- sistema di buffer verticale tipo FIFO, con stoccaggio prodotti fino a 4 minuti;
- sistema di alimentazione automatico per barrette di cioccolato da 84 x 29 x 12 mm (600 incarti al minuto). Il sistema è composto da una sequenza logica di nastri trasportatori, che hanno la funzione di mettere in fase i singoli pezzi per la corretta immissione nella catena di alimentazione della confezionatrice;
- confezionatrice Cavanna Zero 5 di tipo elettronico;
- isola robotizzata integrata modello G35 per formatura, riempimento, chiusura con colla a caldo di display box, del tipo con patella sul lato lungo. Le tre operazioni di formatura, riempimento e chiusura, sono svolte da bracci robotizzati indipendenti, ciascuno a 3 assi (la velocità è sino a 50 cicli al minuto);
- un braccio robotizzato per prelievo e formatura simultanea di 4 display box, che vengono inseriti automaticamente in una catenaria comandata da due servomotori;
- il sistema VMC, costituito da un circuito a tazze atte a ricevere i singoli prodotti confezionati, per presentarli correttamente al sistema di prelevamento costituito da un braccio robotizzato;
- un braccio robotizzato a 3 assi per prelievo dei prodotti confezionati dalle tazze del sistema di trasporto VMC e caricamento dall’alto del display box. In simultanea vengono riempiti 4 astucci. Considerando che ogni strato di prodotti è costituito da 6 pezzi, ne consegue che i cicli per minuto del braccio robotizzato sono 25, quindi perfettamente in linea con la potenzialità di questo sistema che prevede una velocità massima di 50 cicli al minuto;

Li ricordiamo in rapida sintesi:
• servomotori SM ad alta dinamica con encoder ad alta risoluzione assoluti mono/multi-giro;
• tempi di sviluppo software ridotti grazie alla presenza di funzioni di libreria orientate al settore del packaging;

A Family Company
«We are a Family Company with a strong entrepreneurial vocation» managing director of the Product Development and Customer Relations Area Riccardo Cavanna starts out by saying, who together with his sister Alessandra (managing director of the Company Management and Marketing Area) runs Cavanna SpA.
The company, that came into being 45 years ago at the behest of Mario Cavanna, has never lost its entrepreneurial verve and, now entrusted to the second generation, has continued to grow, up to achieving the size of a medium scale enterprise.
«We are proudly continuing in the vein of a successfully run family business. A sentiment - Riccardo points out -shared by our 200 employees, skilled and motivated professionals, ready to tackle the global market and who are equally proud of belonging to a concern that is known and appreciated worldwide».
Because Cavanna is a Family Company with an international standing: «Right from the outset we have exported our systems throughout the world - Riccardo explains - and we have won ourselves a key role in the world system of food packaging companies. We interlocute with multinationals but also those with small-to-medium-sized confectionery concerns that also need skilled suppliers capable of immediately understanding their needs and satisfying the same. Our success also depends on our capacity to dialogue with our customers, whose needs we anticipate, creating special solutions to suite the same. In this sense, in exploring new ways and new possibilities, our “natural” propensity to innovation has been a great support».

Class debuts
Cartesio and robotics

MACHINES AND IDEAS - For 45 years protagonist of flowpacking, at Interpack Cavanna SpA is launching a new range of applied robotics products, that bring them into the world of the multipack and cartoning. With the support of ELAU, who supplied the automatisms, software and knowhow.

Not a system but a system “concept”, devised by the Cavanna Robotics Division, whose adoption among other things has already given great results. This is “Cartesio”, a new “brand” with which the Piedmontese concern intends promoting its own idea of using robotics in the packaging world.
A range of complete solutions will be on show at their Interpack stand (Hall 14 n. B30), integrated in a completely automated primary - and subsequently -secondary packaging line of 18 chocolate bars in a display box.

System innovation
Decidedly innovatory in concept, what makes the packaging system proposed by Cavanna unique is the possibility of concentrating the three canonical operations of forming, filling and sealing of the display box, traditionally entrusted to independent machines. in a single solution.
This concentration in a single “work unit” has in fact enabled precious space saving (dimensions are down to 5000 x 2000 x 2000 mm) without taking anything away from the overall functionality of the system.
More specifically, the packaging system is constituted by:
- FIFO type vertical buffer system, with up to 4 minute product storage;
- automatic 84 x 29 x 12 mm chocolate bar feed system (600 wraps a minute). The system is made up of a logical sequence of conveyor belts, that have the function of phasing the single pieces for their correct introduction into the packaging machine feed chain:
- Cavanna Zero 5 electronic packaging machine;
- Model G35 integrated robotised island for forming, filling and hot glue sealing of display boxes (of the type with the pan flap on the long side). The three forming, filling and sealing operations are carried out by independent robotised arms, each with three axes (speed up to 50 cycles a minute);
- a robotised arm for picking up and forming 4 display boxes simultaneously, that are automatically inserted in a chain commanded by two servomotors;
- the VMC system, made up of a circuit of cups for receiving the single packed products, bringing them correctly to the pick-up system made up of a robotised arm;
- a triaxial robotised arm for picking up the packed products from the cups of the VMC transport system and loading them from above into the display boxes. Four boxes are loaded simultaneously. Considering that each layer of product is made up of 6 pieces, it follows that the robotised arm carries out 25 cycles per minute, hence perfectly in line with the system potential that has a max speed of 50 cycles a minute;
- a triaxial robotised arm with interchangeable head, for closing with hot glue 4 cases, at a speed of 33.3 cases a minute.

