il sensore garantisce l’assenza di interferenze tra le fotocellule. La soluzione messa a punto da Pepperl+Fuchs Elcon dispone di una modalità di autoapprendimento che semplifica la fase di riconoscimento da parte del sensore. In tal caso il dispositivo viene settato per rilevare un valore di contrasto specifico, sia attraverso la posizione meccanica dello switch, che attraverso un segnale esterno.

The transparent is no longer invisible
In the packaging and the bottling sector one often finds the need for scanning transparent materials and, to satisfy this need, Pepperl+Fuchs Elcon is offering its MLV12 photocel, capable of scanning transparent objects, the presence of glass or of recognising if the object is made of glass.
This is a line of products traded up to some years ago on the Italian market under the Visolux brand, company purchased by the German parent company. The MLV 12 54G sensors are photocels with a range of 4 m and insensitive to ambient light (even ambients with automatic switch energy saving lights). The series, offered with IP67 protection, enables one to work with devices installed in the multiple mode and, in this case, the sensor guarantees absence of interference between photocels. The solution devised by Pepperl+Fuchs Elcon has a self-learning mode that simplifies the sensor recognition phase. In this case the device is set to scan specific contrast values, this both by way of the mechanical position of the switch, as well as through an external signal.
