M&M News

Inspection systems for empty containers
For Belgioioso’s lines of Dolma pet food (part of the Mars Group), Parmacontrols has developed
a special version of its ControlCamera vision system: this inspects the empty cans, checking for dents around the edges, flattened flanges, deformed shape, sharp points on the flanges and upturned cans.

Very thin cans are often used for lines of pet food, as for the production of preserves in general, for obvious reasons of cost. When these are hit, however, the cans become dented, and this is made even more probable due to the high speeds of the latest production lines. As a general rule, dented cans cause stoppages lasting a few minutes for the filling machine or double seamer, with serious repercussions on the efficiency of the entire line. In fact, when working at a speed of 800 -100 cans per minute (73 and 99 mm in diameter, various height), just a few minutes are enough to reduce productivity levels significantly.
To avoid these problems, the ControlCamera vision system has been developed by Parmacontrols to monitor the empty cans travelling in single file on the conveyor belt, checking for ovalized cans, dents and defects in the flange, and to activate the ejection function as required. In particular, by rejecting cans with deformed flanges it’s possible to avoid the output of cans with defective seams that are not able to protect the product properly during that product’s given shelf-life.
After the first few weeks of using this system, running at 850 cpm, the customer has reported a very significant increase in the overall efficiency of the line. What’s more, the remote assistance service is particularly appreciated, thanks to which the Parmacontrols office can effect just-in-time interventions on the software.

The characteristics of the vision system
The ControlCamera is a vision system with TV camera, an optical box in the special case with brackets for installation alongside the conveyor belt and a manual recording device for the size change. The optical box includes a lighting system and adjustable assembly of one or more high resolution CCD TV cameras, as well as filtering devices and light and/or images concentrators as required. The electronics includes a dedicated PC in a special rack inside the separate control panel with its own continuity unit. The system is also equipped with a TFT monitor, touch-screen keyboard for operator interface and special Parmacontrols software, running in Windows, that can be adapted to each application with the development of specific algorithms.
The inspection specifications are: obvious denting of edges; flattened flanges (deformed by more than 1 mm vertically and 2 mm horizontally); ovalized cans (small diameter/big diameter < 0.95); bent or dented cans; sharp points on flanges (deformed
by more than 1 mm vertically
and 2 mm horizontally); upturned cans. The working speed of the ControlCamera varies to suit the type of control required; sensitivity is more than 0.01 mm and depends on the size of the inspection field and also the working precision - this is defined after tests with proper samples - varies to suit the type of control required.
The Parmacontrols vision system can be interfaced with the ControlData data detection software and connected via modem for remote assistance services. Moreover, several inspection systems can be installed in a local network, with a server to centralise the data and for remote setting.

Standard functions
Control of 1 or 2 ejectors (ControlEjector STD, Multisize, ten-sector Multipush) or the fault signal sent to an external system (fixed belt speed). Alarm with a machine stoppage after a set number of consecutive rejects (x : y logic), both for the main control and for any additional inspections. Display of the speed in metres/minute and packs/hour, of the total count of containers/total rejects by cause. Exclusion of the ejector either by software or with a selector switch on the control panel. System OK signal for connection to external logics. RS 232 optoinsulated interface for data download to external systems in order to compile statistics or to a local/remote printer. Red/green warning light tower for immediate indication
of current working status. Saving of settings for 20 different products.
Access to different setting menus via password on several levels (operator, manager, qualified technician).