Functionality and automation
The 16 brushless motors that go to make up the entire robotised island have been produced by ELAU, the same going for the control electronics of the entire system.
The PacDrive automation system made by ELAU adopted by Cavanna offers a valid solution both from a technical and economical point of view. The PacDrive consists of a PC controlled system, the PacController and one or two MC-4 digital servodrives, that contain the feeder block, the final power stage and the servoregulator for the single axes.
The PacController is the “intelligent” component of the system and is based on an industrial PC with CPU of the Pentium family with s.o. VxWOrks. The PacController synchronizes and coordinates machine movements. By way of an integrated SoftPLC (based on CodeSys of 3S Software) programs can be written in the six languages under the IEC 61131-3 standard. The instructions in binary logic can also be written in the standard ladder (LD) language, the sequential logic instruction are writable in block logic (SFC) while the movement instructions can be written in structured text or through functional blocks (ST,FBD).
A single series C400 PacController enables the connecting up of 16 axes through the real time SERCOS digital bus with a cycle time standing at 4 ms.
The SERCOS bus enables safe data exchange with the MC-4 MotorControllers. Thanks to the use of the optical fibre technology, the data bus is not affected by electromagnetical disturbances and supplies the new nominal values to the decentered MC-4 MotorControllers cyclically at a speed of 16Mbaud.
Via the real time bus all the internal states of the axes can be requested and processed by the PacController: thus the position, speed, acceleration, current absorbed or the power tension present on the DC bus can be known immediately for each axes.
As well as the digital and analogical inputs and outputs, the C400 PacController has two serial ports and an Ethernet interface. The incorporated OPC interface enables connection to the PacDrive of the most varied display and HMI systems.
Through interface modules other peripheral units can be connected to the fieldbus.
In this event, the PacController can function both as master and as slave of the fieldbus. The following international fieldbus standards are supported: CANopen, PROFIBUS-DP and DeviceNet. The incorporated interfaces also enable remote diagnosis through modem/phone or internet. Through TCP/IP a PC can communicate with the PacController or directly access the control states.

Robot paletizzatore

Palletizing robot
IRB 660 is the new robot devised by ABB. Its reliable quadriaxial structure, its broad range of action (3.15 m) and a load capacity that can reach 250 kg is the ideal solution for palletising bags, boxes, bottles and a lot more.
The IRB 660 is considerably faster than its predecessor. In addition, its optimized motor power and motion performance ensure significantly shorter cycle times.
All cables for power, signals, buses and air are assembled inside the robot, to keep wear and tear down to a minimum and also ensure efficient working in “difficult” and dusty environments.

Fine linea modulare

Modular end of line
Innopack Packcell, the innovative end of line solution by KHS (Bad Kreuznach, D), is based on the concept of extreme flexibility: each machine in the system is conceived as a functional and interchangeable module. What's even more striking is the fact that no buffers of any kind are needed between the "modules". On show at Interpack is the system set up for the creation of bundles using heat shrink film following by the application of handles and palletising. This system is particularly compact and low cost. Alongside the Innopack Packcell, some other KHS solutions for labeling are also on show, especially the Innoket RFL, that is the smallest of this company's roll-fed labeling machines. Plus the Innoket APL, a new application station for self-adhesive labels (output speed: 60000 containers/h) featuring vertical positioning of the roll, thus allowing for the addition of extra labeling stations and hence boosting the overall output capacity of the line.

Pasta and bakery products end line
Futura (Alseno, PC) proposes several end line solutions for the bakery products packaging sector, adding special manipulators developed by this company to wrap-around case packers and flat die-cut forming machines.
The Futura manipulators have a pick-up head using suckers or mechanical grippers capable of “staging” various presentation styles inside the pack to suit the customer's marketing needs.
Futura's latest developments also include a complete case packing and palletising line for fresh pasta in thermoformed blister packs.
On reaching the filling area, the blister packs are picked up and introduced into the pre-formed pack by the Robo.Pick/Mp controlled axis polar Pick & Place, with pick-up suckers.
Once filled, the box is sent to the sealing module where a mechanical device closes the four flaps on top using hot-melt glue. The coding system is immediately after the closing module, followed by a checkweighter with an ejection device for boxes that haven't been filled properly. The area dedicated to palletising, finally, uses a SCARA robot (mod. Robo.Pick/SC) that picks up the boxes from the belt and places them on the pallet.

