When film means savings
Se.Co.Pack means Servizi Consulenze Packaging (Packaging Advisory Services), a company that's built up a name for itself as a problem solver in the packaging field with major and small users alike. Not only does it provide information, ideas and solutions to measure, but this Lombard company also sells "intelligent" products. Such as the stretch film for wrapping pallets (and machines) from Heikaus of Germany, proposed for their effectiveness and, especially, low-cost.
Elena Piccinelli

"Film producers know: heavy palletising materials "go" on the Italian market, unlike the other European countries and America. So much so that we supply the market with film some 25 - 35 microns thick, whereas we sell 15 micron versions for the same applications overseas. The reason for this gap is cultural: in Italy, the user believes that "the heavier the film, the more stable the load", while the only factor that's more important is the cost (in proportion to the quantity of materials used plus a higher Conai contribution). And that's not all. The use of thick stretch film makes for more tiring and potentially less secure use by the operator, as well as producing greater volumes that need to be disposed of at the end of their useful life."
Put briefly, these are the arguments that Leonardo Volpi, owner of Se.Co.Pack, uses to promote the "light" Heikaus films.
"It often happens," says the businessman, "that purchasing and technical offices have open-minded capable staff who, thanks to their professional qualifications and experience or because the company has its own quality system, can easily appreciate such a different proposal. Other times, however, we come up against the closed attitude of those who say "that's the way we've always done it" or with (understandable) diffidence for products that seem too advantageous." ,
At this point Volpi gets out a pen and paper and demonstrates with a few calculations and examples that he's not exaggerating the merits of his product. "It's not really my product, though," confesses Volpi. "I propose it only because I truly believe it to be competitive. To the point that I no longer deal in conventional films. Obviously, I don't propose this film for automatic wrapping with pre-stretching, which calls for film with a different set of properties. I do, however, recommend it for those with semi-automatic turntables and robots and those who wrap by hand (which still represents some 60% of Italian demand and is done by both small and large companies alike, including logistics firms)".

There's no arguing with the figures
"The rolls of Heikaus film hold up to 600 metres, well over the standard - says Volpi by way of example - yet these rolls weigh less than two kilos and are therefore far easier to handle. In fact, the rolls contain pre-stretched material that's far lighter for the same length (with 280% pre-stretching, the thickness goes from the initial 23 microns to just 8), with an excellent elastic memory to guarantee the stability of the load". Of course, it's up to the operator to decide which thickness to use for which load. With just a minimum of practice, he also learns to apply the right tensioning force to get best results.
"In addition to the intrinsic advantages of these materials, there's also the fact that they let control the many "hidden costs” of the warehouse" stresses the businessman. A few examples? "If 10 m of material are left on the roll at the end of the cycle, the operator won't use these as 10 m isn't enough for a new pallet. If we do a few sums, we can estimate that 10 m of film are wasted every 200 m, whereas in our case the ratio is 10 : 600 and so far better. Another problem concerns the weight of the roll core, which can be anything up to 20% the total weight. This is a problem as the user pays for the cardboard at the same price as the film, both on purchasing the roll and as the Conai contribution. We, on the other hand, talk about the price per metre (instead of per kilo), and so we quote the customer a net price, or we sell the rolls without a cardboard core (Coreless), thanks to the clever Heikaus patent.
Finally there's another aspect worth considering. We use a single supplier who works to extremely stringent standards and subjects its products to very strict tests; thanks to this, we have materials of an even constant thickness, which is no small thing not to be taken for granted."

A full range
Heikaus has developed a full range of stretch materials for wrapping applications, thickness going from 8 to 12 microns and various types of film and compositions. For instance, there are the macro-perforated films and reinforced films with special extra bands; materials suitable for food (much appreciated also by the pharmaceuticals and chemicals industries thanks to their superior hygiene); the more affordable cast films and the most sophisticated blown films…
"All our products are strictly controlled and we can fully document their technical and performance characteristics. We also sell them in the successful Coreless version, supplied to our customers in personalised boxes thus saving 20% of available freight space and so keeping transport costs down".
There are two other strengths in the Se.Co.Pack offer: careful advice as to the choice of the right film in order to best exploit its qualities and the availability of a line of mobile wrapping machines designed by Gerd Heikaus in person which maximise the advantages of these materials. The machines have been designed with the same criteria of common sense that led to the creation of the films, i.e. considering the real needs and actual applications.
The result is a line of lightweight machines with limited consumption ("they run on 13 Volt batteries") as they're not expected to do any pre-stretching and, last but not least, they're very safe. "Try them and see," says Volpi who, to be even more convincing, always has one at hand for a live demo.

A quality choice
He picked up his knowledge of the Italian packaging industry "ever since I was a boy", gaining experience as area manager for North Italy for a company in this sector; the decision to offer advice as a packaging expert, on the other hand, is thanks to his character and natural talents: Leonardo Volpi is, in fact, a sound, scrupulous person used to solving problems.
A choice that has let him complete his range of professional activities with the sale of materials, machines and lines (Se.Co.Pack has acted as main contractor for the supply of major plant to leading companies). In 1992 Volpi realised his worth and, together with his wife (who shares his ideals and way of doing things), left Milan for the more rural province of Pavia. He set up his business in Retorbido, in a building designed for good quality work, carefully furnished and with a view outside that makes one feel great to be alive.
This is, at times, essential for successful businessmen, especially when, as in this case, they no longer go for quantity, but quality.
"An uncommon choice," points out the owner of Se.Co.Pack, "that requires effort, but is also highly satisfying and which, besides, has encouraged relations with other companies with a similar business philosophy".
The reference to the company's many partners, to whom it proposes solutions certain of being able to guarantee their reliability. And Heikaus GmbH, in particular, the German company for whom Volpi has acted as Italian distributor for 3 years. Heikaus produces a full range of blown and cast films for wrapping palletised loads and a line of specially designed machines to best exploit the properties of these materials. "We met at Interpack in ’99, though I had already tested their films to see if they were coherent with the needs of Italian users. Today we work towards a shared goal: to develop, either directly through distributors or other forms of commercial collaboration, the widespread use of Heikaus products in Italy. And with the shared certainty that we offer a highly attractive product range, both economically and in terms of their performance and environmental impact".
