Flexible: everything growing
FIGURES - 2005 shows growth for the Italian flexible packaging industry: turnover and volumes sold have increased, but as Giflex underlines, so too have the costs borne by the companies.
The first figures provided by the biggest Italian companies that produce flexible packaging and that are Giflex Assografici associates show a more than appreciable progress in turnover and on quantities sold for 2005 compared to 2004 (that in fact closed without variations on the previous year).
The results, obtained from an analysis carried out on a representative sample of associate companies, but not on the entire Group, bear witness to a slight improvement in the Italian and aboveall European economic picture, this manifest from the second quarter of 2005.
These positive notes can induce our companies to a cautious optimism for the year at hand, despite the worries that derive from some problems that are still open, as well as a constant increase in the various items of cost, first and foremost polyethylene and polypropylene (these two polyolefinic resins on their own account for over 60% of the raw materials used in flexible packaging production). Still on the subject of costs, one should consider the increases regarding inks and adhesives that, after a long period of stability (lasting throughout 2004) registered an average growth of 5% in 2005. To complete the picture, last year also saw sizeable increases in energy and transport costs, all in all adding several percentage points to the final product.
The segment also complains about the evermore numerous standards and rulings that are being issued by the EC to discipline materials in contact with foodstuffs (and flexible packaging is one of the main items), environmental impact and product safety. Nobody wishes to question the praiseworthy intent of the legislator, all the same the operators find themselves compelled to construct evermore complex organizational structures, and to resort to professional figures with special skills: thus further adding to their running costs. |

Flessibile: tutto cresce
I primi dati forniti dalle maggiori società italiane che producono imballaggi flessibili e sono associate a Giflex/Assografici mostrano, nell’anno da poco concluso, un progresso più che apprezzabile del fatturato e delle quantità vendute rispetto al 2004 (che, di fatto, si era chiuso senza variazioni rispetto all’anno precedente).
Il risultato, frutto di un’analisi condotta su un campione rappresentativo di aziende associate ma non sulla totalità del Gruppo, testimonia il lento miglioramento della congiuntura economica nazionale e soprattutto europea, manifestatosi a partire dal secondo trimestre 2005.
Queste note positive possono indurre le nostre aziende a un cauto ottimismo per l’anno in corso, nonostante le preoccupazioni che derivano da alcuni problemi ancora aperti, nonché da un costante incremento delle varie voci di costo, polietilene e polipropilene in primis (queste due resine poliolefiniche, da sole, rappresentano oltre il 60% delle materie prime utilizzate nella produzione di imballaggi flessibili). Sempre in tema di costi, bisogna considerare gli aumenti di inchiostri e adesivi che, dopo un lungo periodo di stabilità (l’intero 2004) hanno messo a segno nel 2005 una crescita media del 5%. A completare il quadro, lo scorso anno, si sono aggiunti significativi incrementi dei costi energetici e dei trasporti che, nell’insieme, incidono per diversi punti percentuali sul prodotto finito.
Il comparto lamenta anche le norme e i regolamenti che, sempre più numerosi, vengono emanati in sede comunitaria per disciplinare i materiali a contatto con gli alimenti (e l’imballaggio flessibile è una delle voci principali), l’impatto con l’ambiente e la sicurezza dei prodotti. L’intento del legislatore, finalizzato a garantire la tutela del consumatore, è certo lodevole, tuttavia costringe gli operatori a dotarsi di una struttura organizzativa molto più articolata, e ad avvalersi di professionalità con competenze particolari: un ulteriore aggravio dei costi di gestione.

