Jenny Katrivesis

The monochrome… The figurative… The METHANTHROPIC
BARRA, painter and sculptor, was born in Turin in 1940 and, thanks to his family’s frequentations, has always been well-acquainted with the masters of painting.

It has been said on his count
[…] His first teachings on representation of the figure were drawn from Guido Tallone, his love of experimentation from Antonio Carena. As well as his first monochromes, the fifties saw him treating the human figure in a traditional manner. Then, during his stay in Paris in ’57, with the ageing Salvatelli – modest Roman painter but much sought after art dealer thanks to his relations with Picasso, Dalì and Utrillo – Barra came into contact with the great painting of the moment, placing it alongside great masters of the Louvre. In ’58 the figurative still dominates compared to other tendencies, but its accents are different and the figures in movement: what he has called "methanthropic" [...]. Mario De Micheli

[...] Asserting that the slogan “the briefer you are the more skilled you are”, quintessentially I prefer saying that BARRA renders neutral spaces less opaque in a modus operandi that marries form-space-color-light [...]. Antonio Carena.
[...] BARRA considers painting as writing and an anthological show of his always has the value of a journey. In reading his works the purist extraction makes the rhythm vibrate that modulates the landscape; the language of the figure, at times majestic and at times flat in its incompleteness, creates sensations. It is not decoration but true painting that recovers the plastic element of the person as well as the intense concatenated rhythm of the volumes, even if filtered by synthetic realism. On the canvas the praxitelic Hermes of the tender full-bodied movement and the striking colors set against the surrounds in yellow monochrome, attract the psyche for its value as a rift from the preconscious. His conceptual works, with their antonymy between figurative and abstract surreal and a rigorous attention to informal experimentation, are contemporary [...].
