All metal at Essen
6,800 visitors from over 100 countries from all around the world (70% of the total being non German) arrived at Essen (D) for the fifth edition of Metpack. The fair dedicated to metal packaging, scheduled from 19th to 23rd April alongside Interpack, confirms its position as an international venue for the sector. The coming edition is scheduled for spring 2008.

At Bologna the 9th Cosmofarma show
From Friday 13th to Sunday 15th May Bologna hosted the ninth edition of Cosmofarma. The fair, organized by Sogecos, fielded 350 exhibitors of the pharmaceutical, parapharmaceutical, sanitary, natural, food/dietetic, dermocosmetic sectors and relative services over 24,000 m2.

Observatory on automation
“Observatory on the run of the automation and the industrial, civil and laboratory instrumentation market, and that of public utility networks and traffic in Italy”: this the name given by AssoAutomazione/Anie (electrotechnical and electronic concerns) and Gisi (instrumentation), to the joint report, presented last 28th April at Milan, updated to 2004. This seen against a market situation that is evermore dynamic and complex, featuring a broad variety of products and segments of destination, that against a generally ailing macroeconomic picture show a slight trend towards improvement.

Growing in China
The enormous potential of China as an outlet market for European products and technologies is known. Less known is the fact that there is a region that excels for its purchasing capacity, industrial development, foreign investments, politics to support exports, infrastructure and fiscal and financial advantages. It is the socalled “Greater Pearl River Delta”. An area of a little more than 40 million inhabitants where retail sales are 25% up on Shanghai and Peking put together, and where a GNP is generated equal to figures for Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines put together. The respective delegations spoke of the same to potential Italian investors during a seminar organised in Milan 25th May last by the China development organization Sviluppo Cina.

Biotechnology as enterprise
The results of the second phase of the Bioiniziativa scouting program were presented June 8th at Milan at Assolombarda.
Over 40 proposals for applications of biotechnologies deriving from regional research go to join the hundred or so chosen last year that are ready to be industrialised. This is a joint Assolombarda and Finlombarda undertaking organized by Assotec.

Finat in Italy
The latest convention of the world federation of pressure sensitive label producers, hosted and aided by the Italian members of Gipea-Assografici was held from 8th to 10th June at the luxurious Hotel Dino at Baveno, lake Maggiore.
And perhaps the location (along with the particularly favorable climate, the fine food and the good organization) favored the high participation of associates.
Introduced by vicepresident of Confindustria Paolo Pininfarina, the talks given tackled current questions, in line with the products on show at the spaces next to the convention hall. Full information in the next issue of Converting.

EU: third party beauty
Third party services for the cosmetics sector are growing evermore rapidly, bolstered by the speed of technological innovation and the super specialisation of production processes.
The members of the Gruppo Produzione Conto Terzi [Third Party Production Group], member of Unipro (115 associates) who promoted and organized the encounter, spoke about the same at Milan 8th June last along with the representatives of the ten eastern European Countries that recently joined the European Union.
Island of bliss? – Last 21st June the figures of the report on the overall market situation of the Unipro Business Study Centre were made public. Fabio Franchina, president of the Italian Association of Cosmetics Industries, welcomed the growth of cosmetics in Italy in 2004, drawn by exports, by the picking up of the professional channels and a stable growth of traditional channels.
All the same, it is aboveall the interim balances for the first half of 2005 and the forecasts for the end of the year that allow for optimism: overall turnover should mark a +2.2% and exports +3.5%.

Unionplast born again after 60 years
Historic event for Unionplast, the Confindustria association that represents the plastic converters, this in the year of its sixtieth anniversary.
The annual assembly held last 16th June in Milan in fact saw the confirmation of the merger with Assogomma, a long prepared and decided move that has the objective of forming a single pole, capable of greater influence on Italian economic policy. But there was more: after the renewal of appointments and expounding of the data showing the run of the segment - communicated and commented on with the usual clarity and intellectual frankness of President Franco Muscarà - the service suppliers put in a word.
Extremely interesting and in no way ritual the analyses of the technical rating of the associated companies, made by Eu-Ra on the basis of the Basle 2 parameters, the same going for the report on the recent opening to plastics of the London Metal Exchange.

Packaging gravure printing
ERA organised a presentation for press and public in the “P-DAYS Fachforum” on 17 June at the “P” event in Stuttgart, Germany. ERA is the leading international association of the gravure industry with some 130 member companies in Europe and abroad. The European Rotogravure Association represents publication, packaging and decorative gravure printing.
Producers of gravure printing presses for packaging have noted a rise in demand especially in Asia as well as in eastern European countries - and more recently in the Middle East.