Sinergie per la flexo
APERTURE Atif conferma la collaborazione con Converting. Formazione e divulgazione al primo posto dei programmi dell’associazione che promuove la conoscenza della stampa flessografica. Con il prezioso ausilio delle Linee Guida.
Le Linee Guida per la flessografia, messe a punto insieme a Taga Italia per definire il linguaggio, i criteri e le metodologie da condividere all’interno del processo di stampa (e soprattutto ai due estremi cliente-fornitore della filiera), sono ultimate. Atif ora punta a garantirne la diffusione capillare, con i mezzi propri e sui media specializzati, a cui si appoggia senza vincoli di esclusiva, coerente con gli obiettivi di divulgazione che le sono propri. E Converting, che fin dal primo numero pubblicato nel settembre 2002 ospita con continuità notizie e contributi espressi dall’associazione, conferma il proprio appoggio, consapevole che per riuscire non basta fare, ma occorre anche parlare (e riuscire a farsi capire, che a volte è difficile).
Il recente ingresso di Atif in Assografici in qualità di socio aggregato ne testimonia, peraltro, la vivacità e volontà di crescita. Ripartendo da questa nuova collocazione, i promotori della flessografia puntano ad ampliare la base associativa, in modo da poter aggregare sempre maggiori competenze ed energie, accrescendo così il patrimonio di conoscenze e promuovendo nuovi servizi per gli stampatori. D’altronde, l’associazione confindustriale che rappresenta il settore italiano grafico editoriale, della cartotecnica e del converting di imballaggi flessibili, costituisce per Atif un riferimento naturale, in quanto coinvolge stampatori, produttori e importatori di macchine e attrezzature, supporti e inchiostri, attivi in tutti i segmenti del comparto (dal packaging ai quotidiani, dall’etichettatura agli stampati commerciali).
Le Linee Guida - Progettate per offrire dei riferimenti univoci e delle metodologie di lavoro sperimentate a un settore alquanto frammentato anche nelle conoscenze e nella prassi concreta del lavoro quotidiano, quest’opera organizza una materia complessa e in continua evoluzione (tanto che sono previsti degli aggiornamenti periodici).
Le Linee Guida nascono, dunque, da un lavoro di standardizzazione dei processi di prestampa e stampa, svolto a partire dalle specifiche messe a punto dagli organismi internazionali ISO e ANSI, e da qualificati enti di R&S (Fogra, Ugra, FTA, ecc.). Il documento che raccoglie i risultati di questa attività viene proposto come una guida, appunto, in grado di facilitare il lavoro dei preparatori e stampatori impegnati a perfezionare il proprio sistema produttivo. Non un trattato teorico, dunque, ma una serie completa e coerente di regole consigliate, utili a realizzare prodotti stampati il più possibile corrispondenti alle aspettative dei loro committenti in termini di qualità e costanza, in tempi brevi e a prezzi competitivi.
La disamina parte da un’analisi del flusso di lavoro (funzioni, mansione e responsabilità), per passare all’analisi delle lavorazioni di prestampa, ovvero della preparazione e trasferimento di dati digitali e pellicole, e alla verifica delle caratteristiche degli illuminanti per l’esame degli originali, delle prove e della stampa. Seguono i capitoli dedicati alla preparazione delle matrici flessografiche e ai parametri di controllo per le prove e per la stampa. Quello dei controlli di qualità, peraltro, è l’aspetto più diffusamente trattato in tutto il volume, per individuare le operazioni che devono accompagnare il flusso operativo assicurando la conformità del prodotto finito al capitolato d’appalto e alla prova contrattuale.
A tale scopo, fra l’altro, vengono definite le metodologie di misurazione e i limiti di tolleranza accettabili per i diversi tipi di prodotto da realizzare.
Fondamentali gli allegati, che comprendono le scale di controllo, i formati di salvataggio, la definizione delle caratteristiche e dei parametri usati, la caratterizzazione, i materiali usati nella stampa flexo e, buon ultimo, un utile glossario.

Synergies for flexo
OPENINGS - Atif confirms its cooperation with Converting. Training and divulging take first place in the programs of the association that promotes knowledge in the field of flexography. With a precious help from the Guidelines.
The Flexography Guidelines, devised along with Taga Italia in order to define the language, criteria and the methodology to be shared within the print process (and aboveall at the two customer-supplier extremes of the sector) are now complete. Atif is now involved in divulging the same, resorting to their own means and through specialised media, foregoing any exclusive rights, this in line with its objective of making the rulings as widely known as possible.
And Converting, that has continuously published news and views expressed by the association since its first issue was published in September 2002, confirms its support, aware that simply doing things is not enough, you have speak about the same as well and make oneself understood - at times no easy task.
Atif’s recent joining of Assografici as an associate member also bears witness to its liveliness and will to grow. From this new vantage point, the promoters of flexography aim at broadening their membership base, so as to be able to concentrate ever greater strength and skills to increase their wealth of knowledge and promote new services for printers. And indeed Assografici, in its role of representing the Italian graphic and publishing sectors as well as paper & cardboard and flexible packaging converting, is a natural reference for Atif, inasmuch as representing printers, producers and importers of machines and equipment, substrates and inks, active in all segments (from packaging to newspapers, from labeling to commercial printing).
The Guidelines - Designed to offer benchmarks and tried and tested methods of working to a sector that is certainly also fragmented in terms of knowhow and in the everyday practise, this compendium organizes a subject both complex and continuously evolving (to the point where periodical updates are scheduled). The Guidelines hence are born out of a work of standardisation of the preprint and print processes, carried out following the specifications laid down by international organisms like the ISO and ANSI, and qualified R&D bodies (Fogra, Ugra, FTA, ecc.). The document, that draws together the results of this activity, is offered as a guide capable of facilitating the work of the preparers and printers committed to perfecting their own production systems. Hence not a theoretical treatise but a complete and coherent series of rules given in the form of advice, useful for the creation of printed products that correspond as much as possible to the expectations of those that commissioned them in terms of quality and constancy, this in limited time and at competitive prices.
The work starts from an analysis of the workflow (functions, tasks and responsibilities) to then go on to analyse the preprint phase, or that is the preparation and transfer of digital data and film and checking the characteristics of the illuminators used in examining the originals, from proofs to prints. These are followed by the chapters dedicated to the preparation of flexographic matrixes and control parameters for proofs and for print. Quality control is the feature that receives the most attention throughout the volume, this to identify the operations that have to accompany the workflow ensuring the conformity of the finished product to the contractual agreement and registered proofs. To this purpose among other things, the acceptable measuring methods and the tolerance limits for the various types of products to be created are defined. Here the attachments are fundamental, that include control grids, formats for saving, the definition of the characteristics and the parameters used, the characterisation, the materials used in flexo printing, and last but not least a useful glossary.
The digital version of the document is available for members on the site www.atif.it and, in conformity to the continuous issuing of standards and updates that consider technological innovations, Atif commits itself to updating its Guidelines with all the additions and appendixes to suit the case. |
