EXPORT +8%!

Italy powering ahead again

EXPORTS +8%. With this encouraging result for Exports the Italian packaging and wrapping machine segment closed 2004 on an upswing. Main outlet area: Europe. The first official data, published in April, with Ucima’s comments. E.P.

“Despite the difficulties due to the appreciation of the Euro and international geopolitical instability, the Italian packaging machine industry has been at Interpack stronger and more dynamic than ever. In fact at the end of 2004, the segment registered a growth in exports close to 8%, thus starting a turnaround in trends compared to the modest results for 2003 and prefiguring a 2005 that we hope will confirm this more than positive trend”.
This the “off the cuff” comment by Guido Corbella, general secretary of Ucima (Confindustria member association of Italian automatic machine builders) on the first official figures of the 2004 balance of the sector.
It is Europe that is giving the Italian concerns an injection of optimism, that during the last financial year increased sales on the “domestic” EU market by 11% and by a hefty +33% in Europe outside the Union. But not only that: Italian exports to Russia are up +10% and among the other important data, of note the more than positive run of sales to Turkey (+71%). All the same figures for the USA and China show a drop, probably due to the competition of producers that set their prices in dollars. “As always Interpack has shown a Made in Italy ‘of value’ – Corbella underlines with legitimate satisfaction – that over the last twenty years has grown almost threefold above the Italian average, scaling international markets and – only behind Germany – conquering the leadership in world trade”. A figure the latter, also confirmed by the latest readings from Copama (the confederation that groups together the world associations of the sector), according to which approx. 65% of the world trade in packaging machines is accounted for by Germany and Italy together, with a respective quota of 36% and 28%.
An equilibrium that is also reflected in the Düsseldorf international fair where the Italian Packaging Industry as usual accounted for the most sizeable presence after the hosts.
Of the 460 Italian exhibitors present, that all told cover a surface of over 30 thousand square metres, around 60% is made up of packaging machine producers. What is more, as much as 70% of Ucima associates have been present at Interpack 2005, an increase of 14% compared to the preceding 2002 edition.
The reasons for all this attention? Germany is not only the Italian industry’s main competitor throughout the world, it is also the third market of destination for Italian machines (that grew by a further +13.6% in the period 2002-2004), after the USA and France.
Lastly, Germany is currently the most receptive country of the EU, with a domestic market that - still according to Copama figures - in 2003 expressed a demand for close on 1,500 millions of Euros.