Pulsar (Castel Maggior, BO) creates conveying and feed lines, with stackers, deviators, sorters and vertical and horizontal phasers. The systems offered by Pulsar require only limited maintenance with a considerable reduction in machine down time.
Among the many complete lines supplied by the Bolognese concern, we note a system for handling wine bricks, without stopping the production lines in the assembly phase; the system for transporting smallsize packs with orientation and transfer system; lines for blisters with automatic product and waste checking, phasing for inkjet markers; lines for flacon in sterile chambers; connection of filling machines, tappers, ferrule adding machines, cartoning machines; lines for packs and flowpacks with orientation, preparation and dosing; lines for bundles and cartons from packaging systems to palletisation systems.
Over these last years Pulsar has also started up production of line supervision and handling software. REDS system is an example, capable of controlling, gathering data, piloting (both from the production section and also remotely) and running the entire line from one position, this through the integration of the processing and packaging machines with the transportation system.

Fruit and vegetables: focus on pooling

ON HIRE - Chep’s services for the pooling of pallets and containers for Italy’s fruit and vegetables. Customisation, hygiene and shipment controls among the success factors.

‘Pooling’ entails the combination of resources to obtain synergy and economy of scale, with the view to an improvement in the processes and a reduction of costs. In this case, the pooling of pallets and containers consists of their shared use by a greater number of customers who do not keep them as their own property; instead, by turning to a specialized company, they can be hired with all services included. Chep operates in this field. It is the world leader of the sector, with over 265 million units all over the world and more than 7,700 employees in 42 countries. In Italy, Chep has operated since 1999 with a direct branch (its headquarters are in Agrate Brianza, MI) and has established itself particularly in the fruit and vegetable sector where more than 350 producers now use its containers to shift over 32 million units per year.
Here are the reasons why.

How the system works
The Chep system is very simple. The web of service centres consign the required equipment to the customer-producers, with a guarantee for availability and punctuality. The producers, for their part, deliver their own packaged and/or palleted goods to their own customer-distributors, displaced in various countries over the world. At this point Chep comes back into play, and has the task to collect the equipment from those final destinations, and to return them to their respective service centres, where they are inspected, serviced and maintained before they can be made available again to new customers, in ideal hygienic conditions and quality.
This type of organization has advantages right along the entire logistics chain: the conveyor optimizes the loads, the distances and waiting times; the customer eliminates fixed prices and has all the guarantees of quality service (and of the transported goods); the distributor reduces the time needed to load and unload, the investments in packaging and the costs involved in the disposal of used packaging, at the same time increasing process safety. But this isn’t all. The success of this circuit, particularly with regard to fruit and vegetables, also depends upon the type of container Chep avails itself of: reusable plastic containers (RPCs) that protect the contents during the storage, transport and distribution phases, while still keeping the produce fresh.

Personalisation and hygiene
Chep’s pooling service uses standard containers specifically designed to satisfy customer needs, for whichever type of reference.
The multinational logistics company has specially prepared a Centre of Innovation, able to turn the market’s suggestions into studies on the development of materials and field tests.
Another fundamental strength of the business consists in the keen attention to the hygiene of the containers and the flows. Chep, on the one hand, strives daily to keep in line with the European directives; on the other hand it has set up a modern European network of service centres (there are 10) for the automatic cleaning of the containers. Two of these are situated in Italy: in Milan, where approximately 29 million containers are washed annually, and at Pomezia (Rome), which deals with 7.5 million containers.
The chosen process of sanitisation is in accordance with the HACCP procedures (the development of the Technical Standard BRC/IOC is underway to obtain the certification), and assures the total destruction of the pathogenic micro-organisms from the containers.
SGS has also recently attested that four Chep Service Centres in Europe already conform to the BRC IOP Technical Standards for materials used in the packaging of food: but others will soon ensue.

The importance of controls
Chep’s operative effectiveness is based on a combination of efficiency, customer-orientation, quality of the equipment, capillarity of the service centres and, as a good last item, sophisticated control systems (e-pooling solutions, EDI - Electronic Data Interchange - and Porfolio).
The particular combination of all these factors generates those savings that allow their customers to reduce fixed logistical costs of the goods and to focus on their specific activities.
Among the instruments used in the field, those in charge of controlling the deliveries are fundamental to maximise the efficiency of the service. But not only: Chep has designated specific Project Managers to each customer, to guarantee the sure attainment of the objectives of each project, and has prepared all the computer instruments capable of tracing the flows of the containers on the basis of information received by producers and distributors.
